I don’t think there is a more fitting name for this seven week programme than
One Magnificent City.

Liverpool is a city renowned for staging amazing
free outdoor events which attract hundreds
of thousands of people, and 2015 will be no
exception with lots of things to look forward to.
For the first time, three majestic maritime
Queens will sail onto the River Mersey, in a
salute to their home city. From both sides of
the water this will be a spectacular sight.
There’s a celebration of our cultural gems to
get things started on 15 May. Returning for a
sixth year, LightNight gives people of all ages
the chance to explore the city’s world-class
cultural offer late into the night.
The bank holiday evenings will mean visitors
can see the waterfront in a new light as
state of the art projections will be beamed
onto the iconic Three Graces as part of the
weekend activities.
As the spiritual home of Cunard, we were
delighted when talks began with the company
around making Liverpool a focal point of
their 175th anniversary celebrations. It’s vital
not to underestimate the importance of this
potentially once in a lifetime experience.
In June we welcome the return of the
International Mersey River Festival, in
partnership with Wild Thang, which this year
sees the exciting addition of the very first
Northern Boat Show - it’s a real coup that the
city has been selected to host this inaugural
WELCOME
show and it will bring a different dynamic and
new audience to this already popular festival.
Britannia sailed from Liverpool to Halifax
Nova Scotia and Boston.
Of course, we will make sure there is a
fantastic soundtrack to the River Festival
with Music On The Waterfront - a series of
free, live concerts at our UNESCO World
Heritage site which will bring the Pier Head to
toe-tapping life.
And it’s not all about the big, showstopping events. Through the Mayor’s Fund
a selection of new and exciting projects
have been commissioned to tie in and
enhance the One Magnificent City theme.
From an ar t installation based on the
real-life stories of those who worked on
Cunard vessels right through to a theatre
production and a literary talk there is so
much to learn about our maritime history
and transatlantic links.
And what better way to end the programme
than being the place in the UK to celebrate 4
July. The combination of acclaimed designer
Wayne Hemingway MBE and Culture Liverpool
will guarantee an unforgettable weekend
marking 175 years of cultural exchange between
Liverpool and the USA. Fashion, music, film, cars
and performance will all be showcased and in
keeping with the One Magnificent City theme there will also be a ship!
Queen Mary 2 will return to the city following
her triumphant visit with her sister ships, to
recreate the first ever passenger crossing
which took place 175 years ago when the

Artist Sir Peter Blake has ‘dazzled’ the Mersey
Ferry Snowdrop, transforming it into a unique
moving artwork.
The ferry, painted with a distinctive pattern in
monochrome and colour, can be seen for the
next two years as the vessel continues its
regular service.
Visit the on-board exhibition, where you can
learn more about Sir Peter Blake, the story
of how two Mersey Ferries were involved in
the First World War, and the history of dazzle
camouflage.

Everybody Razzle Dazzle is commissioned by Liverpool

We want to make your journey during the visit of
the Three Queens plain sailing
The Merseyrail network will be extremely busy during the Three Queens event.
To accommodate the large number of passengers expected to travel, changes will be
made to the planned train timetable. The changes will ensure that 6 car trains give
access to the Liverpool & Wirral Waterfronts, as well as the Sefton Coast. Queuing
systems will be put in place at key times to ensure a safe and reliable service continues.
Sunday 24 May
All Merseyrail services will start approximately 1 hour earlier.
Monday 25 May
• From 1pm all Northern line trains will not stop at Liverpool Central station.
All Northern line passengers must use Moorfields station.
• From 1pm James Street station will close. Wirral line passengers can
use Liverpool Central or Lime Street low level station.
• A rail replacement bus will run between Ellesmere Port & Hooton
from start to end of service.
• All trains on the Northern line will run at a 20 minute frequency
from start to end of service.
The Wirral line platform at Moorfields station will remain closed for
refurbishment during the entire Three Queens event.

WELCOME FROM CUNARD
Cunard and Liverpool share such a special,
historic and emotional relationship, with so
many happenings linking the company and city
over the last 175 years. Liverpool will always
remain our ‘spiritual’ home and Cunard ships
will continue to call at this great port in the
years to come, underlining the closeness of
the partnership.
When Britannia left the Coburg Dock just
after 1400 hours on Saturday 4 July 1840 she
not only established the first regular service
across the Atlantic, she changed the face of
ocean travel forever.
As well as arriving in Boston and returning to
Liverpool with the ‘freshest’ news, Britannia
linked the Old World with the New and that
link has remained unbroken as Cunard ships
have crossed and re-crossed the Atlantic, in
peace and war, without fail, in every one of
the 175 years since 1840.
Liverpool was an obvious choice for us as a
focus for our 175th anniversary celebrations
and we have certainly planned spectacles that
will live long in the memory of those who will
witness them and take part - and will make
maritime history.
24 - 26 May will not only see the first overnight
in the city by our flagship Queen Mary 2, the
biggest passenger ship ever to sail up the Mersey,
but the three-day extravaganza will see what is

perhaps the most spectacular gathering of the
Cunard fleet ever when on Monday 25 May,
Queen Mary 2 will be joined by Queen Victoria
and Queen Elizabeth and the three largest
Cunarders ever built will salute Liverpool and
the magnificent Cunard Building which stands
proudly on the Pier Head.
Magnificent City’ programme which spans
seven weeks and offers multiple events
that will allow as many people as possible
to join in the celebrations that will make
2015 so special.
And that first epic departure of Britannia
will be marked on Saturday 4 July 2015 when
Queen Mary 2 returns to the river exactly
175 years later and follows in the wake of
Cunard’s first ship on a voyage which so many
Cunarders have made their own.
That really does say it all!

CUNARD: A POTTED HISTORY
Liverpool is the birthplace of Cunard.
From the very beginning the British and North
American Royal Mail Steam Packet Company,
universally called the Cunard Line, had its
headquarters in Liverpool.
Cunard’s first ship Britannia, departed on her
maiden voyage from Liverpool to Boston via
Halifax Nova Scotia on 4 July 1840.
The company originally opened offices in
1839 at 14 Water Street, and as the business
prospered and expanded it moved - in August
1857 - to premises at 8 Water Street, on the
corner with Rumford Street.
8 Water Street soon became the hub of an
enormous empire, concerned not just with
shipping across the Atlantic to the United
States and Canada, but also with routes to
ports in the Mediterranean and the Middle
East. By 1877 the company had 44 vessels - 19
on the Atlantic run, 12 in the Mediterranean
and Black Sea services, and a further 13 serving
Glasgow, Northern Ireland and Bermuda.
By this time emigration to the US had begun
in earnest, and travel arrangements of amazing
complexity were engineered through Cunard’s
Water Street office.
The first recorded visit by a senior royal to a
Cunard ship took place in Liverpool on 11 July
1913 when His Majesty King George V and Her
Majesty Queen Mary visited the Mauretania.
Since then every reigning monarch has visited
or travelled on Cunard ships, as have a great
many other senior royals.
Following a further half-century of growth Cunard
was ready to construct its own magnificent
landmark headquarters. The Cunard Building was
a construction on a massive scale. Built of 180,000
cubic feet of Portland Stone, with 50,000 cubic
feet of Italian marble, the building’s design was
based on the Farnese Palace in Rome - the family
home of Pope Paul III.

THREE QUEENS
The Cunard Empire was ruled from the fifth
floor, with its Boardroom and the pivotal naval
architects’ department. Over 1,000 Cunard
staff worked in the building.
On the ground floor was the enormous and
magnificent pillared ticket hall and lounge
for First Class passengers. Second and third
class passengers were dealt with in the
first basement - including, for emigrants,
compulsory medical examinations.
Cunard moved into its prestigious new building,
its third and last in Liverpool, in June 1916 and it
remained there for over fifty years.
But by 1967, the focus of Cunard activity had
shifted away from Liverpool and after 128
years in the city, Cunard’s Head Office moved
to New York in 1967 while its operational
base moved to Southampton.
Sylvania’s departure for New York on 30
November 1967 would be the last sailing
from Liverpool direct to New York but the
final sailing from Liverpool would be made
by Franconia on 30 January 1968 to Bermuda
and then New York. Interestingly Cunard
announced that sailings had been ‘suspended’
from Liverpool and not formally stopped.
All that remained of Cunard, housed in
humbler quarters, was the cargo division. To all
intents and purposes, Cunard had left home.
However, the histories of Liverpool and Cunard
are interwoven and the love of the company
felt by the city was never as evident as when, on
Tuesday 24 July 1990, over a million people lined
the banks of the Mersey to welcome the first
Cunard Queen, QE2, to visit the river.

then 2015 will not disappoint as Liverpool’s
International Mersey River Festival returns for
another action packed weekend of fun.
New for this year is the exciting addition of
the Northern Boat Show which will see the
Albert Dock become home to the latest
world-class sailing and powerboats - a pure
delight for any boat enthusiast.
This inaugural Northern Boat Show will see
around 150 exhibitors and 60 boats attending
the show. Clipper Marine have already signed
up to the boat show and will showcase a
series of Bavaria Yachts and motorboats
with other exhibitors including Hamble Point
Yacht Charters, Pantaenius boat insurance,
Marine Teak and WiFi Onboard.

For music lovers, there’s plenty on offer as
Music On The Waterfront forms part of the
celebrations - 2014 saw a fantastic DJ set from
Craig Charles, as well as performances from

Along with street theatre, air displays,
exhibitions, flyboarding demonstrations
and vessels aplenty there promises to be
something for everyone.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Liverpool Marathon and Half
Marathon is returning to Merseyside for its
second year. Starting and finishing along the
waterfront, the race features scenic views of the
stunning docks, rich architecture, spectacular
museums and historic commercial districts.
New for this year are a 5k race taking place
on Saturday 13, 1 Mile Run on Sunday 14
and a two-day Running & Endurance Show
which are sure to make this an unforgettable
festival weekend.
As the name suggests, music will make up the
heart and ‘sole’ of this event, with more than
50 live bands at 22 entertainment stages lining
every mile of the race route to keep runners
excited and motivated.
The fun continues at the Finish Line Festival
and the concert in front of the Echo Arena,
where everyone gets to celebrate the day.

Transatlantic 175 will commemorate 175 years of cruise passenger
travel across the Atlantic during a weekend of cultural events that
span Liverpool’s waterfront and historic docks directed by Wayne
Hemingway MBE. Watch the city come alive with home-grown
music, fashion, art, design, food and film of the 19th, 20th and 21st
century through influences that have travelled across the pond from
the ports of Halifax Nova Scotia, Boston and New York since Samuel
Cunard’s first crossing on 4 July 1840.
Coinciding with the weekend of American Independence, insights
from both cultures will be explored and played out in the museums,
galleries and evocative public spaces that line Liverpool’s World
Heritage Site including Albert Dock, Mann Island and Pier Head all alongside the spectacle of Queen Mary 2 which will be proudly
sitting on the River Mersey.

admire before a stunning and unforgettable
patriotic send-off as part of the Transatlantic
175 celebrations, bidding her farewells once

Celebrating the finale weekend of Liverpool’s
One Magnificent City, the 4 and 5 July play host
to ‘Vintage On The Dock’. A bijou ‘Vintage
Festival’ celebrating the decades of British cool
will take centre stage at the historic Albert Dock,
transforming it into a vintage playground laced
with experiences, sights and sounds that trace
the history of Liverpool’s 175 year relationship
with transatlantic travel.
Experience an authentic celebration of the
music, fashion, art, design, film and food of
the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s
and take a look at how British pop culture
throughout the decades has been influenced
by a special cultural relationship with North

America. Come and hear the stories of the
Cunard Yanks as they re-live their journey’s
on board the Cunard cruises that sailed from
port to port. Sample culinary delights inspired
by American cuisine, whether it be from the
vast restaurants and cafes of the Dock or the
food artisans trading from vintage vehicles.
Join in with pop-up dances from across the
decades, from a 20s Charleston to the moves
transported back to Liverpool by the seamen
who sailed the great ships - let it rock with
Jives, Jitter Bug and Lindy Hop. Explore the
Vintage Marketplace with the best traders from
the North West and beyond selling fashion,
homewares, vintage vinyl and memorabilia from

the 1920s through to the 1980s and absorb the
eye candy as vintage fans flock to the dock. Kids
and adults alike can learn new skills at a series
of hands on creative workshops that express a

The weekend will also see the Albert Dock stage
a magnificent all marque display of the finest
classic cars, modern super cars, competition
cars, classic bikes and scooters showcasing the
best in automotive history. Visitors are promised
a tremendous spectacle that will attract
thousands, recreating a nostalgic throwback to
the halcyon days of British motoring.

Park to hear music from throughout the
decades then sit back, relax and enjoy entertained by the best, light hearted
and immersive street performances that
will wander through the grand, industrial
architecture of Albert Dock. And while you’re

1950s American artist Jackson Pollock at Tate
Liverpool, immerse yourself in the jazz infused

with the Fab Four at the Beatles Story Museum.

Transatlantic 175 steps up a gear as Liverpool
welcomes 175 of the finest veteran, vintage and
classic cars and bikes, taking part in a historic
motor cavalcade through the heart of the city.
From very early pre 1905 production models
to today’s super cars, spectators will be
treated to a stunning display of American and
British classics to admire from 11am.
Lined up along the Pier Head, opposite the
iconic Liver building, the city’s Classic Car
Cavalcade will begin at 2pm. Following a route
around the city, all vehicles will pass famous
cultural landmarks along the way including the
Chinese Arch, Hope Street and St George’s
Hall ending back at the Pier Head where they
will be proudly displayed until 6pm.
This is a truly not to be missed event in motoring
history, bringing together rare automobiles and
historic motorcycles in celebration of a unique
transatlantic relationship.

Bonny Cummins’ exhibition and art trail in six
locations at St George’s Hall Heritage Centre is a
highly immersive multi-media sensory installation,
tackling the beauty as well as the tragedy of the
Lusitania. Using the iconic red and black Cunard
funnels as zoetrope’s and soundscapes, the
artists animated paintings are combined with an
atmospheric soundtrack by multi-instrumentalist
Josh Cummins to tell the whole story of Lusitania.

Britannia, Carpathia and Lusitania are the
names of iconic Cunard ships that still
resonate in Liverpool today. This interesting
walking tour around the waterfront brings
the stories of these and lesser-known
‘Cunarders’ alive with readings from memoirs,
essays, letters and literature of the day.
Guided by Deborah Mulhearn, the tour takes
approximately an hour and a half and is 1.5
miles long. Whilst there is no charge for this
walk, booking is essential as spaces are limited.

Rushton (1756-1814): A sailor from the age of 11. His
naval career was terminated as a teenager when he
was blinded by an infection caught while trying to
help slaves. He was probably the most gifted of the

talk will explore the life and work of a remarkable
product of Liverpool’s romantic-era marine culture.

The Maurie, written by Writing on the Wall’s
Mike Morris, directed by Carl Cockram and
brought to you by the team that produced
‘Waiting for Brando’ (The Liverpool Echo’s
pick of the year for 2013, awarded 10/10), is
based on a 1920s short story by rediscovered
Liverpool seaman and writer George Garrett.
It celebrates the mighty ‘scouse boat’ The
Mauretania, and the lives and conflicts of
those who worked below decks in the
‘Subterranean Theatre’ of the ships’ stokehold.

Cohiba Productions are building on their
local heritage projects, Picture Palaces and
Reel Heroes, to celebrate the role of cinema
projectionists in bringing entertainment and
news to the pleasure seekers on the Cunard
Line. Short film ‘Reel Heroes At Sea’ brings to
the silver screen the memories of retired ‘at sea’
projectionists. The film describes their lives, the
history of the silver screen at sea, preserving
the heritage of this important role, the people,
who connected the audience and silver screen.

Walter Mosley, one of the most versatile and
admired writers in America today, joins Writing
on the Wall for a rare UK appearance.
The author of over forty critically acclaimed works
of fiction and non-fiction, Walter Mosley gained
fame through his Easy Rawlins mysteries, including
‘Devil In A Blue Dress’, which was adapted into an
award-winning film starring Denzel Washington.
He is the winner of numerous awards, including an
O. Henry Award, a Grammy and PEN America’s
Lifetime Achievement. While academics debate
whether he should be considered a Jewish or Black
writer, Walter Mosley, whose bestselling work
tackles issues of race, class and equality without
apology, prefers to simply be called a ‘novelist’.

intimate audience with many famous Sinatra
songs, stories about the Mob, The Godfather,

Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) is widely considered
one of the most influential and provocative
American artists of the twentieth century, whose
work has made an immense contribution to
abstract art. Jackson Pollock: Blind Spots focuses
on the latter part of the artist’s career, shedding
light on a less known but extremely influential
part of his practice. This will be the first exhibition
in more than three decades to survey Pollock’s
late paintings made between 1951 and 1953; a
phase of work referred to as his Black Pourings.

Getting around by Rail
There is a fast and frequent rail service in

There are two main bus stations in the city
centre where the friendly staff can help you

Getting around on the River
Mersey Ferries connect Liverpool with the
Wirral Peninsula, calling at Pier Head, Seacombe
and Woodside. They’re the perfect way to see
another side to the Liverpool waterfront, whilst
learning more about the history and heritage of
the region and river. And you can boast that you
have been on a “Ferry ‘cross the Mersey”.
