2015 Summer Swim & Dive Season
Dear Stingray Parents:
Welcome to the 2015 Johnson County Summer Swim & Dive League! It’s that time of year again, time to break out the
sunscreen, water bottles, and swim suits for another exciting summer with the Roeland Park Stingrays. For those of you
who are new, Welcome, and for those of you who are returning, Welcome Back! I look forward to getting to know you
all. We have some new faces this year, and we are excited about the change.
Our first practice is Tuesday May 26th at 8:30 am for swim. I know that many of you may still be in school. We ask that
swimmers sit on the bleachers, ready to stretch at 8:30am, with water bottles, sun screen, swim caps, goggles, & towel.
Swimmers are to be picked up promptly at 10am after practice. Divers may stay until dive team starts practice at
10:15am. Please pick divers up promptly at 11:30am. We understand that there are emergencies and things come-up
from time to time. One of the coaches will wait with the children until everyone is picked up, but in the event that you will
be arriving more than ten minutes late (10:10 am), please call or text to alert us of the situation.
Our goal for this summer is to have a blast! Our goal to you is…. We hope to provide a positive team experience for
novice swimmers, as well as teach the skills needed to become competitive swimmers in a fun, low-pressure atmosphere. The Johnson County Summer Swim & Dive League program was never intended to rival the local swim teams/
clubs, but rather to assist them by encouraging children to participate in a sport that they might not otherwise have a
chance to enjoy.
The Summer League programs need your help and support! Volunteers will be needed to serve as timers, starts, stroke
judges, clerk of the course. No previous experience is needed for your help. Volunteer involvement is a key factor in
helping us keep down the costs of this high quality program. Other family members and friends are welcome to help!
Hopefully, this handout will answer many of your questions regarding our summer league program.

Attendance will be taken every practice. There will be a “PERFECT ATTENDANCE AWARD” that will
be handed out at the end of the season. Participants have to attend at least 2 practices if they want
to participant in the meets.
Practices will begin Tuesday May 26th
For Swimmers your practice will be Monday—Friday 8:30am to 10am. Please meet at the
bleachers with towel, water bottle filled, swim cap and googles ON. The coaches want the swimmers
ready to hit the water at 9am.

hotline updated, however changes can be made on the spot and last minute so please be patient with us. If your not sure about practice please contact the pool at 913.432.1377. The front
desk will know if practice/meets will be canceled or not.
Roeland Park Aquatic Center has a heated pool, there for we will have swim practice unless
there is lighting. If the air temperature is under 68 degrees dive practice will be canceled. If you
as a parent feel that it is too cold to have your child out in the cool weather please let us know.
The Roeland Park lifeguards will clear the pool deck if there is lightening in the area. Parents,
if you are planning on dropping your child off for practice, have a safety plan ready to go in case
of bad weather.
Breakfast First — Always. Breakfast at home or on the road is the metabolism boost every
swimmer needs. Instant oatmeal made with skim or low fat milk, toast with nut butter, dry cereal,
yogurt and fruit are all light options that rev up the body.
On Race Day — Pack a Variety of Things. A few options of fruit, vegetables, grain and high quality protein sources should cover the variable appetite and tummy tolerance you may experience on
race day. It’s better to have more food options than a large quantity of only two or three foods.
Pack in the Protein. Protein will be an ally in keeping your blood sugar stable, thus keeping hunger, energy and mood in check. Nibble on cheese sticks or slices, nuts, peanut or nut butters, deli
meat slices, yogurt or yogurt drinks, boxes of low fat milk, hummus, hard-boiled eggs or edamame.
Don’t Forget the Carbohydrate. Your muscles rely on carbs for fuel. Pack easily digestible
sources such as 100% juice, fruit leather, applesauce, fresh or dried fruit, or veggie sticks. Don’t
forget the more complex carbohydrate foods too, such as crackers, unsweetened dry cereal, pita
or other breads, pretzels and graham crackers. Stay away from refined sugars such as soda, candy and desserts on race day.
Think Your Drink. Water, 100% fruit juice and sports drinks are appropriate at a swim meet. Plain
and flavored milk are great recovery drink choices after the meet; they provide protein for muscle
repair and carbohydrate to refuel muscles.
Fiber Facts. Fiber could be a problem on race day. Fiber is a food component to which each
swimmer has an individual tolerance. Don’t experiment with high fiber foods on race day; sort this
out during training season and avoid tummy trouble when it matters most.

Please keep in mind that swim teams and swim meets are only successful when we have volunteers.
Meets cannot run without timers, officials, starters, etc. We host three home meets during the summer
and we ask that all our parents contribute their time and energy during these events. We would like
each child to have 2 volunteers. Please be looking for the sign up genius that will be emailed to you.
This year we are asking for each child to have a volunteer for 2 traveling for swim meets. We are also offering a buy out program if you are interested in opting out of volunteering this swim season.

The pre-competitive team is gaged for swimmers 11 or younger on May 31, 2015. Pre-competitive
swimmers must not have scored a point in a competitive meet. Swimmers must be able to swim 25
meters of front crawl and backstroke before trying out for this team.
Coaches will work with swimmers on each of the four racing strokes (freestyle, backstroke,
breaststroke and butterfly). The primary goal of the pre-competitive swim team is to introduce young
swimmers to the sport of competitive swimming and to increase endurance. NO SWIM LESSONS
WILL BE GIVEN however there will be spots available in our Making Waves program after practice.

There will be four Saturday morning meets held at various pools within our league. All swimmers may
participate in all events of each meet in their gender and age groups (7 and under, 9 and under, 11
and under). Multiple heats of each event will run. Each Stingray swimmer will receive a ribbon for
each event he or she participates in. At the discretion of the coaches, swimmers may be moved to the
competitive swim team as his or her skills improve.
Practice Times:
Monday- Friday 8:30am - 10:00am
Our Competitive swim team is for swimmers ages 5 to 18. The competitive swim team provides an
opportunity for youth to compete in a recreational swimming league. Practices and workouts are
designed to increase speed and endurance. Some limited stroke instruction will be given and racing
strategies taught. There are always spots available to include the participant in a private lesson with
the coaches to get more individual attention.
The competitive team practices five mornings a week from 8:30am to 10am. Swimmers will compete in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and relay events in their gender and age groups
(9 and under, 11 and under, 13 and under, 15 and under, 18 and under) as assigned by the coaches
for each meet.
Invitational Meet: Swimmers may compete in any three of the four strokes (freestyle, backstroke,
breaststroke and butterfly) that the swimmer wishes. Times are recorded for individuals and ribbons
are awarded. There are no relays at the Invitational. This meet is a great opportunity to improve times
and gain more experience. The meet is fast and FUN!
Events: By league rules, swimmers are allowed to swim a maximum of three individual events per
meet.
Relay Events: Each city is allowed only one relay team per relay event. Relay teams will be chosen at
the coaches' discretion.
All-City: Individual events: Each city is allowed three entries per individual event. Therefore, the
fastest three swimmers in each event will be selected to represent Roeland Park at the All-City meet.
This will be based on the each swimmer's best times swum with the Stingrays during the current
season. By league rules, swimmers must have competed in at least two meets of the current season
prior to the All-City meet in order to be eligible to swim at the All-City meet. All-City entries will be
posted at the pool during practice Friday morning after our final regular season meet.
Participants should know the basic dive before joining the team. Further instruction will be given by
the coaches. Coaches will observe divers during placements and may recommend that some
seek further instruction with our Making Waves program.

We are having a tee-shirt contest for the 2016 season. Every swimmer will choose
which design they like best. The voting will be held at the end of the year party.

Dual meets:
Each swimmer may swim a maximum of three individual events plus one relay. Coaches decide what events each swimmer is entered in.
The first heat in individual events is the competition heat which counts for points. The 2 nd heat is exhibition.
Additional exhibition heats may be added in order to give more swimmers a chance to participate.
Scoring: Relays 7-0, Individual 5-3-1-0
Tri-meets:
Each swimmer may swim a maximum of three individual events plus one relay. Coaches decide what events each swimmer is entered in.
The first two heats in individual events are the competition heats which count for points (five swimmers per team). Additional exhibition heats may be added in order to give more swimmers a chance to participate.

All-City Championships:
Each team may enter three swimmers (and two alternates) per event. Each swimmer may swim in three individual events

Procedure for all Johnson County Municipal Swim and Dive League meets is followed as outlined in the league’s Competition Regulations. For all issues not addressed in those rules, the current High School Swimming, Diving and Water Polo
