Acting Judges make up a significant component of the High Court bench
in Johannesburg and Pretoria
Acting Judges are frequently drawn from the ranks of the advocates
profession
Being a good advocate does not necessarily make one a good Judge,
although there is an obvious overlap in roles
We need to know how best to serve the Judiciary
The challenges of mixing an acting stint with an advocates’ practice are
considerable and little appreciated by first-timers
Judges make the best teachers of Judges
The Bar is duty bound to support its historically disadvantaged members
in many ways to advance the cause of transformation, and this includes
support to take up judicial appointments
Support for the Judiciary is a duty of the Bar
Ongoing training of its members in practice related skills is a duty of the
Bar
We should equip our members to answer the call, should it come, to take
up acting appointments and even if ‘the call’ does not come, the training
is beneficial to an advocate
The benefit of training expenditure and experiences, particularly those
that permit a convivial interaction with the Judiciary, should be extended
beyond the most junior of our members
The Bar should support the South African Judicial Education Institute
and publicize SAJEI’s activities to our members
High quality training experiences inspire and rejuvenate one’s practice
and outlook on the profession
