HEADTEACHER’S NEWS
Jack Petchey Awards
On Wednesday of last week I attended the
Borough’s Jack Petchey Award Ceremony at
the Broadway Theatre. It was a privilege to
attend an event that celebrated the
achievements of not only our own JRCS
students, but also all students who have been
given Jack Petchey Awards in the Borough’s
secondary schools. There is a feature in this
week’s Barking and Dagenham Post with
pictures of all our award winners.
Gold Seagull Winners
This week I was delighted to give out twenty
six Gold Seagull awards to students in Years
7 -11. It makes me very proud to give out
these awards as it shows that our young
people are really aspiring to be the best that
they can possibly be.
London Marathon 2015
I am delighted to announce
that two members of JRCS
staff took part in and
completed the London
Marathon last Sunday.
Many congratulations to
Miss Wilkinson in PE and
Mrs O’Connor, one of our
lunchtime supervisors, on
their fantastic achievement.
Year 8 Parents’ Evening
On Thursday 14th May, we are holding our
Year 8 Parents’ Evening between 3:40pm
and 6:40pm. Could you please make sure
that you check your son or daughter’s planner
to make sure they have made appointments
with their teachers.

GENERAL NEWS
Year 11 Prom
This year’s Prom will be held on Monday 29th
June, 6:30pm to 11pm at Orsett Hall.
We are really looking forward to Prom this
year. It will be such a good event after a lot of
hard work in the run up to the exams.
Letters have gone home this week with
information about payment. This includes
information about the year book too. Please
contact myself or Mrs Hart if you have any
other queries.
If you are thinking of hiring transport for the
event feel free to do so at the times above.
We have been advised by the local council
that some vehicle hire companies do not
have the proper licensing required by law, so
you should check before booking. If there
were to be an accident any claim to an
insurance company would be invalid. The
Essex Police are also monitoring this closely
at the moment so may spot check any
vehicle. If the correct documents were not
able to be provided, students could be left
stranded with no transport home. We
wouldn’t like anything like this to spoil the
evening, so please check if the vehicle has a
PSV license or a PHV license.

'Tackling Stop and Search'
Why are young people stopped by the
Police? This was one of the questions, along
with many others, that was answered by the
ARC Theatre Company during their visit to
our school last Friday. Funded by Barking &
Dagenham Safer Neighbourhoods Board,
ARC has devised a powerful new youth
engagement programme using live theatre to
raise awareness of the realities of Stop and
Search.
Students from Years 8, 9 and 10 attended
and tackled the issues of why young people
are treated by the police in a certain way they watched and participated in
performances that dealt with real life
situations. According to Police statistics,
those aged between 15 and 24 are more
subject to ‘Stop and Search’ than any others.
34% of this age group will be stopped in the
course of a year, compared with 1.4% from
outside this age group.
It was a very productive theatre workshop for
the 280 students that attended, all of whom
found the event informative: 'I didn't know
what my legal rights were, this really helped
to understand where I stand' - Year 10. 'I
enjoyed how they showed us ways to behave
if we are stopped on the streets and avoid
getting into further trouble' - Year 9
A very successful day with the support of
tutors and everyone else involved. When I
went to speak to ARC during lunchtime, they
commented on how well behaved and
enthusiastic our students were and they look
forward to coming back and working with us
again!

The Imps Motorcycle Display Team
The Imps Motorcycle Display Team is a nonprofit-making organisation for 5-16 year olds,
which aims to educate young people through
a challenging programme of activities with a
world renowned motorcycle display team at
its heart. It was set up in the 1970s by Roy
Pratt MBE, and is supported by the Impstart
Trust (Registered Charity Number: 296499).
They perform worldwide to millions of people
each year, with the Royal Edinburgh Military
Tattoo being their most prestigious
appearance which they are privileged enough
to be invited back to every three years.
Unfortunately, they recently lost their biggest
sponsor, Honda UK, and are currently
fundraising to purchase new bikes.
The Imps have a
Crowdfunder page
set up by an exteam member, and
aim to raise
£16,000 by the
23rd May. They
have already raised a massive £11,290 and
have 24 days left to reach their target. The
Imps have been around for 42 years; please
contribute and be part of the team that will
ensure that they’ll be around for another 42.
students take part in a range of activities
regarding healthy eating and a healthy
lifestyle.
The students started the week by taking part
in an opening ceremony where they had a
warm up dance. They were involved in
designing a campaign about health issues
such as avoiding injury in sport, sports drinks
and their health benefits, smoking/alcohol
and their effects on your health.
Students designed an informative and
creative way in which to get their messages
across. The results saw a variety of flyers,
powerpoints, songs, videos and drama pieces
presented by the students.
Students took part in a variety of health
workshops and learned how to cook healthy
food. They got the opportunity to go to the
capital Brussels for one day where they saw
local landmarks and visited the Atomium
building.
The project has been a great success for
JRCS over the last two years and we are
hoping to have the opportunity to host again
in the future.

Last week saw the finale of the Comenius

two teachers went to Antwerp in Belgium in
the final part of the two year project. The
main theme for this part of the project was

Below is the exam timetable for GCE &
GCSE exams which start on Tuesday 5th
May. These are official exams and
students will be required to attend normal
lessons when they do not have a
scheduled exam. Please make sure
students have a good breakfast and they
have the correct equipment with them for
each exam, including a calculator (if
needed) and a black pen. If they wish to,
they may bring water, but this needs to be
in a clear plastic bottle with the label
removed. Please remind your child that
under no circumstances should mobile
phones be taken into exam rooms. If your
child is unable to attend any of their
exams, please call the attendance line as
usual and we will require a letter from your
doctor.
