Welcoming dinner – Bedouin style Overnight: Tents in the desert Day 2- Wednesday 9/9/15 Camel riding Travel north toward Jerusalem. Tel Arad Arad is located west of the Dead Sea. The archeological site is divided into a lower city and an upper hill which holds the only ever discovered "House of Yahweh" in the land of Israel. This impressive temple is the only Judean temple recovered by archaeologists to date. The incense altars and two "standing stones" may have been dedicated to Yahweh and Asherah. An inscription was found on the site mentioning a "House of Yahweh", which may have referred to the temple at Arad or the temple at Jerusalem. Visit "Hebron "and the Cave of the Patriarchs The Cave of Machpelah in Hebron marks the burial ground purchased by Abraham where all the patriarchs and matriarchs, except Rachel (who died near Bethlehem) are interred. Walls built by Herod the Great 2,000 years ago surround it, while the interior combines medieval architecture, and Arabesque décor and synagogues founded after the reestablishment of the Jewish community here in 1967. In one corner of the hall of Isaac and Rebecca a cupola stands over a small opening into the actual Cave of Machpelah. “The Patriarch's Way” Walk in the footsteps of the Patriarch's on this historical path. Attractions include an ancient Mikvah – a spiritual purification bath - and intact Roman milestones. Overlook to Mount Nebo The mountain whereby Moses overlooked the Promised Land that he was never to enter… Dinner at Eretz Bereishit – Hospitality in the "Tent of Abraham" Overnight: Jerusalem Day 3 –Thursday 9/10/15 Tel Shiloh In ancient times, Tel Shiloh was the capital of Israel and the center of religious worship for the Jewish people. It held that special status for close to 400 years. The Biblical city of Shiloh was the place where the Tabernacle, which preceded the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem, stood for 369 years. Tel Shiloh is also rich with Biblical history. It was place where young women came out to the fields during the grape harvest in late summer to dance. The men from the tribe of Benjamin would come to the dances, hoping to find wives. There is also a famous story of Hannah, the barren wife, who came to the Tabernacle to pray for a child. The answer to her prayer came in the form a son she named Samuel, who eventually became the most important prophet in Judea, anointing Saul and David as kings. Ein Gedi – King David brook The spectacular Ein Gedi Nature Reserve, just west of the Dead Sea shore, is blessed with two continually flowing streams, the David Stream in the north and the Arugot Stream in the south. A short hike through the streams includes a number of waterfalls and swimming areas. In 1st Samuel 24, Saul continues to pursue David into Ein Gedi. Saul thinks he has the upper hand but David is given the opportunity to turn the tables on Saul and deliver himself from Saul’s pursuit, yet David holds back and does not kill Saul. The First Temple was constructed under King Solomon, King David’s son, on the top of Mount Moriah. Today, the City of David is an archeological site that serves as a study center of that period, and offers a glimpse into ancient Jerusalem. This charming hill is located near the Temple Mount and offers its visitors a magnificent view over fortifications and ancient walls, underground water tunnels, a dip in the waters of the Gihon Spring and a walk in Hezekiah's Tunnel. It is the traditional spot where the New Testament narrative of the baptism of Jesus took place. According to tradition, it is also the place where the Israelites crossed over the Jordan River and Elijah the Prophet ascended to heaven. First Day Rosh Hashanah – "New Year" * This is also the day of Rosh Hashanah "New Year" in Hebrew tradition. Hebrew tradition teaches that this is the Day of Judgement for the entire world, as well as coronation day crowning the Lord as Master of the universe. On this day, Jews fill the synagogue in joyous prayer and heartfelt penitence, beseeching a new year filled with health, prosperity, happiness and redemption in the upcoming year. We will be diving deep into the Bible on these two days, researching the significance of this time of year and how we can make changes for the better in our lives, relationships with others and with the Lord. Mount of Beatitudes The Mount of Beatitudes refers to the hill in northern Israel, and is the possible location from the Sermon on the Mount. Near the location of the miracle of feeding the 5,000. Mount Carmel Elijah was a prophet and a wonder-worker in the northern kingdom of Israel during the reign of Ahab (9th century BC), he raised the dead, brought fire down from the sky, and was taken up in a whirlwind (either accompanied by a chariot and horses of flame or riding in it). In the Book of Malachi, Elijah's return is prophesied "before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord," making him a harbinger of the Messiah and the eschaton in various faiths that revere the Hebrew Bible. In Judaism Elijah's name is invoked at the weekly Havdalah ritual that marks the end of Shabbat, and Elijah is invoked in other Jewish customs, among them the Passover seder and the Brit milah (ritual circumcision). He appears in numerous stories and references in the Haggadah and rabbinic literature, Overnight: Jerusalem Day 9- Thursday 9/17/15 Mount of Olives The guide will give a historical overview of the Jerusalem, from Abraham through to King David, the temple, conquests, and modern Israel. Gethsemane Garden Gethsemane is a garden at the foot of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem most famous as the place where, according to the gospels, Jesus and his disciples are said to have prayed the night before Jesus' crucifixion. Church of Saint Peter in Gallicantu The church takes its name from the Latin word "Gallicantu", meaning cock's-crow. This is in commemoration of Peter's triple rejection of Jesus "... before the cock crows twice. Visit the dungeons where it is believed Jesus was kept. The Garden is a beautiful place in which you will discover several things that were all here on the night Jesus died and which match the accounts in the four Gospels. Overnight - Jerusalem Day 10 - Friday 9/18/15 Visit "Yad Vashem" - the Holocaust museum Yad Vashem (meaning: a memorial and a name) is Israel's official memorial site to the six million Jews who were murdered by the Nazis during World War II and the Holocaust. Yad Vashem is a complex of museums, memorial sites and research, documentation and education centers, all of which concentrate on the memory of the Holocaust and its atrocities. Herzl Museum The museum features a fascinating audio-visual of Theodor Herzl’s vision for a state. Herzl was a Jewish Austro-Hungarian journalist and the father of modern political Zionism and, in effect, the modern State of Israel. Visit Machaneh Yehuda Market Often referred to as “The Shuk”, is an outdoor marketplace in Jerusalem. The colors, smells, flavors and bustle of the marketplace is accentuated by vendors who call out their prices to passersby.
