ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY
Kalasalingam University, formerly known as
Arulmigu Kalasalingam College of Engineering
(AKCE) was started in 1984. ―Kalvivallal‖, The late
Thiru.T. Kalasalingam, a veteran freedom fighter is
the Founder Chairman of the College. The Ministry
of Human Resources Development, Government of
India, New Delhi has granted University status
(Under section 3 of UGC Act 1956) wide notification
No. F.9-2/2002/U.3 dated 20th October 2006 to
AKCE. The University is located at the foot hills of
the Western Ghats in a rural setting of Virudhunagar
District.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Civil Engineering was established
in the year 1984. It offers B,Tech course in Civil
Engineering, three M.Tech courses (Environmental
Engg., Construction Engg. & Management and
Transportation Engineering and Management). We
have a commitment to high standard of academic
excellence and aimed to provide the students a sound
foundation on the principles and practices in all the
aspects of Civil Engineering. The faculty members of
the department are actively involved in R&D
activities.
ABOUT THE FDP PROGRAMME
Geotechnical Engineering (GE) plays a key role in all
civil engineering projects built on or in the ground.
GE is vital for the assessment of natural hazards such
as earthquakes, liquefaction, sinkholes, rock falls and
landslides. In the recent years, our country has
developed many infrastructure projects (many are in
progress and many more to come) which include
railways, highways, ports, underground tunnels,
power plants etc. The infrastructure development is a
strong backbone for any country development and the
Geotechnical Engineers are playing a key role in
these kinds of infrastructure projects. Uses of
software have also found wide scope in the analysis
and design of substructure elements. Therefore, the
main scope of this Faculty Development Programme
(FDP) is to enrich the faculty with a comprehensive
knowledge in the field of geotechnical engineering
aspects such as site investigations, soil-structure
interaction, soil nailing, design of reinforced soil
retaining walls and advancements in pavement
evaluation.
AIM OF THE FDP PROGRAMME
This FDP programme is aimed at identifying the
research potential and interdisciplinary techniques by
the Faculty members from premier institutions
like IIT Madras, IISC Bangalore, NIRM
Bangalore, NIT Trichy and GCT Coimbatore and
also by the experts in the construction field and
software solutions. This FDP programme will
provide a good platform for the young faculty to
interact with experts at the university level to enrich
their knowledge in the subject and to familiarize them
with effective teaching-learning practices.
9. Field Investigations in Rock Blasting &
Excavation Engineering Projects
10. Advancements in Pavement Evaluation
11. Barrier Systems for Disposal of Hazardous and
Non-Hazardous Wastes
12. Challenges in Geotechnical Investigation
13. Field visit - Demonstration on SPT and Borehole
Investigation
14. Determination of Safe Bearing Capacity of Soil
based on ―N‖ value obtained in the Field
15. Bore-log Report
16. One day excursion to Manimuthar dam
