Our long awaited science kits have arrived!! When our Kamali’i ohana learned that shipping costs were too high, people such as Chris Marzoeki (NextHome Pacific Properties & Hawaiian Airlines), Chad Hiyakumoto (United Airlines), Andrew Beerer (Aloha Skateboards), Rhonda Lee Hay (Broker In Charge of Business Development Maui), and Chad Newman (Maui Property Services) tried to help to find a way to transport the kits to Maui within the funding available from the grant. Special thanks go to Jeff Nadeau, general manager of Dewitt Move Worldwide, which is headquarters for Royal Hawaiian Movers. He arranged for Tara Gonzales (International Transportation Specialist, www.dewittmove.com, ph 858-560-1621) and Michael Nason (VP Royal Hawaiian Movers, ph 808-873-0777, www.royalhawaiianmovers.com) to transport our science kits that arrived on 4/29/15. Two days ahead of schedule! What a beautiful addition to our Kamali’i campus. Our mural is complete thanks to volunteer artist Jim Freeheart! The students and staff enjoyed watching the blank wall transform into an art piece. Besides providing art lessons in the classrooms, Mr. Freeheart used the mural as a teaching tool to demonstrate art concepts such as proportion, depth, contrast, transparency, and color. He was patient and responded to any student explaining what he was doing and why. Finally, each of the students had an opportunity to add a brushstroke to the mural. We are truly thankful to Mr. Freeheart and glad that he is a part of our Kamali’i ohana (family). Besides suggestions for activities such as cup stacking and recycling, the student council also discuss incidents that may include bullying. We are glad to report that there have no been any incidents of bullying at our school but there have been disagreements because rules are not followed. For example, when playing tag, it is not a good choice to say, “I’m not playing” before being tagged. It is also not a good choice to hold on to someone or to slow that person down so the “it” can catch someone. It is a good idea to review the rules before playing and to play fairly. Sometimes disagreements have occurred because students are not following classroom rules. Students are encouraged to report the problem to their teachers and to use the time allocated for character education lessons to discuss the problems and develop solutions. If students have any suggestions or concerns, see either a student council member or Principal Otani. Principal’s Message – Kim Otani Elementary schools join intermediate and high schools, as well as colleges that need to be accredited. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) is the organization that Kamali’i belongs to. Schools have always been held accountable for gathering and analyzing a variety of data to make decisions that will result in a system of services to meet students’ needs. Student achievement and growth are used to determine progress and the plan-act-do cycle continues. The accreditation process is valuable from a self-improvement perspective and as with the common core state standards, ensures that all schools are meeting the same standards while allowing for individualization as to the methods and programs, which are used to support student success. THANK YOU to the parents, students, staff, and community members who spend many hours providing input and working on our school’s selfstudy. There was much to “hoot” (good) about and areas that we acknowledge need further work. THANK YOU to our five member WASC team comprised of chairperson, Dr. Robert M. Slaby (Assistant Professor, NV), co-chairperson, Dr. Milt Werner (retired Superintendent, CA), Ms. Michelle Barber (Principal, Ha’aheo Elementary, HI), Mrs. Erika Cruz (Asst. Superintendent, Guam DOE), and Mr. Michael Nakasato (Principal, Pearl City Highlands Elementary, HI). The team spent many hours prior to their visit reviewing our self-study. Their three days on our campus began early each morning and they labored into the night to gather and review evidence gleaned from interviews, observations, review of data, and documents. The oral reports have been positive and we are hopeful that we will “pass”. In the meanwhile, we continue with our Commitment to Excellence. If you are unable to attend, your concerns and input can be conveyed to SSC chairperson, Eric Cuomo by May 12, 2015 to be placed on the May agenda. The data below shows that the students who use the Achieve 3000 program have shown academic growth. P.T.A. Parent Teacher Assn President Halleh Dunnicliffe Makahiki Day is a BIG fundraiser for the PTA. It will be held on Friday, May 15. The students enjoy participating in Hawaiian themed games and look forward to this annual event. Even if your child is not going to be present, please assist by collecting or making a donation. The PTA sponsors many activities to enhance your child/ren’s education experience and this fundraiser is the major source. Volunteers will also be needed for the annual Hoolaulea (May Day) on Fri, May 22. Monthly donations to help support the school gardens are also being sought. Grow Some Good is our community partner. Community fundraising events are held but the schools that participate should have a matching donation each month. The gardens enrich the students’ science and health curriculum as well as beautify the campus. Please consider making a donation. Box Tops for Education coupons can be clipped at home and send to school; if you can help contact Emily Castera at 875-6840 ext 247. Important Dates: Data regarding student usage is not as positive. If we would like to continue to provide this resource to supplement our instruction, between $12,000-$17,000 of school funds is required. Staff and the SCC review issues such as this to develop and monitor our academic and financial plans. School safety is always a concern. At times, hiring additional staff is necessary; however, this can take away from monies which could be used for activities, equipment, and training to impact instruction provided to students. Parents are asked to please HELP us to keep both you and your children safe and follow the established procedures. Please model the type of behavior that you would want your child/ren to exhibit. Plan to arrive early to avoid traffic congestion. School staff has been trying to monitor the safety procedures. Please work collaboratively (together). Thank you to parents who help prepare backpacks and other supplies the night before. In the morning, children seated on the right side of the vehicle should wait until the vehicle reaches the section with yellow posts in front of A building and the vehicle comes to a complete stop. The posts are there to protect the children. Children should exit independently on the right side along the curb. After your child leaves the vehicle, please use your blinker and watch for other vehicles and pedestrians. School ends at 2:45 p.m. Arriving too early contributes to the traffic congestion. Students are not released from class until 2:45 p.m. and we are enforcing the pickup zone in front of A building. Staff and parents are reminded to treat one another with respect. The police are asked to speak with violators to explain unsafe practices. Let’s work together for the sake of our children (Kodomo no tame ni).
