NEWSLETTER—JUNE 2015 Our BABY has arrived... It was Thursday 4th June at 3.08pm that my already good life took a turn to a deeper and more meaningful journey. It was on this day that Koula and I welcomed our baby boy into this world - Lucas Jose Ruggeri. I dedicate this newsletter to my son Lucas. I cannot wait until the day when he is able to read this and take in what I experienced when my angel entered this world. What we thought was going to be a quick labour turned out to be ten long hours and then ended with a C section. I take my hat off to my wife. I knew loads was involved during the labour and contraction stage, however no one warned me about the punches, really tight body grabs, swearing, yelling and side kicks that came with it. I was really calm all day supporting Koula and keeping the family tribe (my parents, in laws, sister in laws, brother in laws and brother) who were sitting by in the waiting room updated on her progress until... 2.30pm when our obstetrician said we may need to perform a C section. Having to tell my family that everything was OK however as a precautionary measure a C section may be needed was challenging. I was trying to be strong and deep down I knew all was going to be fine, however walking into the operating theatre and seeing 12 heads all in medical gear, talking medical talk became a little overwhelming. It took no more than 10 minutes to get Lucas out, yet it took 40 minutes for them to stitch Koula back up. I knew Koula and the baby were in safe hands. I was comforting Koula and trying to keep a brave face. I kept praying that everything was going to be fine and visualising a healthy baby and mum. Some of you may find this a little ‘fairy’ yet this is my belief and it truly works and provides me with the comfort and support I need during testing times. Seeing Lucas for the first time and even now when I look over and watch him in his bassinet as I write this newsletter, I cannot believe this human being is ours. We created him and he is solely dependent on us. read and advice you receive, nothing prepares you for when reality hits. My advice is to be open to receiving and listening to advice and take bits and pieces that will work for you and your family. I have quickly realised that raising a child isn’t as simple as a “cookie cutter”. Communication and Team Work with your partner is crucial. NEVER EVER underestimate all the work your partner will do in raising your child. Lend a helping hand, never blame one another as you're both on a deep learning experience and don’t get frustrated with each other especially on days when you both may be sleep deprived (which will be often). Life so far (and it’s only been less than a week) since having Lucas has been a roller coaster of emotions, sleepless nights and priorities definitely needing to shift, yet I wouldn’t have it any other way. The love and support we’ve received from our families, friends and the Kaya team has been so touching and we’re so grateful. I’m so looking forward and ready for this next journey in my life. My former boss and dear friend once said to me “we all head to the same destination in the end but it’s the path we take along the way that creates our journey in life’... Kaya at EMPORIUM MELBOURNE opens this AUGUST! We’re busy at the moment building our 2nd club at EMPORIUM MELBOURNE which is set to open this August. This club will provide the CBD folk with a dedicated Yoga space, 2 Pilates Reformer studios, a Mind & Body studio and Group Exercise studio. We’ll also provide members with cardio and weight zones, alternative therapies, physiotherapy and personal training services. Our Pre-Opening Display Suite opens on June 29th onsite at The Emporium. Any existing Prahran members wishing to make use of both clubs will have the opportunity to upgrade to a dual club access membership. We will communicate to all members of our upgrading process in the coming months. I always knew Koula had maternal instincts well before we even fell pregnant. Seeing her now with Lucas just reinforces shes a natural and was born to be a mother. If you happen to know anyone who may benefit from having Kaya in the city, now is the time to let them know that we’re COMING SOON. Get them to visit us at our Display Suite as we will have Foundation Memberships on offer providing HUGE savings. PLUS you’ll receive 2 weeks FREE for anyone you recommend. Just be sure to let us know who you recommend before they join Kaya EMPORIUM, so we can reward YOU. Koula just said as I write “I love that I’m a Mum”. The contentment on her face as she feeds our baby boy is so precious. The club will be located on Level 5 and members will be able to gain access via Lonsdale St and Lt. Bourke St. I spent the entire time in hospital with Koula and Lucas and I wouldn’t have done it any other way. For any fathers to be, I highly recommend you be there during this special time to support your partner as this is the time they need you the most. Its a life changing journey for both, however we must take into consideration that their hormones are running high, fear, sleep deprivation and physical body changes (just to name a few) are taking place. No matter how many books you I thought I’d include in this issue a few illustrations of the textures and finishes of Kaya Emporium. I hope you like what you see... Until next time, be safe and I hope to see you around the club. Christian OPENING SOON See You on the Mat Our Pilates Instructors love combining Pilates Mat with Pilates Reformer into their routine. We asked them why Pilates Mat should be incorporated with Pilates Reformer? Rose Jost feels that people think Mat is too easy, she found those who took the plunge, soon found neither to be true. In Mat class, there is zero support from equipment and it relies on just the body to maintain technique and alignment. Many Reformer exercises are replicated in Pilates Mat with the use of different props. “It’s so much fun you don’t even realise you’re working hard. Challenge yourself to try Mat and you won’t be disappointed” Tanya Lee says it is quite simple “Thumbs up if you know how hard Pilates mat is… thumbs down if you haven’t tried it yet…” Jodie Sheehy believes that Mat can be more challenging than Reformer, where Reformer essentially improves functional movement, Mat works against gravity and is more functional. The execution of Pilates exercises can be intensified and modified easier on the Mat than on a Reformer. “A great way to challenge what you’ve learned in Reformer class is to try Pilates Mat. It’s fun, challenging, and functional. And there’s a whole lot of new exercises to learn!” Gaynor Carter knows that we all want to ‘feel the burn’ in Pilates, but she questions if we actually feel the work in the correct places and with the correct muscles, too often our dominant muscles take the load. In Reformer we become reliant on the bed moving and our focus is taken away from alignment. In Mat, you are in control of everything… how you move, what you move and when you move, there is no bed to think about. Gaynor recommends incorporating at least one Mat class into your weekly routine, the concentration required in Mat will invigorate the mind and develop the awareness and strength needed to maintain correct posture in class and also outside the club. Jose Garcia feels that Pilates Mat and Pilates Reformer are completely different workouts, they are based on the same principles but use different muscles, areas of the body, props and movements. “Are you going to miss out on this opportunity? Now Way Jose!” Michelle Fernandez believes that “Pilates Mat is more true to life”, you are relying on your own body weight, your own muscles and co-ordination as you work against gravity. Jayde Dimmock is no stranger to Pilates Mat, she loves Mat as it allows you to use various props- foam rollers, therabands, pilates circles and the range of exercises is endless!! “The Burn feeling is definitely felt during a Mat class as you rely on your own body, making it more challenging”, You will learn different techniques and movements which you can practice in your own time out of class. Our friends at Heal’r and Tanya Lee- Kaya’s Resident Naturopath share the benefits of Tumeric during Winter. Often weight gain and fluid retention are mistaken for body fat, but the culprit can be inflammation. This can be a result from long periods of stress due to incorrect sleeping, nutrition or incorrect exercise. As the body builds up stress responses, it tries to heal itself with an inflammatory response- weight gain, bloating or fatigue. Turmeric and ginger are known for their ability to reduce effects of inflammation.
