Kearns Water Polo Club JO’s and Zone Championships Trip Info JO’s (National Junior Olympics) is the biggest and best water polo tournament in the world for age group players. Our club tries to send as many teams as possible. It is always in California, this year it’s in Orange County. The boy’s portion is July 25-28 and the girl’s is July 30-August 2. Teams play 7-10 games over the four days. There are 18U, 16U, 14U, 12U, and 10U age groups. Age group is determined by their age on August 1. The team cost is $250 which covers the team entry fee ($950!), coach’s travel, and some team gear. You would need to get there on your own, although I can help coordinate car pools if necessary. You’re welcome to stay wherever you’d like but I will arrange a team hotel and can put players in team rooms if they’re not staying with their family (four nights divided by how many in the room – usually about $200). I don’t recommend going unless you’ve been playing a year or so, depending on the age group, so talk to me if you’re not sure. You can see more information about the tournament at usawaterpolo.org. Two years ago it was in Orange County also and several families made a Disneyland vacation out of it. ZONE CHAMPIONSHIPS – The Mountain Zone consists of Utah, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Arizona. Each year there is a Zone Championships. This year it is in Denver June 19-21. I would like to try to put teams together for the Zone Championships. It’s been decided that the tournament will not also serve as the “JO Qualifier”. Each of the eleven zones in the country is allotted a certain number of spots at JO’s. At this point our zone doesn’t have more teams interested in going to JO’s than possible spots so it’s not necessary to have a qualifier. The Zone Championships tournament will cost about $125 to the team to cover the entry fee, coach travel, etc. Travel, hotel, food, etc. would be on your own, although we would have a team hotel for those interested.
