6 Before the 1st day of Camp
A successful counselor is a prepared counselor.
A good solid plan before camp begins is essential!
•  Action Steps prior to the first day of camp:
–  Post signs warning campers of what areas are off limits.
–  Are there items in the classroom that should be protected against damage? Examples: chalkboard, computers,
bulletin boards, teacher’s desk, bookshelves, cabinets, etc.
•  Determine where the campers will sit.
–  If desks are in the classroom, make sure the campers do not sit on the tops of the desks. Do not allow the
campers to draw on desks.
•  Determine where the campers will keep their belongings.
–  Locate a corner or wall in the room that is “out of the way”.
–  Campers should keep their belongings neat and organized.
–  Remember this always! An organized space helps maintain structure and chaos in your day.

7 Before the 1st day of Camp
•  Decide what the kids do when they arrive in the classroom.
–  A planned activity means less chaos. Stress no running in classroom and always use your inside voice.
•  Determine procedures for campers leaving the room to go to the restroom.
–  Campers should always be supervised going to and from the restroom no matter where they are on campus.
–  Try to take campers in groups to limit the number of individual trips.
–  Stand in doorway of restroom and check on kids that have been inside too long.
•  Select the counselor responsible for making trips to the office to turn in information or
pickup equipment.
–  The more experienced counselor should ALWAYS remain with the group!
–  Camp Director will make position decisions.
•  Kidcam Camps tagline is “All Summer, All Fun!”

•  Determine what your signal will be to get the attention of the entire group. It is very important
that you have a consistent signal. Examples:
–  Clap sequence until everyone is paying attention
–  Hand in the air signal – if you can hear me raise your hand.
•  Use the whistle sparingly. If over used it can lose its effect quickly!
•  Determine your procedures for lining kids up.
–  Line up if you have ………………….a certain letter in your name, a birthday in May, etc.
•  Walking from location to location have orderly line with one counselor in front and one in back.
•  Obtain a copy of the Parent/Camper Handbook from the camp office. Read and review prior to

10 The First Day Of Camp
WHAT DOES A MONDAY LOOK LIKE?
•  Know your role and assignments for the morning
•  A new parent will likely walk a child in on their first day.
–
–
–
–
They are in a rush. They most likely have to get to work.
The want their gear and any questions answered.
They want to ensure their child is safe and in good hands.
Make it easy for them!
•  Have a table at the main entrance on Monday mornings where Asst Director sits!
–
–
–
–
A One-Stop Shop for parents
This has important forms, Gear, schedules and a computer for payments.
Welcome parents and make them comfortable.
They should leave feeling confident they made the right choice in Kidcam!
•  Have a team member take the child to meet his counselor!
–  Introduce yourself at their level
–  Find them a friend! If a child is introduced to a camper you know is outgoing, their fear of being in a new place is
eased immediately because they have a friend!
–  Show them where to put their things.

Have a role and assignment every morning
•  Carpool Greeter
–  Open Doors. Check a child in on your master role sheet.

–
What’s your duty? Where are kids playing?
8:30-9:00am has the ability to be chaos. Manage it well.
Counselors should not be in a group talking. Campers should not be in a place unsupervised.
Have a counselor anywhere there is a place a camper can play in the morning.
What does your “before camp” morning look like? What are your campers doing?
