Survey of Environmental Protection Areas in the City of Kingston

Survey of Environmental Protection Areas
The City of Kingston’s Official Plan designates a network of EPAs. – They are shown on a series
of maps that are Schedule 3 of the plan, which can be found on the City’s website
at https://www.cityofkingston.ca/business/planning-and-development/official-plan
Although the Official Plan states that, “Environmental Protection Areas must be maintained in
their natural, undisturbed state”, there seems to be no process for checking that this is
happening, and/or of ensuring that the quality of the environment within the EPAs is not being
degraded by litter, etc.
This summer the KFN is planning to organize an “audit” of the EPAs on public land, and will be
encouraging the City to clean up problems that are found.
The audit will begin informally: we would just like KFN members to visit EPAs in their
neighbourhood, and report on conditions they find. – We reckon KFN members will have similar
interpretations of good, poor, and terrible, and we do not need to give definitions.
A series of maps with a grid that can be used to help indicate where you have surveyed,
are posted below.
We would like to start the audit on Earth Day, April 22 nd , and continue it to the end of May.
Anecdotal reports of conditions should be sent to Chris Hargreaves
at hargreavescp@sympatico.ca – A photograph of anything you find that you consider
“terrible” would also be useful.
