Newsletter 22 May 2015 House Logos New, exciting, logos have just been finalised for our four houses: Berkeley Durand Logan Wellicome Go4SET Success! This year’s Education Development Trust Go4SET design projects drew to a close on 15 May as eleven Year 8 students, in two teams, presented their design for an eco-friendly sports centre or classroom to a panel of judges at EDF in Barnwood. Go4SET links teams of students with local engineering companies to offer ten week science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) projects. These projects aim to highlight the exciting future career opportunities in the STEM subjects. This is what one of the teams had to say: Two teams of Year 8 students participated in an engineering competition to design an eco-friendly classroom or sports hall. They spent 10 weeks designing a model, writing a report and preparing a presentation. Both teams did exceptionally well, with the girls’ team; Emily Crowley, Anna McLaughlin, Amelia Reeves, Olivia Green and Laura Dickson, winning the Most Innovative prize, for designing a classroom which would ‘bring the countryside to the city’. The boys team; Leo Wells, Hayden Brewer, Oliver Wilson, Will Culliford, Ryan Daly and Will Harper did a fantastic job of representing KLB, winning a lot of praise for their polite behaviour around the venue. Both teams thoroughly enjoyed the experience and wish to recommend the challenge to future Year 8 and 9 students. All students involved can be proud of their achievement in completing such a demanding project. Congratulations to them all and thanks to Helen Rich of STEMnet and Phillip Ashford, Head of Careers, for their support. 1 Careers Department Careers Convention – Thursday 24 September 2015 Students from Years 9 to 13 and their parents/carers may wish to note the date of the next KLB Careers Convention which will take place at school during the evening of 24 September. As in previous years, we will aim to have a large number of further and/or higher education providers as well as local employers representing as many training opportunities and employment sectors as possible. Work Experience In recent months Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School has helped to pilot The Skills for Stroud Work Experience Charter. This is a quality standard awarded to businesses and education establishments in recognition of their commitment to, investment in, and delivery of work readiness programmes for young people. The aim is to highlight the reciprocal benefits of work placements and to enable young people to identify and develop skills that will ensure they are work-ready. Stroud District Council has supported our students over a number of years in a wide variety of departments including Animal Welfare, Community Safety Services, Customer Services, Environmental Health, Electoral Services, Museum in the Park, Dursley Pool, and Planning. Early on, the Council identified the value of work placements not only to the young person undertaking the experience but also to the employer providing the placement. It also recognised the benefit of matching students with a role that would best suit their interests and of providing a structured and good quality experience. As part of the pilot, representatives of the council interviewed students who had undertaken work experience in July 2014, when they were in Year 10. The students were asked about the process of finding a placement, any difficulties they had, how well the placement had matched their expectations and what they felt they had gained from the experience. The students gave an honest evaluation, pointing out difficulties as well as positive points. KLB has now been awarded full recognition status for its excellent work experience programme under the Skills for Stroud Work Experience Charter. The school aims to develop its work experience programme year on year and welcomes comment and feedback, including suggestions for improvement. We would also like to thank parents and local businesses and other organisations for the good will and support on which the continued success of the programme depends. Attendance – Persistent Absentees The Government has issued new guidelines on attendance. Up until now we have had to report particularly on those students whose attendance is 85% or less – these are known as Persistent Absentees and include students with authorised and unauthorised absence. From September 2015, this percentage is changing and we will now need to report on those students whose absence is 90% or less. This new guidance means that the expectations for students’ attendance has risen. This means that across the academic year, a student will be classified as a persistent absentee with 38 or more sessions (half-days) of absence rather than the current 56 sessions. 2 Music Department Summer Prom Concert – Wednesday 24 June The Music Department’s Summer concert will be on Wednesday 24 June, and will feature students from all year groups. The first half will start with the Samba Band hopefully to include some Year 5 and Year 6 pupils that will have been involved in Samba workshops with us, and the Junior and Senior choirs will then join for a semi-staged performance of Captain Noah and His Floating Zoo, a hilarious 30-minute mini musical with plenty of solo roles and memorable tunes In the second half, the instrumental forces will join together in a Last Night of the Proms spectacular. All the traditional favourites will be there – the Hornpipe, Land of Hope and Glory, Rule Britannia, Jerusalem and much more. And, of course, there will be plenty of flags, balloons and party-poppers! The concert will start at 7.00pm, and will take place in the school’s Drama Hall. Tickets for the evening will be available on the door, priced £3.00 for adults and £1.50 for children. Refreshments will also be available in the usual manner. Year 8 boys football district champions and county runners up The Year 8 boys football team completed a fantastic season, stringing together an impressive eight game unbeaten run to reach the county cup final. The journey to the county final started in January, competing in league games against schools in the Stroud and Cotswold district. After topping the group, the team continued their good form into the semi-final, beating Thomas Keble 2-0 to reach the district final. The final, held at Fairford Town Football Club, was a tough contest against a well drilled Cirencester Kingshill team. Despite going a goal down, man of the match Ewan Hadfield scored a remarkable hat trick that sealed a 3-1 win, and crowned KLB district champions. As a result, KLB represented the Stroud district in the county cup. The team travelled to Dene Magna in the quarter finals, comfortably winning 6-2. The semi-final was played against Cheltenham and Gloucester winners Chipping Campden. Having trailed twice during the game, KLB demonstrated immense spirit and positivity to fight back to clinch an impressive 4-2 victory. This not only crowned KLB as North Gloucestershire Champions, but qualified the team to play in the county cup final. In the county final, KLB faced Mangotsfield at the Fry’s Club in Keynsham. It was a game played with tremendous spirit, but unfortunately KLB lost out to a better team on the day. Despite the loss, the team should be immensely proud of their achievements this season. Congratulations to our county runners up: Rhydian Thomas, Ed Hawkins, Harry Powell, Will Simmons, Tom Cranwell, Jake Harvey, Hayden Brewer (c), Ewan Hadfield, Korbin Walker, Jack Thompson, Kieran Davis, Denton Phillips, Harvey Butler and Elliot Ashbee. Year 8 Football District champions, North Gloucestershire Champions and County runners up 2015 3 Athletics – English Schools’ Athletic Association Track & Field Cup 2015 On Monday 11 May, the PE department took 52 athletes to The Prince of Wales Athletics stadium in Cheltenham to compete in the English Schools Athletics track and field cup. The students were in combined age groups; Year 7/8 girls, Year 7/8 boys, Year 9/10 girls and Year 9/10 boys. The conditions were very good with sunshine for the entire afternoon. There were many fantastic results with several athletes in each age group scoring highly in both their events. Lowri Thomas and Laura Travis provided the team with some great batting, whilst Octavie Kirk and Emma Leyfield were prominent during the fielding. Lowri Thomas was awarded player of the match. Tarragon Newcombe was awarded player of the match. The Year 9B team had a really enjoyable match, but eventually lost 19-16. For the third year running we were able to enter a team of twelve archers into the District School Games competition at Archway School in mid-May. To qualify for this competition all the archers had to be deemed competent and reach a proficient standard in archery. Our 2015 team is featured below:We faced stiff competition at the event; many of the archers from the other schools were regular club members and had experience of archery competitions. Throughout the event our archers were a credit to our school, showing a tremendous team spirit and determination. Although we did not win on the day, all our students enjoyed the experience and are now looking forward to future archery contests. The event organisers were amazed at the high scores achieved throughout this District competition and commented how well all the teams had done. At KLB School we will look to run some more archery sessions in the sports hall, after the summer examinations. If any students would like to try archery for the first time they are more than welcome to attend. No previous experience is necessary and the first taster session is free. Thereafter the sessions have a nominal fee of two pounds. 5 KLB School Summer Festival Saturday 27 June 2015 The summer festival is our number 1 fundraising event. Whatever the weather it will be a fun day for all the family with activities, sports, craft stalls, refreshments and the Battle of the Bands. As ever, we need helpers to make it a success. Can you spare us some time on the day to help with a variety of roles, from setting up tents to selling cans of pop? Any offers of help from as little as 1 hour up to the full day would be very welcome. Parents and Carers, many of you put your names on our helpers list, but now really is the time to get involved. Helping at the Festival is lots of fun and a great way to contribute to the school and community. Older children are welcome to help too. Students can contribute to our “mega-tombola”. This will work as a house point competition and the house donating the most tombola prizes will get a reward from KLB Friends across the year groups. Further details will follow but if you could start to put aside items such as unwanted gifts and non-perishable foods we would really appreciate it. Our feature raffle this year includes hot prizes from MOTs to memberships and vouchers for Tortworth Court, Bristol Zoo and The Bodkin … among others. Your business can benefit from free advertising in the programme in return for donating a prize for our grand raffle. Would you like the opportunity to run a stall selling your products? Running a stall costs just £10 for a 3m X 3m pitch, or £15 for a double pitch, and you will keep all the profit you make on the day. Please contact us in advance via email for full details and to reserve your pitch. Finally, please like and share ‘KLB summer festival’ on Facebook for regular updates and to help publicise this event. Contact us via: klbfriends@klbschool.org.uk Our next meeting is 3rd June at 7:00 p.m. in Dinneywicks, Kingswood. 80/20 Club winners: The 80/20 Club winners were: March: 1st: name withheld by request, 2nd: name withheld by request, 3rd Dave Davies April: 1st: Brenda Murray, 2nd: Anne-Marie Weston, 3rd: A J Gamble May: 1st: Sian Edwards, 2nd: Peter Stuart, 3rd: Keith & Jo Geary See our section of the school website for how to join the 80/20 club. Fundraising We are delighted to have raised nearly £1000 with our recent fundraising efforts at the Music Concert and Quiz Night. We were encouraged by the positive feedback we received about the quiz and would love to organise another social fundraiser like this in the future. Uncertain future for KLB Friends Sadly, our future fundraising is under threat: we still need a new Chairperson from October 2015 otherwise we will close, leaving the school without its PTA. Current members of KLB Friends Committee have been in post for several years already and as children progress through the school we need fresh faces to help us keep going. If you or anyone you know is able to take on this role please get in touch. It’s an impressive addition to a c.v. and a great way to meet like-minded people. Best wishes for half term from KLB Friends! 6 Vacancy at Alexander Hosea School, Wickwar SCHOOL BUSINESS MANAGER – H7 point 31 – 34 (£15,675 - £17,083) 25 HOURS A WEEK TERM TIME ONLY Alexander Hosea Primary School in Wickwar is seeking to appoint a School Business Manager.
