Sober since August 1, 2008, he has refocused his life to put his sobriety and family above all else. He shares his harrowing story of abuse and recovery in his memoir, Basketball Junkie, as well as in numerous interviews throughout the ESPN documentary Unguarded, of which he is the subject. In June of 2009, he launched Hoop Dreams with Chris Herren, a basketball player development company that offers basketball training, camps, and clinics to top basketball prospects in New England. Off the court, Chris Herren continues to share his story with audiences in the hopes of reaching just one person and making a difference in his or her life. In inspiring presentations, he draws on his own history to convince audiences that it is never too late to follow your dreams and urges audience members to overcome their setbacks and start making the right choices. To support this vision, he founded The Herren Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing assistance to families affected by addiction. Powers, MD, DABFP, DASAM, Chief Medical Officer, San Cristobal, Spirit Lodge & Right Step There is something fundamentally lacking in how we look at mental health. You can’t remove depression without teaching joy and remove anxiety without instilling hope. Recovery means much more than abstinence: recovery is a complete shift in the whole person, including relationships, emotions, physical health and spirituality. The DSM-IV should be turned upside down. As the “go to” guide on all things mental health, it pathologizes everything, including the people we treat. The truth is that medicine and psychology, as a whole, are undergoing a paradigm shift. Dr. Powers will describe how hope, optimism, and strengthened resources provide the necessary ingredients for addicts to flourish in recovery. By using the emerging empirical evidence from the fields of positive psychology, philosophy, and more, Dr. Powers will present a gamechanging and effective approach that he has named Positive Recovery. CEO / Board Roundtable: The Art of Inspired Leadership: How Culture Can Transform Our Organizations, Move Our Field, and Improve Client Care - Miles Adcox, MS, CEO of Onsite A look at what we can learn from other industries on mentoring and recruiting new talent and why generations x,y and z are leaving the field for more inspiring and less taxing work. Insights gained from working with hundreds of addiction professionals in leadership roles over the last 5 years across all generations will be presented and explored. A strategy for leaders going forward and how together we can bridge the generational leadership gap in the treatment industry. 12:30pm-2:00pm ROUNDTABLE LUNCHEONS Continued Marketing Roundtable: “Communicating Now and Then: Using Technology & Social Media to Enhance Treatment, Aftercare, and Alumni Services” - Dorothy Dorman, CEO of Harmony Foundation and Marvin Ventrell, Director of Harmony’s Community & Alumni Relations Office This session will cover methods for using technology and social media in four key areas: serving clients in residence, serving clients in aftercare, serving alumni, and marketing treatment programs. The presentation will include information on blogging as an educational tool, using a mobile phone app as an aftercare component, using E-readers for young peoples’ recovery, evaluating web and social media data, staying connected with alumni through Facebook and Twitter, marketing treatment programs through social media, and tracking success rates for evidence based program development. Insurance Roundtable: Privacy / Cyber Liability Risks in the Treatment Industry ~ Are your Organization’s Financial Assets Protected? - Sean F. Conaboy, Broker-NSM Insurance Group – Phila. Pa. and Richard Willetts, CPCU, ARM This dynamic presentation and discussion will explore one of the greatest threats to the Fiscal Health of Treatment Programs today! The TRUTH is regardless of an Organizations perspective on this issue - you will be held financially liable for costs associated with a HIPPA or HITECH violations. Does your organization have coverage for Breach related expenses such as Notification – Public Relations- Forensics- Credit Monitoring- Business Income Loss- Legal Defense $ Costs associated with Patient / Clients Suits ? The good news is financial disaster can be averted. Encourage attending the Luncheon to find out how! Sponsored by Origins 2:00pm – 2:30pm Refreshment Break in Exhibit Area 2:30pm-3:30pm Workshop A - Abstinent 12 Step Oriented Treatment as Part of the Continuum - It is not us against them! - Charles W. Morgan, MD, FASAM, FAAFP Medical Director, Seabrook House, Inc. Chapman Sledge, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Cumberland Heights Addiction Treatment Center Kenneth W. Thompson, MD, FASAM, Medical Director, Caron Treatment Centers Workshop B - Treating Co-Occurring Disorders - Tina Black, LCSW - Clinical Services Director, Talbott 5:30 pm Board Reception Sponsored by Caron and NSM Insurance Caron’s Jasper Chen See Award Join us for Dinner and Entertainment by the Tejas Brothers! This workshop will hopefully stimulate critical thinking in regards to recovery and a patient centered approach supporting the use of abstinent based, 12 step oriented treatment as an important part of the continuum for substance use disorders. It will ask the question of what is recovery and discuss total abstinence as the Gold standard for the trajectory of outcome. This is not a presentation that abstinence is good and maintenance is bad. Addiction will be discussed as a chronic medical illness requiring ongoing monitoring and treatment interventions. Abstinent based 12 step oriented interventions will be discussed as an active process that improves the alterations of neural plasticity of addiction in addition to supporting the development of adequate scaffolding leading to life long recovery of this chronic disease. 12 Step oriented, abstinent based treatment is discussed as consistent with addressing addiction as a chronic disease supporting the necessary lifestyle, psychosocial, spiritual and medication interventions. Interventions such as opioid maintenance, anti-craving drugs, blockers and deterrents in an abstinent based model will be discussed. 12 step recovery will be discussed as a disease modifying medication. Outcome studies for medications, psychosocial and spiritual interventions will be reviewed and critiqued. The need for more science on abstinent based, 12 step oriented interventions will be discussed. In this workshop, the link between substance use and mental disorders, as well as the significance of the issue in US population, will be discussed. Participants will gain a better understanding of the complications and challenges related to treatment of addiction with co-occurring psychiatric disorders and the impact dual diagnosis has on the course of treatment and outcomes. Presenter will discuss tools for assessing and diagnosing the problem, as well as innovative treatment modalities for simultaneous treatment of multiple disorders in a single treatment environment by a single treatment team. After forming in the fall of 2006, the Tejas Brothers quickly became the subject of big conversation around the stockyards of Fort Worth. Within a few short years, they had earned the respect as one of the best live acts in Texas. The group’s debut CD was recognized as the 7th most played album for 2009 by the Americana Music Association. With the release of their 2nd album, Kelly Dearmore of the Dallas Observer said, “The quartet is once again proving itself one of the best bands in the state.” The group is now working on their 3rd and most anticipated release. Roothog Radio says, “If this music doesn’t put a wiggle in your walk, you’d better get your hearing tested.” MONDAY, MAY 20 7:00am–8:00am 7:30am – 3:30pm 7:30am – 8:30am Twelve Step Meeting Exhibits Open Continental Breakfast – In Exhibit Area 8:30am – 9:30am Workshop A - Women and the Impact of Addiction: Special Issues in Treatment and Recovery Cheryl Knepper, MA, LPC, ATR-BC, CSAT-S, ICCDPD, Vice President of Caron Continuum Services Sponsored by Tully Hill Substance abuse impacts women from all walks of life. About 92% of women who need treatment for alcohol & drug dependence do not receive it for fear of losing their children, their jobs, shame, guilt, lack of family and money. Today women face a multitude of complicating factors. Addictions are complicated by the fact that many individuals struggle with more than one at any given time making recovery at times seem impossible. This presentation will focus on current trends, current treatment approaches and how to support a recovery plan that will provide accountability, support and recovery for life. Workshop B - Advanced Techniques in Understanding and Treating Chronic Relapse in Adults - Heidi Voet Smith, MA, LPC , Burning Tree Recovery Ranch Properly identifying, understanding and treating chronic relapsers is a difficult task that many treatment providers face today. This workshop will deconstruct and clearly define this population of difficult clients. Treatment protocols will be discussed in detail as well as when to refer chronic relapsers to specialty treatment. The workshop is interactive and utilizes film clips to display various characteristics of the chronic relapser. 9:30am – 10:00am Coffee Break in Exhibit Area Sponsored by Cumberland Heights 10:00am – 11:00am Plenary Session – A Comprehensive Response to the Opioid Crisis Marvin D. Seppala, MD, Chief Medical Officer Hazelden Foundation Scott Hesseltine, Chemical Dependency Program Supervisor, Hazelden Center City Fred Holmquist, Director of The Lodge at Hazelden Treatment admissions for prescription opioid dependence have increased at least four fold since the mid nineties and prescription opioid overdose death has fueled the increase in prescription drug overdoses which are now the number one accidental cause of death in the U.S.; higher than motor vehicle accidents. Our treatment programs are experiencing regular unit milieu problems and we have seen deaths due to opioid relapse shortly after treatment. As a result of this crisis Hazelden has reviewed the literature and examined our opioid dependence treatment services to enhance the treatment of this group. We have responded by enhancing the treatment of opioid dependence; including alterations in group therapy, altering education about opioids and by instituting protocols for the use of evidence based medication assisted treatment. Three aspects of our response will be described by the three presenters. First: the opioid crisis and our decision making as an organization, then pharmacology and use of extended release, injectable naltrexone and buprenorphine. Second: the treatment experience and our response as described by an addiction counselor. Third: an historical and philosophical explanation for use of these medications in a 12 Step, abstinence based treatment program. 11:15am – 12:00pm Workshop A - Systemic Recovery: Assessment, Support, Accountability, & Outcome Research for the Entire Family System - John Southworth, Southworth Associates and Caroline Smith, Pine Grove Behavioral Health Workshop B - “Back from the Abyss – How On-Campus Collegiate Recovery Programs Are Changing the Face of Treatment and Higher Education.” - Bob Ferguson, Founder & Director of Jaywalker Lodge Sustainable change is hard for clients and even harder for some families. Research clearly indicates that if a family system embraces recovery, addiction recidivism is reduced. The goal of this session is to provide addiction treatment leaders with cutting edge techniques to support families struggling with the disease of addiction. We will discuss the advantages of using a focused, effective task centered model designed to support the whole family while simultaneously intervening on each individual within the system. An overview of project conception and curriculum will be explained. This discussion will include key areas of assessment, readiness for change, personal accountability, and the individualized support needed when addressing co-occurring issues. Professionals will learn the importance of leveraging monthly outcome data to motivate and enhance system change. Finally, we will discuss how to utilize these techniques when working with diverse client systems. As the “youth movement” in addiction treatment takes hold - with the average age of those seeking recovery from addiction continuing to decline - treatment providers are grappling with a new set of challenges in terms of integrating higher education into the continuing care plans of their newly sober clients. Specifically, the question of how, when and whether a 20-something addict in early recovery should attempt to return to a college campus poses the ultimate high risk / high reward dilemma for provides and patients alike. This presentation will provide an overview of several unique approaches to on-campus collegiate programming; including an examination of the pros and cons of both program structures that are driven by treatment centers, as well as those that are organized and managed by the colleges themselves. An examination of available data will include both academic and sober outcomes; as well as enrollment trends and graduation rates at collegiate recovery communities around the country. 12:00pm – 1:30pm Annual Awards Luncheon/Welcome New Members Sponsored by Pine Grove, Southworth Associates and Alina Lodge • Nelson J. Using the principles of MIT, the presenter has developed, with Dr. Stephanie Covington and Rick Dauer, Helping Men Recover, the first gender-responsive and trauma-informed treatment curriculum for men. This curriculum addresses what is often missing in prevailing treatment models: a clear understanding of the impact of male socialization on the recovery process, a consideration of the relational needs of men, and a focus on the issues of abuse and trauma. Attendees will learn key skills for more effectively engaging men in clinical services, a clearer delineation of the phenomenology of men’s trauma, and also be able to experience some exercises from the presenter’s groundbreaking curriculum Workshop B - Healing the Addicted Brain - Dr. Harold C. Urschel, III MD, MMA, author of The Addicted Brain Findings from decades of NIH research on alcoholism and addiction rarely find their way into clinical treatment programs. Consequently, this session’s purpose is to provide accurate, scientifically excellent information about alcohol and drug addiction treatment which can allow addicts to control cravings and reduce the physical brain injury caused by addiction, in order to inspire hope in the attendee. This session can provide valuable information for clinicians and treatment providers including those with limited treatment resources to help them understand how to implement these new science-based changes into the new Accountable Care Organization health plan structures. 3:00pm Exhibitors may breakdown TUESDAY, MAY 21 7:00am – 8:00am Twelve Step Meeting 8:00am – 9:30 am Sponsored by Gateway Rehab Closing Plenary Breakfast - Affordable Care Act Over the last year you have heard a lot about the Affordable Care Act, Essential Health Benefits, Obama Care and how all of this has impacted and will continue to affect our field.
