All known causes of depression, such as pain, psychological trauma, lack of social support, or sleep problems, trigger an inflammatory response. This research tells us why women are vulnerable to depression in the last trimester of pregnancy and postpartum. This session examines the link between depression in pregnancy and preterm birth, and explains why breastfeeding protects maternal mood. HPS 2 10:20–11:50 am Racial Disparities in Infant Mortality, Breastfeeding, and Sleep Practices The U.S. is now 41st in the world in infant mortality, currently ranked behind many countries that spend far less on healthcare. This is due in part to racial/ethnic group differences in infant mortality. In this session, you will learn about the physiology of racism and how it increases risk for health problems, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, depression, and preterm birth. We will discuss ways to improve infant survival by helping mothers manage stress, and by encouraging breastfeeding and safe sleep practices that are consistent with their cultural values. Luncheon HPS 3 11:50 am–1:00 pm 1:00–2:30 pm Weighing in on Obesity and Breastfeeding Public health officials have been sounding the alarm about the “obesity epidemic,” not only in the U.S., but in industrialized nations around the world. In response, breastfeeding is offered as an important preventative measure for both maternal and childhood obesity. This presentation provides an overview of current research on surprising causes of obesity, such as sleep disorders, psychological trauma, and discrimination, and outlines the limitations of current approaches. This session also describes research on the impact of BMI on breastfeeding, and provides practical steps for working with mothers with higher BMIs. HPS 4 2:50–4:20 pm Nighttime Breastfeeding and Postpartum Depression New mothers are often advised to avoid nighttime breastfeeding in order to prevent postpartum depression. While this advice is well-intended, no one knows if it even works and it can be quite problematic for breastfeeding women to maintain. Using date from the Survey of Mothers’ Sleep and Fatigue, we examine the relationship between feeding method, depression, and maternal fatigue. This presentation also summarizes strategies that can be used to support exhausted new mothers. 2015 Healthcare Provider Seminar La Leche League of the Sunshine State 3 CERPS/CEUS 6.5 CERPs /CEUs for lactation consultants, nurses, dieticians, and midwives have been granted for this Healthcare Provider Seminar from their respective organizations. Six additional continuing education sessions will be offered on October 10-11, 2015 at La Leche League of the Sunshine State’s Parenting Conference. 8.5 CERPs/CEUs for IBCLCs, nurses, dieticians, and midwives have been granted, giving registrants attending both conferences the opportunity to earn a total of 15 CERPs/CEUs. Early Bird Registration is available now through May 1st. Register soon to take advantage of discounted rates. Our Healthcare Provider Seminar featured speaker, Kathleen Kendall-Tackett, will present the first three sessions on Saturday. The fourth will be conducted by Lori Shad, IBCLC. Debbie Albert, PhD, BSN, IBCLC will present the Sunday morning sessions. Both Lori and Debbie are active LLL Leaders in their respective communities. The Parenting Conference’s breastfeeding education track for Saturday and Sunday is outlined on the following pages. Please note that meals are not included in the Parenting Conference registration fee. NOISE POLICY While attendance is not limited to healthcare providers, the topics cover technical content and require an intensive learning environment. Quiet breastfeeding babies under the age of six months are welcome; however, you will be asked to choose a seat in the rear of the room near an exit door so that you may attend immediately to any situation that may distract others, including happy baby noises. Please be respectful of another’s need to hear and learn from the speaker and quietly respectful to the speaker who is presenting. La Leche League is not necessarily in agreement with, or responsible for, the statements made by the speakers at this seminar. 2015 Healthcare Provider Seminar La Leche League of the Sunshine State 4 2015 Parenting Conference Schedule Breastfeeding Education Track Saturday, October 10 CERP Session 1 101 CERP 8:30–10:00 am Mother-Infant Sleep Location and Nighttime Feeding Behaviors Kathleen Kendall-Tackett, PhD, IBCLC, FAPA Healthcare providers and public health officials are increasingly telling mothers not to sleep with their babies. How is this impacting mothers’ behavior? This presentation will show U.S. data from the Survey of Mothers’ Sleep and Fatigue. The survey data provides information on where babies start and finish the night, what mothers are telling their friends family and healthcare providers, and how they feel about their sleep arrangements. It also addresses the issue of whether the policy of asking mothers to never share a bed with their babies is having an unintended effect. This presentation will also consider the policy implications of the AAP 2011 statement of safe infant sleep, and current findings and advice given to new parents. CERP Session 2 201 CERP 10:15–11:30 am Breastfeeding and Survivors of Adverse Childhood Experiences Kathleen Kendall-Tackett, PhD, IBCLC, FAPA Can events from childhood influence a woman’s current mothering experience? Yes, they can, but they don’t have to be the blueprint for the rest of her life. Adverse Childhood Experiences can influence women through five possible pathways: physiological, behavioral, cognitive, social, and emotional. This session provides an overview of the latest research on the effects of childhood abuse; its impact on breastfeeding; how it can affect a woman’s body, mind and spirit; and what she can do to cope. CERP Session 3 301 CERP 1:00–2:30 pm Birth Trauma: Causes and Consequences of Childbirth-Related PTSD Kathleen Kendall-Tackett, PhD, IBCLC, FAPA Recent studies have found that as many as 1 in 4 women have symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following their births. What types of symptoms do they have and how do these symptoms impact breastfeeding and women’s emotional health? In this session, you will learn about the new DSM-5 criteria for PTSD and why some types of births are more likely to cause symptoms. You will also learn how these symptoms might impact breastfeeding, and what mothers and practitioners can do to help. CERP Session 4 401 CERP 2:45–4:00 pm Supporting Diverse Families Lori Shad, IBCLC In our roles as breastfeeding support professionals, we often encounter families that, on the surface, may appear very different from our own. When helping serve gay, lesbian, transgender, and queer parents, many lactation professionals worry about tripping over unfamiliar language. In this session, we will learn accepted terminology, discuss bias, and explore some common concerns many LGBTQ parents face, as we strive to provide the best care for all of the families we support. 2015 Healthcare Provider Seminar La Leche League of the Sunshine State 5 Sunday, October 11 Parenting Conference Breastfeeding Education Track CERP Session 1 501 CERP 8:30–10:00 am The Trials & Tribulations of the Affordable Care Act Debbie Albert, PhD, BSN, IBCLC Getting frustrated with the Affordable Care Act, and what it means for health care services? Having trouble navigating insurance, DME, and the legal-speak associated with it? Understand the current market so that you can communicate more effectively with the women you serve. Take a close look at the ethical considerations with this process and ways that you can help initiate change. CERP Session 2 601 CERP 10:15–11:45 am Milk Supply Triage… or What’s Going on with My Milk Supply? Debbie Albert, PhD, BSN, IBCLC With the increasing percentage of high risk infants who survive, and the increasing number of women who have to work, the laws of supply and demand get a bit jostled at times. Be prepared for an interactive program that will help you get to the bottom of milk supply dilemmas. La Leche League is an international, nonprofit, nonsectarian organization dedicated to providing support, encouragement, Information, and education to women who choose to breastfeed. The mission of La Leche League is to help mothers worldwide to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information and education, and to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development of the baby and mother. LA LECHE LEAGUE PHILOSOPHY Mothering through breastfeeding is the most natural and effective way of understanding and satisfying the needs of the baby. Mother and baby need to be together early and often to establish a satisfying relationship and an adequate milk supply. In the early years, the baby has an intense need to be with his mother, which is as basic as his need for food. Breast milk is the superior infant food. For the healthy, full-term baby, breast milk is the only food necessary until the baby shows signs of needing solids, about the middle of the first year after birth. Ideally the breastfeeding relationship will continue until the baby outgrows the need. Alert and active participation by the mother in childbirth is a help in getting breastfeeding off to a good start. Breastfeeding is enhanced and the nursing couple sustained by the loving support, help, and companionship of the baby's father. A father's unique relationship with his baby is an important element in the child's development from early infancy. Good nutrition means eating a well-balanced and varied diet of foods in as close to their natural state as possible. From infancy on, children need loving guidance that reflects acceptance of their capabilities and sensitivity to their feelings.
