During the parent session, the students will be with teachers working on a related craft activity. All participants will get the "Superhero Power WRITE Up Kit" to Knock Out Their Worries! Make dinner a selfless act by joining us for a fundraiser to support Lisbon Elementary. Sincerely, Michael Caldwell Principal SCHOOL NEWS HOWARD COUNTY LIBRARY BATTLE OF THE BOOKS: This Friday evening ten, fifth-grade LES teams will be participating in the 8th annual Howard County Library Battle of the Books. These students began preparing for this competition in October by each reading the same 16 predetermined books, memorizing the title and author of each book, and answering questions about each book. Each team will work together during the “battle” to answer 50 questions asked by a moderator. Questions can include a direct quote from one of the book characters, a statement about something that happens in the book, a passage taken directly from the book, or details about an illustration or picture. Winning teams receive prizes. Battle of the Books improves reading comprehension, builds vocabulary, and teaches teamwork and good sportsmanship. This means that approximately 1/3 of the 5th graders in Howard County are participants in the Battle of the Books! Good luck LES teams! MARYLAND SUMMER CENTERS: The Maryland Summer Centers for Gifted and Talented Students is celebrating its 48th year this summer. Programs are available for Gifted and Talented students/advanced learners currently in grades 3 through 12. Subject areas include Ecosystem Education, Engineering and Robot Design, Fine and Performing Arts, Creative Writing, Physics of Wind and Solar Power, Space Engineering and Robotics, as well as Biotechnology and Forensic Science. Some Centers offer a residential experience and others are held during the day only. ALL Centers offer partial or full financial assistance! ISO…JUDGES & COACHES FOR THE GRADE 5 SIMULATED CONGRESSIONAL HEARING!: On Friday, May 29th, our fifth graders will participate in the Simulated Congressional Hearings. This event is an opportunity for our students to “show off” their knowledge of the U.S. Constitution and government. We need your help! We need judges- one day commitment includes training and lunch on Friday, May 29th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. We need coaches/volunteers for group work with the students - various days in mid-May. A schedule will come out later with specific dates and afternoon times. You do NOT need to be an expert on the Constitution to help us! Thanks so much for your help. 2015 KEYS FOR READING PROGRAM – Don’t forget to step up to the plate with the Frederick Keys, “Keys for Reading” Program. How Does the Program Work? • Bookmarks and information sheet will be sent home on Monday, March 16. • Each student is required to read 3 books suitable for their reading ability in a one-month time period. • Each book will be recorded on the official orange Keys for Reading bookmark, signed by the parent or guardian. • Once completed, instructions on how to redeem the students' FREE ticket and purchase additional tickets can be found on the back-side of the bookmark. Tickets can be redeemed online at www.frederickkeys.com, by phone at 301-815-9939, or in person at the Keys Box Office. **THE BOOKMARK IS THE TICKET VOUCHER! Please do not throw it out or return it to school.
