Why Living Seas
We don’t just go through the motions.
Living Seas ensures that each student feels comfortable, confident and competent in a variety of diving scenarios
beyond graduation.
•
Comprehensive approach
If you have any questions about diving after your Open Water course, we’ll address them during the
Living Seas PADI Advanced Open Water Programme. Most errors and problems in the water can be
traced to a lack of understanding, and in this course, we will troubleshoot those issues, fill knowledge
gaps and correct skill deficiencies.
•
Thorough pedagogy
With our Advanced course, we exceed the PADI curriculum by introducing the use of a backplate to
improve the student’s grasp of trim and buoyancy. To help students feel truly at ease underwater, the
course will examine, in detail, the most efficient and comfortable position to assume while diving – and
how best to achieve it. The classroom tutorial precedes the pool session so that the understanding of
technical concepts may be reinforced during the practical.
•
Focused instruction
Classes are conducted in a small-group setting, with a maximum student to instructor ratio of 4 to 1.
Our Advanced Open Water Course emphasizes hands-on (and fins-on) learning, so students will be
taught the ideal trim (position) and kick techniques on land before proceeding to try them in the pool.
•
Customized coaching
We believe it is important that our students truly understand the material, so we make sure that
instructors see each class through from start to finish. Our instructors plan lessons to suit the learning
speed of each student. Class schedules are also arranged at our students’ convenience.
•
Value-added with GUE expertise
Finally, Living Seas instructors are all active Global Underwater Explorer divers, so our students can
look forward to tapping into our knowledge and know-how beyond recreational diving. In particular,
our Advanced Open Water Course will introduce students to different propulsion techniques including
the frog kick, backwards kick and helicopter turn. Students will also learn to deploy a surface marker
buoy, which divers use to indicate their position to their surface safety boat.

Frequently Asked Questions
Find the answers to commonly posed queries below. Have more questions? Email info@livingseas.com.sg.
•
How is the Advanced programme different from the Open Water course?
The Open Water course is a compulsory entry point for divers who are new to the sport. If you’re keen
to take your interest further as well as boost your comfort and confidence in water, you should
undertake the Advanced Programme. It will expose and prepare you for a number of adventure dives.
In particular, being able to dive deeper (up to 30 meters) lets you encounter a greater diversity of
marine life that exist at different depths. Also, the Living Seas Advanced Open Water Course will finetune your buoyancy control and diving techniques so you’ll move more efficiently underwater.
•
Do I need lots of diving experience before taking up the Advanced course?
The course is open to all with the PADI Open Water certification. There’s no need to acquire more
experience before taking up the Advanced course, as it’s better to learn proper diving techniques before
any bad habits develop.
•
Will I get to choose the kind of adventure dives I wish to attempt?
We offer any of the adventure dives that are available in the curriculum. However, the course focuses
on deep, navigation, boat, and drift dives as these are the most common dives that local divers would
do. The first two are compulsory.
•
How does the course address the risks of diving deeper?
In addition to adventure dives, you’ll learn how to safely and effectively manage a deeper dive, with
special attention to decompression techniques and control of the ascent.
•
Is the theory lesson compulsory?
Yes, it will provide some detail in understanding the nine underwater movements better.
•
Is the pool session compulsory?
Yes, you will need the hands-on experience in confined water. The pool environment allows you to
focus on mastering the various dive techniques and improving buoyancy control before you embark on
advanced open water dives.
•
Why do you use the backplate and wing system instead of the standard jacket BCD (Buoyancy
Control Device)?
The backplate and wing system offers more benefits. It gives more precise buoyancy control
underwater, and it’s a more comfortable setup to dive with.
•
Can I use my own gear for this course?
That depends on what you have. We recommend the backplate and wing system, but you can use your
own BCD if preferred. However, only jet fins or rigid non-split fins should be used for this course.
Without them, you will not be able to execute the kicks and propulsion techniques that are taught.
•
Do I need to find my own buddy or can I take up the course alone?
Taking the course alone is possible, although you may have more fun if you’ve a friend with you.
•
We have a group of 5 (or more). Are we able to take up the course together?
For groups larger than 4, we’ll get another instructor to assist with the class. You can do the course
together, but for certain in-water skills, you’ll be split into smaller groups so that you get the benefit of
increased attention and safety.

experience. Classes are not only small, but are also conducted in an interactive, instructor-led format
instead of video instruction. Furthermore, there are no hidden costs involved. Our fees include all
certification, materials and rental gear needed for the course. We spare no expense in keeping all
equipment well maintained and regularly serviced, and work with only the most trustworthy dive
companies in the region.
•
