“YOU’LL HAVE TO
MOVE WHEN YOUR
CHILD IS BORN”
LOCAL NEWS
EXCLUSIVE BY
PAUL KELLY
A PREGNANT woman was
threatened with “the street” if
she and her homeless husband
did not accept single-sex accommodation amongst violent
drunks, Local News has
learned.
During February, Winnie
Kavanagh, five months pregnant, was left shivering on the
street, late at night, waiting to
be admitted at 9:00pm or
10:00pm, to pre-booked places
in hostels in John West Lane
and Mount Brown in Dublin’s
Liberties.
She and her husband had
been unable to pay the rent on
her home in Virginia Drive,
Finglas.
Now finally, for Winnie and
her husband Alan Kavanagh,
there is help at last — but it
comes with a Church-appended threat:
Thanks to her local TD
Dessie Ellis (SF, Dublin NW)
the Kavanaghs have just last
week been found a suitable
home in the Diocesan-controlled Crosscare in Finglas.
The couple love the place.
But astonishingly, the Church
threatens to end that, too, just
when Winnie needs it most:
when her baby is born in late
May.

Enjoying the St. Patrick’s Festival at the Full Shilling
Harrowing as it is, the Kavanaghs’ ordeal, according to
Deputy Ellis, is just one example of a shocking number of
cases of official abuse of the
homeless. More and more are
coming to light as his casebook
is filled with hundreds of families in distress:
“There are now 371 fami-
lies in emergency accommodation: that number includes
803 children,” Ellis told Local
News.
The Sinn Féin deputy
notes that those numbers are
up forty per cent since June
2014, shortly before the coalition began announcing a number of much vaunted “housing
initiatives”.
In lengthy interviews with
Deputy Ellis, Mr Alan Kavanagh, Ms Winnie Kavanagh,
the “Placement” section of
Dublin City Council, and the
office of the Archdiocese of
Dublin, Local News has established that:

finding ease and comfort in the excellent
Crosscare facility in
Cedar House, Finglas.
However
the
Archdiocese, which
runs Crosscare, has
threatened them with
eviction “in accordance with our policies” as soon as their
baby is born in May.
Local News’ Paul
Kelly personally intervened with Archbishop
Diarmuid
Ryan’s chief aide,
Joseph Merrick, to
prevent the Church
from carrying out this
threat.
Mr Merrick expressed
sympathy
with Ms Kavanagh’s
case. He warned,
however, that he
“could not guarantee”
that Crosscare would
relax its “No Children”
rule for Cedar House
— even in the case of
a newborn infant.
Deputy
Ellis
sounded shaken and
upset when Local
News
interviewed
him about the Kavanaghs and other
similar cases:
“It’s gotten so bad
now, that if there’s a
Rugby match on and
all the hotels are full,
there’s no emergency
accommodation that
weekend. People are
sleeping in their cars,
surfing couches, or
just out on the street.”
He noted that the
Placement section of
Dublin City had long
since given up on its
policy of housing
mothers close to their
doctors and local
schools:
“They gave one
Finglas woman a
place in Blackrock. It
takes her eight buses a
day to get her children
to and from school.”
He calls for radical
measures, including
dipping into the €7
billion Strategic Investment Fund.
“This is a crisis,
and it’s just not registering with the Government.”
He says that this
year’s official targets,
which include7400
new units, rely for
5000 of them on the
private sector — simply won’t be reached:
“It just won’t happen: landlords are
simply not accepting
Rent Allowance or
RAS.”
He said that massive Social Housing
programmes had to
be started now, and he
ridiculed Junior Minister Alan Kelly’s plans
to provide tax relief on
money earned by
landlords.
“He hinted at rent
controls at the Labour
Ard Fheis, but now
we’re being told that
we can’t have them.”
Local News has
placed its research on
the treatment of the
Kavanaghs with Sorcha Donoghue, who
works with the communications department of Dublin City
Housing.
We have asked her
to find out:
• who in Parkgate
House, the Dublin
City Placement section, threatened the
pregnant Winnie Kavanagh with threats of
“the street” if she did
not accept accommodation with violent
drunks
• what training is
in place there to ensure that clients there
are treated with respect
• if standards are
monitored, and what
action will in future be
taken when those
standards are not met.
Ms Donoghue insists that the Kavanaghs must go
through a “complaints procedure”,
and that it would take
some weeks to establish what had happened and how it
could be remedied.
Meanwhile her
husband Alan Kavanagh is doing his
best to provide for his
family:
“I was in the meat
rendering and boning
business in [his native] Tullow. But I
wanted to better myself, and I enrolled in
a Sports Management
course in AIT [Athlone
Institute of Technology].”
When Local News
spoke to him, he was
waiting for Garda
Clearance so that he
could take up a job
with a charity that
helps inner city children rebuild lives
blighted by drugs and
crime. He was optimistic about his future.
The couple’s first
child is due on May
29.

Clinical Hypnotherapist
KIERAN FITZPATRICK
advises in his regular column on
how to achieve your goals.
UNFORTUNATELY, over the past few years
these articles have been about surviving the
economic downturn and subsequent recession.
But, as is always worth remembering, all things
pass and life goes on. And, thankfully, it looks
like we are beginning to come out of this difficult period again.
No matter what the outside environment, it
is always up to you to look after your own physical and emotional condition. As things change
for the good I am again going to highlight things
that we can all do. Things that we often overlook
or get out of the habit of during our often hectic lives.
And the great thing is, that none of the
things we should do to take better care of ourselves need be hard work or severe. The first
thing is regular exercise. This has well known
physical health benefits. Obviously it can help
to control your weight. But probably more importantly, using your body helps strengthen
your muscles and bones. It improves your circulation keeping vital organs such as heart and
lungs strong and healthy.
Another very important and often overlooked benefit of exercise is its stress reducing
benefits. Anyone with a stressful life should really be taking regular vigorous exercise. It is a
great way to discharge the stress in your body.
And how often do we hear about someone who
has died young being under a lot of stress?
And what comes out regularly as the best
form of exercise is, simply, walking! Recently I
heard a fitness expert reveal that fast walking
burns as many calories as jogging. Walking also
has a very calming effect on the mind. The
rhythm, the left-right motion is therapeutic, not
to mention the connection with nature when
you walk outdoors.
Many people nowadays can also use a personal stereo to listen to music, books, radio
podcasts, etc. while walking and give themselves some personal time out.
So there is no excuse for not getting regular
exercise. Park the car that little bit farther from
your destination. Get on, or get off, the bus a
few stops farther along. (I see so many, even
young, and usually overweight, people wait for
and take the bus for just four of five stops!)
Other simple ways to get exercise in your
normal day would be to slip out for a walk at
lunchtime. Use stairs instead of escalators or
lifts.
Stress is not just a possible killer, it also affects your mental and emotional health. Make
relaxation a priority in your life. Schedule hobbies, exercise and interests into your week. Even
if it is only a little time to read or to watch your
favourite t.v. program.
We all need “time out”. Some time to just
chill and relax. A little time to clear our mind.
Our minds and bodies are intimately linked.
Every thought that we have has a physiological
effect on our body. So while we are thinking
about “stuff”, our body is reacting to these
thoughts. So bad or stressful thoughts will have
bad and stressful effects on your body.
But equally, “good” and relaxing thoughts
will have beneficial effects on your body too. So
the more of it you do the better it is for you not
just mentally, but physically.

BALLYMUN
Sinn

Councillor
Noeleen Reilly has
expressed concern at
the future of the post
office in Ballymun.
Speaking from
the Ballymun Shopping Centre today
she said, “We lost 2
businesses from the
Ballymun area in the
last few weeks, due
to the deteriorating
process of the shopping centre and now
I have real fears for
the future of the post
office.
Some of the
premises in the
shopping
centre
have been offered alternative accommodation in the civic
centre but the rents
are much higher
than they are currently paying meaning many would
struggle to survive in
the new climate.
The rents need to
be reasonable and in
keeping with what
tenants are paying at
the moment. I feel it
is a huge slap in the

that have been very

“The post office
is a huge resource to
have in Ballymun. It
is always very busy
and it is imperative
we don’t lose it from
the area.
Senior citizens
especially need a
post office in the
area. It is not suitable for them to
travel long distances
to collect their pension and pay their
bills.
Some time ago
there was an agreed
site fir the post office
opposite the shopping centre beside
the hotel on the corner of Main Street.
However, for various reasons this was
never finalised, and
there had been a
suggestion that it
may go into the
Super Valu.
“We have a population
of
over
20,000 people and
we don’t have the facilities or services in
the area to match
that. We cannot afford to lose the post
office and I am
pleading with Dublin
City council to make
sure this doesn’t
happen”. stated Cllr
Reilly.
Speaking about
the closure of the
shops, Cllr Reilly said
It is sad to see the
pound shop and Tír
na nÓg cafe close especially as the cafe
would have been
very much a social
spot for people in the
town centre especially senior citizens.
I would have expected at this stage
that some sort of alternative shopping
facility for the people
of the area would be
set in motion. Unfortunately this is not
the case.
We have been
told at council level
for a number of
months that there
are 4 interested parties in a site adjacent
to the old centre but
there is no sign of
any movement on
this in the near future. The site will
cater for a grocery
store but I will be
pushing for a number of other stores
surrounding this as
we have barely any
shopping facilities in
the area.”
"I think the residents in the area
have been let down
badly. Not only is
there very little shopping facilities within
the area but there is
no direct buses to the
nearest
shopping
centre of ONMI and
Charlestown leaving
people
without
transportation virtually stranded’, she
further added.

Interestingly, he

An enlargement

the White House on
1600 Pennsylvania

While Hoban’s

thought that he may
have stayed at St
Luke’s,
perhaps
using is as a study for
his painting and

1780 at the age of 27.
Other revealing
details included a
state-of-the-art security system. This
would have been essential when the
Peace Process —
with which Ahern
was so intimately involved — threatened

granted in the Circuit
Court. In 2012 a total
of 2,868 divorces were
granted. The figures
for 2013 show that was
an increase of 56 divorces granted, making a total of 2,924
divorces granted that
year. This increase
bucks the trend of recent years as between
2007 and 2012 there
had been a decrease of
approximately 10%
each year. The yearly
highest number of divorces granted was in
2007 when 3,658 divorces were granted in
the Court Circuit.
An explanation for
the increase in divorces granted may be
that cases (of high
asset value) that previously would have
been heard in the
High Court are now
being dealt with in the
Circuit Court as couples see the previously
high value of their
property assets fall to
rock bottom, or even
into negative equity.
Another
factor
may be that couples
are unable to pay the
unaffordable
fees
being charged by the
legal
profession.
Those fees have been
reported as €5,000
(per spouse) for an
uncontested divorce
and €2,000 to €3,000
(per spouse) for a separation agreement.
This unaffordability of legal fees and the
downturn in the economy has seen a significant increase in the
number of separated
couples who choose
to become lay litigants
(personal applicants)
and process their own
applications for divorce. This is particu-
larly evident in the
case of couples who
have resolved all family matters such as
maintenance, child
custody/access, property and pensions.
If the husband
and wife feel they are
unable to obtain and
complete the documentation required
for court, DIVORCE
BY CONSENT is a
company that assists
those couples with the
process.
DIVORCE
BY
CONSENT prepares
the actual documentation required for the
Court hearing. The fee
charged is FROM AS
LITTLE AS €600 (per
couple) for a consent
divorce. An exact quotation (not an estimate) is given before
any case is taken on.
The company also
drafts
Separation
Agreements (including a Deed of Waiver)
for a fixed fee of €500
(per couple). With the
coming into effect in
2010 of the relevant
law in relation to
same-sex couples, the
company also drafts
documents required
for the Dissolution of
Civil Partnership.
DIVORCE
BY
CONSENT deals with
clients from all walks
of life and offers a personal, affordable, professional,

Dublin video startup beats Microsoft
DUBLINER Catriona Barry has beaten Microsoft, Apple and a host of software giants
with raves for her launch product, trakAx.
trakAx, which started as DJ sound mixing
software, has morphed into an easy-to-use
video editing package aimed at hobbyists and
small businesses.
Already, four million user worldwide have
downloaded a simple free version, and more
are now taking the 15-day free trial of a version
that costs just €49 — or on limited time offer
for even less.
Now, the 25-year-old Dubliner, and her
brothers Cormac and Colm, have started a
fundraising round. The cash will be used for
marketing, development staff and customer
support.
At present, they work for a small enterprise
centre office in Pearse Street, Dublin 2. But
worldwide, software gurus have already noted
quality of the product and the support:
“I sent an email to trakAx last night,” video
blogger Bunny Cates told her YouTube followers, “and the next morning there was a reply
from the owner of the company. I’m impressed!”
Cates praises the package as “easy to use,
clever and accurate” especially for drop-in
edits and soundtracks.
“I love this software!”
But trakAx CEO Catriona says that, in
truth, the software itself is only part of the offering:
“We have online support, we have video
tutorials showing you how to do everything,
we have the whole support package,” she told
Local News.
All this helps trakAx fill what she calls “the
middle ground”:
“Some packages are expensive and elabo-
Meanwhile, paterfamilias Jim Barry has
left the day-to-day running of his one-time
music-mixing package to his three children,
while he continues with another pet product:

rate. The user is overwhelmed before they
start. Others are too basic, and don’t offer
what you need.”
She believe trakAx offers an easy-to-use
package that, with upgrades and the user’s
own experience, will enable even the novice to
create something “really professional”.
The whole venture started when Catriona’s dad, Jim Barry, was making point-of-sale
software and videos for supermarkets and retail chains.
“He sold the company and decided he’s
fulfil a lifelong ambition, to learn the guitar!”
He was frustrated by the poor quality of
mixing software on offer, so trakAx, oddly,
started as a music mixing package with a small
video add-on.
That may explain why sound works so
beautifully on trakAx.
Local News can report, from bitter experience, that poor sound mixing is a teethcruncher with most video packages: wild
sound or “actuality” from the typical cheap,
built-in microphone can be muted or crudely
overlaid with music. There is no elegant fading in or out — certainly not with the basic
version of Window MovieMaker from PC plutocrat Bill Gates.
“I believe we can solve that problem for
you,” Catriona assures us. The testimonials of
others, freely available on YouTube, suggests
that, for once, the package delivers on that
promise.
Version 5, just released, is available on free
trial at trakax.com. For a limited time, an advanced version of the software is available for
a Spring Promotion price of €24.50, 50% off
the normal price of €49.00.
Dublin Central TD and Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary
Lou McDonald has offered her congratulations to
the newly appointed Dublin City Councillor Gaye
Fagan.
Cllr Fagan is filling the seat vacated last month by
Jonathan Dowdall.
Speaking this evening as Gaye attends her first council meeting Deputy McDonald said:
“I would like to welcome Gaye to our team of elected
representatives in Dublin. Cllr Fagan narrowly missed
out in the local elections last May and I am delighted
she now has the opportunity to work with our fifteen
other councillors representing her local area, the North
Inner City.
Gaye has already shown herself to be a hard working
community activist and I wish her the best of luck as
she begins her new role.”

Robyn’s tears as city bosses put
Book Exchange out of business
THE CRUEL side of the government’s new,
market-driven approach to social inclusion
has just been revealed to Robyn Tuohy, 14.
Shortly after this picture was taken, the
prizewinning pupil learned that her beloved
Book Exchange was to be closed down.
Robyn, a fifth-class pupil in Virgin Mary
Girls National School, Shangan Road, was all
smiles when she learned that her artwork had
won First Prize in the Bookmark Competition
sponsored by the Ballymun Whitehall Area
Partnership (BWAP). But there were plenty of
tears, too, when pupils in Virgin Mary learned
that the Partnership had lost a “tendering
process” — which means that BWAP will close
its doors at the end of the month. Their Book
Exchange will be no more.
All Social Inclusion Community Activation
Programmes (SICAPs) now have to submit
“tenders” as to how they will deliver their services. These submissions will decide whether or
not they will be grant-aided by Local Authorities (a component of the payment comes from
central funds).
This process, intended to ensure proper
use of taxpayers’ money, has effectively been
used to curtail and control a host of education,
employment and inclusion schemes, mainly
in poorer areas.
The BWAP is just one of many such efforts
that have been shuttered by this austerity-era
measure.
While this and similar social initiatives use
cash, the vast majority of BWAP’s work is done
by unpaid volunteers. Thus, relatively small
OUR MAN LINO GRABS
HEADLINES FROM
SOUL-SINGING LIONEL
FINAL FAREWELL: prizewinning pupil Robyn Tuohy joined by members of Ballymun Whitehall Area Partnership
sums facilitate relatively large efforts — and a
significant amount of social change, particularly in the area of social mobility and opportunity.
BWAP stalwart Susan Walsh tearfully
thanked the many volunteers who had made
such a difference to the people of Ballymun:
“A big thanks to the volunteers from the
Ballymun Adult Read and Write Scheme: Liz
Carroll, Aileen Bell, Mary McCarthy, and Mary
Love...”
She also thanked Liu Prencheng, Teresa
Croke and the entire Care and Repair team for
their continued support.
“We would also like to thank Eileen
Adams, our Book Exchange Development
worker for her continued hard work as well as
all our regular Book Exchangers who have
made the event what it is.”
SINGING legend Lionel Richie has been — once again —
floored by the tack-tics of self-publicist supreme, “Lino”
Richard Corbally, known and loved as Lino Ritchie. Already,
Jonathan Ross gave the Dublin-born flooring merchant the
red-carpet treatment, name-calling the famous Finglas
store on his prime-time chat show. “Wossy” was prompted
by the soul legend’s joking reference to the Lino Ritchie
store, made during a 2004 concert. At the time, the singer
had told his audience that he “did not sell carpeting”. Similarly, Lino Ritchie has had to tell star-struck fans that he
doesn’t sing soul, though he will happily administer a bar
or two of Three Times a Lady — along with an extrastrength painkiller. Now the daily tabloids have fallen the
salesman’s tall tales about star-struck fans seeking out their
soul idol in canny Corbally’s Finglas-based business. “I’ve
actually had people arriving in the shop expecting to meet
Lionel Richie,” Lino told a credulous hack, who duly reported the “story” late last week. We don’t doubt it for a
second. After all, how could hard-wearing Lino possibly lie
— except perhaps on the floor…

wonderful facility and
has been completely
funded by our supporters and fundrais-

Strawberry
Beds mystery
SCENIC Strawberry Beds was the
scene for this accident last week.
Clearly, a driver was really lucky,
because if this tree hadn’t stopped
them, they would have ended up
in the Liffey!
Protests are continuing every week in relation to the water charges.
Fianna Fáil has selected Councillor Jack Chambers to contest the General Election in Dublin West pictured with Anne Lenihan mother of the late Brian Lenihan Jr. Up to 400 members and supporters gathered in the Carlton Hotel in Tyrrelstown,
Dublin 15 for the selection convention chaired by Senator Darragh O’Brien. Councillors Jack Chambers and David
McGuinness sought the nomination at the closely contested convention. Picture Conor McCabe Photography.
How good are
you at Pool?
You know it doesn’t matter how good you are
at pool, if you enjoy a game, head down to
D15 Cue Sports Academy in Mulhuddart Village for a game with friends.
The club is open to any one who fancies a
game and with their 19 pool tables there is
not only a great atmosphere but plenty of
room and a table available. You can book a
table, you can take part in a tournament on
the night or you can just enjoy a game with
friends.
The Club puts huge energy into youth and
their Junior Academy is for all youths up to
age 13. The Academy is on Wednesday
from 7.00pm and Sundays from 2.00pm5.00pm. All can avail of free coaching aimed
at bringing on everyone’s skills and encouraging young lads to go on and represent Ireland
in European and World Tournaments, as
many have done. The Academy is fully supervised and is a marvellous social occasion for
young people. There are 5 Plasma screen Tvs,
so you need not miss your favourite programme. Young people can enjoy a 3 hour
session for just €5 during these sessions.
The club is wheelchair accessible and has a secure car park underneath with a lift access or
stairs if you prefer.. The club has its own special
needs team and is there to help all enjoy the
game of pool.
Refreshments, drinks and snacks are available and the club is open from 6.00pm till
midnight on weekdays and from 2.00pm till
midnight on Saturday & Sundays.
Of course for the serious aficionados there are
snooker tables and these have come in for a lot
of praise.
There are in house tournaments regularly
and once you’ve got to know the club, you
can play in one of their regular leagues.
There are many Dart boards also available
for a bit of fun.

Axing of Ballymun-Whitehall
Partnership is nail in the coffin
of local community services
THE DECISION to axe Ballymun-Whitehall
Partnership is an outright attack on local communities. Following a tender competition, the
contract for services has been awarded to the
Tolka Area Partnership.
Ballymun-Whitehall Partnership has been
a key driver of progress before and since the
Ballymun regeneration project. It provides absolutely vital services to Ballymun, Santry,
Whitehall and parts of Ballygall and has underpinned a lot of the work of several partner
community organisations such as the Job
Centre, the drugs task force, Young Ballymun
and lots more. Some of the services now in
jeopardy include the Care & Repair service,
certain Education programmes, certain childcare services, and certain employment/enterprise services.
It just beggars belief that two decent community organisations, both with charitable
status, were made to compete against one another to ensure their own survival. The whole
process has divided communities at a time
when they should be coming together to fight
for their areas. Now there is huge uncertainty
about local jobs and about local community
services.
Questions also have to be asked as to why
a Sinn Féin Councillor is signing off on this
process. Sinn Féin sets itself up as a party of
protest yet one of it's own Councillors signed
off on the decision.
However, the blame lies squarely on the
shoulders of the Government and in particular
the Fine Gael mindset that dominates the
Government. At the heart of this debacle is a
belief, widely held in Fine Gael and especially
among Fine Gael ministers, that such community organisations are a waste of money.
They just couldn't care less about these communities or the services that are delivered here
because they have absolutely no understanding of life in a marginalised community. And
sadly, it is yet another example of the Labour
Party unable or unwilling to stand up for the
people it is supposed to be representing. By
Roisin Shortall T.D.
GREAT WIN FOR DYLAN
Dylan Tang boxing for a Drimnagh Selection against a squad from Pittsburgh performed brilliantly and won 2-1.
His victory ensured Drimnagh of an overall win in the Challenge match., and winners of the Donnybrook Ambassadors Perpetual Cup in the Tournament. The fights were televised live in the US.
Good Luck to Michael Avitisian who fights in the National Stadium this weekend. Michael is competing in the semi
finals in the Cadets competition. A victory here will see him go to represent Ireland in Eastern Europe later in the
European Championships. Michael has won two fights already, on his way to the finals.
