More than two years in the making, The Fight in the Fields: Cesar
Chavez and the Farmworkers’ Struggle is the first film to cover the
full arc of Cesar Chávez’ life. Using archival footage, newsreel,
and present-day interviews with Ethel Kennedy, former
California Governor Jerry Brown, Dolores Huerta, and Chávez’s
brother, sister, son, and daughter, the documentary traces the
remarkable contributions of Chávez and others involved in this
epic struggle. The film follows the first successful organizing
drive of farm workers in the United States, while recounting the
many failed and dramatic attempts to unionize that led up to
this victory. Woven through this historical mosaic is the story of
Chávez’s life, from his adolescence as a migrant farmworker and
his early days as a community organizer to the the pivotal 300mile march he led from Delano to Sacramento and his friendship
and landmark political alliance with Robert Kennedy.
Chávez and many others helped bring about important changes
in farmworkers lives. Many of these things are now taken for
granted, such as getting fresh water and public toilets in the
fields, and larger reforms across the industry. The film pays
tribute to the tremendous advances made by Chávez and all the
men and women of the United Farmworkers Union who fought

history of the modern women’s movement in America from

combining dramatizations, performance and archival imagery,
the film recounts the stories of women who fought for their own

heart-wrenching glory. It also doesn’t shy away from the
controversies over race, sexual preference and leadership that

Dr. Who & The Daleks was the first big screen film adaptation
of British television’s most iconic sci-fi hero, and the first time
Doctor Who was ever seen in color! Created to capitalize on
the first explosion of “Who-mania” in the Swinging Sixties,
and based on a story from the original BBC TV serial, this scifi adventure stars British film legend Peter Cushing (Star Wars)
as everyone’s favorite eccentric Time Lord, Doctor Who. Having
invented the TARDIS, a strange machine disguised as a police
telephone box that’s capable of travelling into other dimensions,
the Doctor and his three young accomplices set forth on a quest
through time and space. Their journey takes them into the
dark, undiscovered depths of the universe and to the planet
of Skaro. This primitive world has been devastated by nuclear
war and is now populated by two warring species – a peaceful
tribe known as Thals and a deadly life form heavily mutated by

On the first Friday of each month at 9:00pm, Red Meat’s Max
Cannon hosts the biggest, baddest short film contest in town –
just bring us your short films and we’ll play them on the largest
movie screen in Southern Arizona!
In case you’ve never been to a First Friday Shorts show, here
are the rules: We’ll play anything you’ve made that’s under
15 minutes long and is brought to us on a DVD, thumb drive
or BLU-ray (one film per person, and DVDs must be playable
on a regular DVD player and films on drives need to be in by
8:00pm). Submissions are only taken on the day of the event,
and all entries MUST BE RECEIVED PRIOR TO THE START
OF THE ACTUAL SHOW (we cannot accept films after the
show has begun, or during intermission). All films are played
in the order they’re received. Every film is guaranteed to play
for 3 minutes, but after that the audience can call for the
dreaded “gong” if they’re displeased. If the gong is struck,
our intrepid host stops the film and the next movie begins.
But don’t despair … if your film is gonged, you can re-work
it and bring it back to see if the changes you’ve made have
pleased the audience. This is a great way for filmmakers to try
out new ideas and see how an actual audience responds, so
take advantage. You cannot submit the same film more than
once unless it has been re-worked. Remember, the audience
decides the winner each and every month, so keep them happy!
PLEASE NOTE: We only take the first 15 films that are brought in each
month and the spots have been filling up really fast. We start taking
submissions as soon as we open the day of the show so get your films
in early!
PLEASE BE ADVISED: Since we don’t pre-screen First Friday Shorts
entries, we don’t know what each month’s “film content” rating will be.

musician Giuseppe Andrews (a one-time teen actor
in Independence Day and Detroit Rock City) has made

Nina goes to the city to see her girlfriend, Kathy and Alex are left to care

concocted Phantom of the Paradise, a campy, surreal and sometimes

biz of the early ‘70s. Winslow Leach (De Palma regular William
Finley) is a passionate music composer whose work is stolen by

disfigured in a vinyl record-press accident while attempting to

In his mesmerizing, award-winning documentary Grizzly Man,
acclaimed director Werner Herzog explores the life and death of
amateur grizzly bear expert and wildlife preservationist Timothy
Treadwell. Treadwell lived unarmed among the bears for thirteen
summers, and filmed his adventures in the wild during his final five
seasons. In October 2003, Treadwell’s remains, along with those of
his girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, were discovered near their campsite
in Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Reserve. They had been mauled
and devoured by a grizzly, the first known victims of a bear attack
in the park. In Grizzly Man, Herzog plumbs not only the mystery of
wild nature, but also the mystery of human nature as he chronicles
Treadwell’s final years in the wilderness. In the film, Herzog himself
asks the question: “Was Timothy Treadwell a passionate and fearless
environmentalist who devoted his life to living peacefully among
Alaskan grizzly bears in order to save them? Or was he a deluded
misanthrope whose reckless actions resulted in his own death, as well
as those of his girlfriend and one of the bears he swore to protect?” A

preservationist Hank (The Exorcist producer Noel Marshall in
his sole and career-derailing turn as an actor and director), who
lives harmoniously alongside a menagerie of untamed animals,
including cheetahs, elephants, lions and tigers on a preservation
in the African plains. When his wife and children arrive (reallife wife Tippi Hedren, who had already experienced the joys
of working with animals for Alfred Hitchcock; teenage stepdaughter Melanie Griffith; and sons John and Jerry Marshall),
for a visit, a long-brewing battle for dominance between two
lions erupts and threatens their very lives. Soon, the terrified
family is besieged by a battalion of wild beasts, and if the look
of panic in the eyes of the actors as an army of lethal predators
close in around them seems unusually real, that’s because it was!
Actual life-threatening maulings were the order of the day on
the set of Roar, and the list of injuries to cast and crew is long
and unbelievable (with some incidents, including the mauling
of an obviously terrified Melanie Griffith, actually caught on
camera and used in the film!). Actually released in 1981 as a PGrated family-friendly adventure film (what????), Roar is the kind
of deliriously gonzo moviemaking that will never be seen again.
