GOOD NEWS FROM LONGCROFT

GOOD NEWS FROM LONGCROFT
FRIDAY 17TH APRIL 2015
Welcome back to everyone after what we hope was a peaceful and productive Easter holiday.
We are sure students will continue to work hard over the coming term, in particular all those
who have GCSE and A-level exams on the horizon. For them in particular this is an incredibly
important term and we would like to wish them all luck and thank all parents and guardians for
continuing to support them in their endeavours.
NEWS STORIES
A Bronze for Longcroft STEM Club
Longcroft STEM Club (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) is proud to announce the
recognition of a team of Year7 girls who have achieved a Bronze CREST Award from the British
Science Association. CREST is a UK award scheme that recognises success and enables students to
build their skills and demonstrate personal achievement in project work. Maddie Cressey, Matilda
Leech, Emily Robinson and Georgia Whitham chose to research, design and build what they described
as a hedgehog home. This has been placed in Longcroft‟s wildlife area, which supports the EcoSchools Action Team's work to try to achieve a Silver Eco-Schools Award. Well done to the team and
good luck with the next level of activities.
Longcroft Business Studies Students Impress University
On Wednesday 18th Match, Longcroft's Year 12 Business Studies students visited the University of
Hull's Business School where, as part of the afternoon, they competed against students from Wyke and
Wilberforce Colleges to design a marketing campaign. One of the Longcroft teams, made up of Tom
Allen, Jess Clark, Sally Heath, Steve Heath, Leah Proctor, Abbie Sparrowe, Ellie Sparrowe and Holly
Tucker were judged the overall winners having produced and presented their campaign for yogurt.
Well done to everyone who took part, especially to our winning entrepreneurs.
Year 13 UCAS Presentation
There will be a presentation by Mr Baker for parents and students on the application process for a
Student Loan at 6pm on Monday 20th April in the Theatre. Students are reminded that they have until
31st May to complete a loan application ready for the September entry.
Bishop Burton College STEM Trip
Before half term, thirty-three Year 9 students attended Bishop Burton College's Science Week on
Thursday 19th March and gained experience of STEM subjects in a variety of contexts. The young
people involved took part in different activities during the morning: "Farming in the Twenty First
Century" looked at the use of technology in farming and "Train like a Tiger" focussed on science in
football and was delivered by Hull City‟s Frankie Hunter, Head of Sport Science and Medicine at
Bishop Burton‟s Football Academy. All students were extremely well behaved and represented the
school admirably.
Longcroft Athletes
The Year 7 and 8 Girls and Year 7 Boys Sports Hall Athletics Teams all qualified to represent the East
Riding at the Humberside round which took place on Thursday 16th April. All teams competed very
well against very strong opposition. A special congratulations to the year 7 girls, who finished in third
place overall in the Humberside Finals. Very well done to all!
