A B A T E is American Bikers for Awareness, Training & Education
The main purpose of the ABATE organization is to work toward continued freedom of
the road by insuring that motorcyclist's point of view is presented to our legislators and
to promote motorcycle safety, rider education and awareness. We are trying to alleviate
the very real possibility of "Big Brother Government". We encourage all our members to
be informed registered voters. We write letters to our elected officials and stay aware of
what is going on with motorcycle legislation, education, and other transportation issues.
We welcome interested persons to any of our activities or to join our organization.

The warm weather has finally arrived, but please be very careful out there! the potholes are as bad as I
have ever seen. I’m sure you heard that Dave DeCarle was killed last month when he was thrown from his bike
after hitting a pothole in Riverhead.
We are about to kick off our Awareness campaign starting with our 6th annual Safety & Awareness Run
with Full Throttle Magazine and the Rushing Wind Biker Church performing bike blessings to all that are
interested. The money we raise from this event will determine how much advertising we are able to provide
throughout the season so please come out and support this run. We will have a police escort from the H Lee
Dennison building in Hauppauge to The Brickhouse Brewery in Patchogue and we will have a 22’ mobile
billboard truck following us with an awareness message.
Due to the tragic and unexpected loss of our 1st Vice President, Stavros Dalambakis, we have made a
couple of changes to the Board. 2nd Vice President, Nick LaMorte has been appointed as the 1st Vice President
and Nancy Gee has been appointed as the 2nd Vice President. Nancy will vacate her position as Public
Relations Officer which will create a vacancy on the Board. Anyone interested in the position should contact
us to discuss the responsibilities of the position. This position is a ‘voting position’ which means the title
entitles you to vote on all matters of the Board. Nancy will continue to hold the positions as Newsletter Editor
& Webmaster because those are ‘non-voting’ titles. Congratulations and thank you for agreeing to help fulfill
our needs!
Our monthly meetings have moved to the Lake Ronkonkoma Firehouse meeting room on the corner of
Portion Rd. & Hawkins Ave. It appears to have been a good move for us. As our organization grows we have to
try and accommodate the members by holding the meetings as convenient as possible for the majority of the
members. We have received nothing but praise about the new location and last month’s meeting had 110
members present. Joe Pizzo is refurbishing a charcoal barbeque that was donated to us and turning it into a
propane grill so that we can soon start barbequing at the meetings again.
Our 2015 L I ABATE Handbook was a huge success again this year. We apologize to those that were not able to
get in this year but the book can only have a maximum of 68 pages. Any more pages and we would have to
change the method that is used to make it and would increase the costs significantly. There are more vendors
than ever that are offering discounts to LI ABATE members so make sure you carry your membership card
with you. I would like to thank Christy, our new Graphic Artist who saved us a significant amount of money
this year and the handbook Chairman, Lorenzo who is responsible for the success of the project. I also want to
thank all of our advertisers for supporting us, so let’s show our appreciation and support our
advertisers!

The next court date for Jason Monet is April 17th. Thank you to the 40+ members who showed up at
the last court date. It had a significant impact on the case! As a result the Bureau Chief for the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office, John Scott Prudente attended our membership meeting last month and did a
good job explaining to us about court proceedings and court cases in general. We have had a couple of conversations since then and I am hopeful that the relationship between LI ABATE and the D A’s office continues to grow and that we can work together to help protect the motorcycle community in the courts.

PREPARE MENTALLY FOR THE THREE KINDS OF SPRING RIDING HAZARDS

At the northern latitudes, motorcycles pop up on the road on the first nice day like a hatch of mayflies:
one day none, the next they're everywhere. And that phenomenon explains why riders need to be extra
smart in the spring.
There are special hazards to springtime riding that require us to be mentally prepared. They easily break
down into three categories: hazards from the environment, from those around us, and from within.
Spring hazard: It's a messy world we ride in
Spring is messy. In the city, the freeze-thaw cycle has opened holes in heavily used streets. In the
country, mud and gravel can easily get washed or dragged onto the road surface and, worse yet, some
jurisdictions may have spread sand or cinders in some areas for traction in the snow. It takes a lot of
spring showers to clean up all this. Meanwhile, we need to anticipate these problems and leave
ourselves a safety margin.
Spring roads
Gravel or cinders are a common spring hazard on rural roads.
Expect a higher likelihood of sand, gravel or cinders at intersections or steep slopes. In farming country,
watch for unpaved roads or driveways where mud and gravel might be tracked onto the surface. In the
mountains, watch for snowmelt sending a slick stream of water across the road. In low-lying areas, be
prepared for the possibility of mud or debris washed across the pavement by flooding. If you anticipate
these problems and they do not materialize, no worries. If you don't and they do pop up, could be big
worries.
In the city give yourself extra space. If you're right behind that car, you won't be able to see the
sharp-edged pothole the car's wheels are straddling. There's another reason to give yourself extra
space. Spring hazards aren't limited to the environment. You also have to consider the hazards posed by
the people around you.

Spring hazard: Drivers don't see you
In some areas, drivers haven't seen a motorcycle on the road for months. They've been trained that
motorcycles don't exist. In the state of semi-awareness most people operate in, that's a dangerous situation for us.
When a driver utters those infamous six words after a crash ("Officer, I didn't see the motorcycle"), he or
she is telling the truth, on the most basic level. Researchers who have studied the phenomenon call it
"inattentional blindness." In one of the most famous studies, test subjects were told to count the number
of passes in a video of people passing around a basketball. When a person in a gorilla suit walked
through the scene, they didn't notice. They weren't looking for gorillas. Many swore it was impossible that
they missed something that obvious, until they watched the video a second time.
Test subjects weren't looking for gorillas and car drivers in the north in the spring aren't looking for
motorcycles. The image of you and your motorcycle may hit their eyes, but it does not register in their
brains because it's not the car or truck they're looking for. Effectively, they don't see you.
Riding as if you're invisible is a good strategy all year around. In spring, that's doubly so.
Spring hazard: We're our own worst enemies
I never completely stop riding during the winter, but the weather means I ride less frequently and for
shorter distances. My skills in March are never going to be as sharp as they are in September, but the
demands of riding are the same, or even higher, because of the hazards already mentioned. See our
spring tune-up tips for some ways to help get yourself back in the groove.
Practicing riding skills
Practicing low-speed maneuvers, braking and other drills can knock some of the rust off your riding skills
after a winter layoff.
Rusty skills are not the only way we can get ourselves in trouble. Impatience is another hazard. A
motorcycle that's been sitting neglected needs a good once-over, no matter how eager you are to go
riding on that first nice day. Pay particular attention to tires and brakes. Don't be so impatient to get on
the road that you find yourself in an emergency situation with spongy brakes and a front tire that's five
psi low.
Impatience to get back into the social aspect of motorcycling is also understandable. But if your skills are
rusty, so are your fellow riders' skills, and group rides compound errors, rather than minimize them.
Patience is really the common theme. There's a nice long riding season ahead — unless you screw up
badly now and hurt yourself. As eager as you may be to get out on the road and once again feel that fun
sensation of riding a wave of torque out of a curve while smartly leaned over, just remember: that curve
may have gravel strewn across it, a driver who hasn't seen a motorcycle in four months may be pulling
out in front of you, and your brake hand hasn't practiced threshold braking in a long time.
Ride to live, live to ride another day.

Motion 9-2015: Motion to accept February 2015 membership meeting minutes as published in
the March newsletter. (Seconded) All in favor.
Treasurer’s Report: Detailed income and expenditures were reported.
Motion 10-2015: Motion to accept treasurer’s report. (Seconded) All in favor.
Guest Speaker: Assistant District Attorney Bureau Chief, John Scott Prudente. Mr. Prudente is a
former homicide prosecutor who has taken his homicide expertise to look at vehicular homicides and accidents. LI ABATE met Mr. Prudente in February, when LI ABATE learned of a plea deal being proposed in the
case of Jason Monet, the driver who hit Sid Hughes. LI ABATE wrote a letter to the Honorable Judge Comacho asking that this plea deal not be accepted. 45 motorcyclists, along with News 12 were present at this
plea hearing. Mr. Prudente was called in to take another look at this case. He spoke with the motorcyclists
present, then asked the judge to postpone the hearing until April 17th. At our membership meeting, Mr. Prudente stated that “You (motorcyclists) are not second class citizens and you are certainly not second class victims. Your point of view will be known, and for that you have my word.” He went on to answer questions
from members. Ideas for community service for Jason Monet were also discussed. The East Hampton Star
and News 12 ran stories about this case and asked for witnesses to come forward. LI ABATE is offering a
$1000 reward for any new witnesses to come forward with new info to obtain a felony conviction .
Committee Reports
Membership: Long Island ABATE currently has 1,180 members. The end of March, approximately 500
memberships will expire. A renewal letter will be mailed. We have introduced three renewal incentives: 1) $5
off for each new member you bring in, up to $20. This will make your renewal free. New membership applications must be included with your own renewal application. 2) You can become a lifetime member for $10
per year up to your 25th year. That is half the cost. 3) A five year renewal is $80. That is one year free. These
incentives

will be outlined in the renewal letter. You can renew membership by mail, online or at a membership
meeting. Memberships can be renewed at any time. Your current membership will be extended for one
year. It is imperative that members renew and that we keep our membership numbers up. It is the only
way we can be effective when we meet with public officials, as we are representing over 1,000 members.
If you are not receiving LI ABATE newsletters or e-mails, please let Kim know and she will update her data
base.
Nancy / Website: Pre-registration for our upcoming Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Run is up on the
website. Newsletter: We will be running a special edition newsletter about Stavros. If anyone would like
to submit a thought or special memory about Stavros, please send to Nancy via e-mail.
Doreen / Legislative Liaison: Doreen, Jim and attorney Dan Rogers spoke on the Eye on Crime Radio Show with host Tom Schillaro, about the recent court proceedings LI ABATE has been monitoring
court cases concerning drivers who hit motorcyclists. (Dan Rogers is a defense attorney that Jim met at
these court proceedings. Attorney Rogers is now part of LI ABATE’s legislative committee.) A link to this
radio show is on our website. Doreen also spoke of the anti profiling legislative bill that will be presented to
the NYS Senate and Assembly. Details about this bill will be found in the newsletter, as well as on the COIR
(Coalition of Independent Riders) Facebook page: New York COIR. Please read the bill on Facebook, like
it and share it. Only one state in the nation, Washington State, lists motorcyclists as a protected class,
meaning that motorcyclists cannot be profiled. Members filled out a victim statement, saying that they
had been profiled because they were riding a motorcycle. These statements will support LI ABATE and
COIR when we go to Albany to lobby this anti profiling legislation.
Joe / Safety Officer: Joe commented about the conditions of our roads after the harsh winter. He stated
that the state, county and towns in our area are ordering over 200 ton of coal patch per day to try and patch
the roads, but it will take time. He reminded riders to take extra caution on the roads. Joe also encouraged
riders to visit the AMA website to find out about laws in each state that concern motorcyclists (ie: helmet
laws).
Chris / Road Captain: Chris spoke of the Rocky Point St. Patrick’s Day Parade that LI ABATE will be
participating in this Sunday, 3/15. We will meet in the Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot in Miller Place. Please
get there before noon as the road will be closed at noon. LI ABATE member, Frank, will be preparing
corned beef and cabbage afterward at the Red River Inn for all participants. The chili run is also coming up
on 3/22.

Kathy / Products: LI ABATE t-shirts in a variety of colors is now available at $10 each. Several requests
have been made for long sleeved flame shirts. Kathy will reorder these shirts and will have them available at
the chili run and membership meetings.
Old Business
Handbook: The handbook will be going to print very soon. If there are any others who wish to advertise,
please let us know immediately. We have a very limited amount of room available. The handbook will be
available at our Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Run.
Grant: LI ABATE continues to pursue grant funds to help us with motorcycle safety and awareness. Tanya Cruz is now assisting us in this process. We have met with her to help get this grant proposal written
and submitted.
IRadio.com: LJ James, from the Road Reapers Motorcycle Club, has begun an internet radio show.
On this website, click on the LI Biker Show link to hear music and conversation related to the motorcycle
community. LJ has graciously offered LI ABATE a one hour weekly radio show, which we will be pursuing.
Nancy has offered to host this show, and Don Gomo has also volunteered to host. If anyone has any ideas
or topics for the show, please let us know.
New Business
Honoring Stavros: Members discussed ways which we can honor Stavros. Bob Laub, former Sgt. At
Arms had called during the week to suggest we begin a memorial scholarship fund in Stavros’ name. Other
suggestions included: a memorial patch, dedicating the campout to Stavros, and a memorial newsletter.
Again, if anyone would like to submit a thought or special memory about Stavros, please send to Nancy
via e-mail.
Corporate Sponsorship Letters are available for anyone who wishes to solicit funds for our Veterans
Appreciation Run.
LI ABATE Booths: We would greatly appreciate any volunteers who would like to help us in a LI ABATE
booth this season, signing up new members and dispersing motorcycle awareness materials. We set up a
booth almost every weekend at motorcycle events, street fairs, etc. If anyone would like to volunteer, please
see Steve Sorensen or Nancy G.
Don Gomo / Empire State Motorcycle Safety Organization will be offering motorcycle safety seminars. Doreen has agreed to host one of these seminars on 4/6, 4/13 and 4/20. She can accommodate approx. 25

LI ABATE Run / Event List
March 22 – Chili Run: Registration from 10 – 11 at Cathedral Pines County Park, Middle Island. The
run ends and the party starts at Finnegan’s Wake, Jamesport. $10 members / $15 non-members.
April 12 – Safety and Awareness Run/ Bike Blessing: LI ABATE is once again partnering with
Full Throttle Magazine for this run. We will begin at the H. Lee Dennison Building, Hauppauge.
Vendors promoting motorcycle safety will be present. A billboard truck with 10 x 22 ft signs will ride
along on the run to help promote our purpose. The run will be police escorted to the Brickhouse
Brewery, Patchogue. Motorcycles will park at the 6th District Court parking lot. All funds raised on this
run will go toward our motorcycle safety and awareness campaign. Save $5 when you pre-register for
this run on our website.
June 14- Veterans Appreciation Run: Bill has once again secured three sponsors who will match
any funds raised on this run. We will be riding to Montauk, with a ceremony at Montauk County Park at
the conclusion of the run. Additional details will follow.
August 15 & 16 – Campout: The campout will be held at Cathedral Pines County Park. Additional
details to follow.
November 8 – St. Mary’s Food and Toy Run
December 12 – Holiday Party
Motorcycle Clubs Runs / Events

Pastor Gerry / Bikers for Christ MC: 4/5 – Sunrise Easter Run. Run begins at the Rushing Wind
Biker Church on Knickerbocker Ave. Church will open at 4:15. Sunrise is at 6:30, KSU 5:45. The run
ends at Smith Point County Park for a sunrise service. Breakfast at the California Diner afterward. Vehicles are also welcome to attend. Weekly services at the church are Sunday at 10 and 5:30, and a Wednesday night meal and service. Bereavement Group at the church, 2nd Thursday @ 7pm. Anyone who would
like to talk to someone at the church is welcome to come at any time.
Queensboro MC: March party cancelled due to the harsh winter weather. Their clubhouse has frozen
pipes and the grounds are saturated.

Patriot Guard Riders: NOA, Calverton, second Wednesday of each month. Meet at 9:45 behind the administration bldg.
Joey / President Riders of Fire: 4/19 - 12th Annual Blessing of the Bikes ride to the Shrine of Our Lady
of the Island in Manorville. Run begins at Applebee’s, Farmingville. KSU 1pm. $20 rider & passenger. Refreshments will be served at the end of the run.
I Don’t Know MC: 5/23 – Annual Lend A Helping Hand (Help to put flags at the gravesites of our veterans.) Meet at exit 49 Park and Ride on the LIE.
Bob / Director LI HOG: 3/21 Blood Drive @ Suffolk Harley, Oakdale, 10:30 – 3:00. There is a real need
for blood throughout Suffolk County. Bob also thanked Nick and Doreen for inquiring about the home in
Manorville for which money was raised through a Homes For Our Troops Run. It appears that the home to
be built is in a flood area, and it is required that the basement be built out of structural steel. It is the supplier of the steel, not the Town of Brookhaven, who is holding up this project.
Lorenzo / Road Reapers: 7/31 – Midnight Run to Montauk. Leave Oakdale Harley at 10:30 pm. We
have a celebrity among us, as Lorenzo was cast as an extra on a recent episode of Blue Bloods.
50/50: $165 to the winner. Winner donated $50 back to the Veterans Fund.

please let me know. I will be doing two months at a time as you will see in this edition. The
Board spoke about advertisements, and there will be a charge if you want to advertise in the
newsletter. Thank you to all who take pictures and load them on Facebook!! I try to find
flyers to all the events, but I do apologize if your flyer doesn’t make it. Email it to me or message me on FB and I
will definitely get it in here..
Mailings: Our newsletter will be paperless. So every month you will be sent an email with a link to the newsletter when it gets posted on our website at www.longislandabate.org. Please let me know if you cannot open it or
don’t get the email about it, and I will help you. It will also be posted on Facebook on our two pages . Do to it
being very expensive, we can no longer print and mail the newsletters out to the membership.
Advertisements: If you are interested in advertising your business in our newsletter, please see the prices on
the last page of the newsletter. Please email me your advertisements . Thank you
Jr. Membership: There is a Jr. Membership page, and if you have children/grandchildren, I encourage you to
print out the page so they can color it and submit it for a coloring contest. This will be in every newsletter. Jr.
