Overview:
The M-1 RAIL External Affairs Intern will provide overall support to the Director of External Affairs and Community Relations
Manager while providing assistance in implementing the community engagement strategy for the M-1 RAIL Woodward
Avenue Streetcar Project. The ideal candidate should possess strong analytical, organizational and communications skills.
He/She must have excellent writing skills and possess a basic understanding of the Detroit transportation landscape. This
candidate should thrive in a fast paced environment while being attentive to details.
He/She must be comfortable working in a diverse community interacting with stakeholders from a variety of racial, ethnic,
religious and social-economic backgrounds. Candidates must also have experience performing community outreach and
service projects. Experience using graphic design software such as Adobe CS5 is also highly desired, but not required. They
should have completed significant course work in the major/minor of Communications, Marketing, Community Development
Economic Development, Social Work or Urban Planning. This opportunity is open to undergraduate students enrolled in an
accredited college or university. Applicants must provide proof that the City of Detroit is their primary residence.
Duties/Responsibilities:
o Assist in the coordination of M-1 RAIL Stakeholder Meetings
o Assist in the facilitation of community based outreach activities
o Coordinate July and August Community Advisory Council and Business Advisory Council Meetings
o Interface with local businesses, residents and other stakeholders as needed in providing Maintenance of
Traffic updates
o Conduct transit ridership survey
o Staff M-1 RAIL Pop-Up Salons
o Assist in sponsorship fulfillment activities
o Coordinate third quarter volunteer project
o Serve as social media reporter during meetings and other events
o Participate in M-1 RAIL Virtual Town Halls
o Contribute copy for M-1 RAIL Blog, “On the Line”, and other external communications pieces
o Participate in meetings to help in strategy evaluation and refinement
o Assist with general office duties

Qualifications:
Required:
o Working knowledge of Microsoft Office 2013, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and Hootsuite
o Majors or minor declared in one of the following:
 Communications
 Community Development
 Economic Development
 Marketing
 Public Relations
 Social Work
 Urban Planning
o Previous experience in managing community outreach events or service projects
o Strong attention to detail
o A minimum of a 2.5 GPA
o Detroit Residency
o Schedule flexibility
o Reliable transportation
o A familiarity with the Greater Downtown District of Detroit (Downtown, Midtown, New Center and North End
neighborhoods)

M-1 RAIL is a non-profit organization formed in 2007 to lead the design, construction and future operation of a 3.3-mile
circulating streetcar along Woodward Avenue between Larned Street and West Grand Boulevard in Detroit, Michigan.
Mission:
The mission of M-1 RAIL is to create a catalyst for investment, economic development and urban renewal that positively
impacts the entire region through the construction of a streetcar circulator system running along and connecting Woodward
Avenue from the Riverfront to the New Center and North End neighborhoods.
