The definitive guide of what to do
and where to go with your children
New Year New Look
:HOFRPHWR6SULQJ
2015 brings a total revamp to our
magazine style and look. We have been sat
in discussion with our designers for a while
now and eventually decided on a new look
that I personally think looks amazing! We
hope you like it too. Please let us know
what you think….
We still have all the usual sections, What’s
On, Clubs & Classes, Party, Find, Win and
Save so we haven't changed any of the
content.
As always our magazine and website is
packed with ideas for you to have fun and
spend time with the kids, but please double
check with the venue before you pack up
the picnic and kids as sometimes things
are cancelled at short notice without our
knowledge.
This year we are asking local children to
feature in our magazines. We had a photo
shoot last month with Jennie at Captured
Moments Photography
2
(www.capturedmomentsphotos.co.uk) and
7 local children. It was great to meet them
all and give them the opportunity to
become local stars. Our front cover was just
one of the images and others that were
taken can be found throughout the
magazine. If your child would like to be a
cover star or to feature somewhere in the
magazine then check out our competition
on page 30.
Remember ‘You have to be in it to win it!!’
So make sure you enter.
We are also looking for local mums to send
us their tip for keeping the kids busy and
entertained. Thanks to Ami Francis and her
3 children for giving us their tips for getting
outdoors. Ami uses lower cost options to
involve her 2 daughters and young son in
activities and spends loads of time outside.
You can send us yours tips via email,
Facebook, Twitter or via the contact link on
our website. We will try and include as
many as we can but can’t promise we will
include them all.

WITH the warmer weather on the horizon,
people are beginning to venture out and
about again. The school holidays at Easter
and Spring Bank are also looming and
although the thought of some time off with
the kids brings an excitement to many, it
also brings the worry of finding activities
and places to visit, into full force!
Parents/carers of Sheffield: worry no more!
With a Sheffield Children’s University (CU)
Passport to Learning, all children who
attend Sheffield schools can access a range
of activities (some of which are free!) which
will earn them special CU credits. Passports
to Learning can be purchased from
Sheffield Libraries for £2 each. They
receive one credit for each hour of activity
they take part in, which leads to 30
certificates and badges at bronze, silver and
gold levels, right up to 1000 hours! So
while having lots of fun learning new things,
they’ll be earning awards at the same time.
CU credits can be earned at over 120
‘Learning Destinations’ (validated activity
providers) across the city, ranging from
museums, galleries and libraries, to martial
arts, cookery,
sewing, music,
dance, drama,
sports, circus
skills and many, many more!
We know from our research that children
who take part in CU activities are more likely
to do better at school than expected. They
also gain more confidence, make new
friends and have loads of fun learning new
things.
To collect CU credits, take the Passport to
Learning to our Learning Destinations, and
get it stamped or signed at the activities.
You MUST ALSO add your child’s name to
their special CU register.
A parent of one of our CU members had this
to say… ‘Getting a Passport to Learning for
my oldest son has had a lot of positive
effects, not just on him but on our family.
We instantly had a new enthusiasm towards
finding new things to do and places to visit
in order to gain credits. Since then there’s
been no stopping us! He's gained an
unbelievable amount of knowledge in a
wide variety of subjects, and has tried so
many new things! His feelings of self-belief
have grown dramatically and he now
approaches new tasks with enthusiasm and
determination.’

International Dance Day - 29th April
'DQFLQJLV*RRGIRU\RX
IN the last few years, there has been an
explosion of dance across Britain thanks to
shows such as 'Britain's Got Talent' and BBC's
'Strictly Come Dancing'. Children and adults are
more interested in dance than ever before. They
will have fun attending lessons and benefit
immensely not just from the great health
benefits but from many the other advantages of
dance that other activities may not have.
According to government reports, three in five
children under ten years old are predicted to be
overweight by 2050. So if your child is not into
sport, you need to find ways to keep the family
active and dancing could be the answer. Dance
is a great way for the whole family to get up and
moving in a fun and exciting way.
Self expression: Through dance, stories can be
told and beliefs and emotions can be conveyed.
Dance can also be used to widen a child's
vocabulary as they come in contact with new
words and ideas. Dance also helps children and
adults express themselves differently from
normal school or work life.
Brain Power: All forms of exercise improve your
blood circulation and improve the flow of
nutrients to your brain, allowing the brain to
function at its best. But the great thing about
dancing is that it involves using use both sides of
your brain: one half for technique and control
and the other for creativity and artistry. Dance
can therefore increase brain productivity and
children can increase their attention spans. All
good skills for school too!
Confidence and self-esteem can also be built
through the many performance opportunities
that come with dance. Dancing builds
confidence which in turn helps to reduce stress
and tension, for both adults and children.
6
Social Networking: Attending a dance class is not
just about staying fit - it is a social networking
opportunity too! At dance classes children have
the opportunity to meet new friends and practise
their social skills.
Dance also requires discipline and motivation,
key skills in lifelong learning:
So you see, dancing is good for you! Dance is
such a positive benefit to everyone’s life, from
baby to adult and such fun so why not try a
class.
Razzamataz Theatre Schools are offering a FREE
Session to new students on the 25th April to
celebrate International Dance Day. Contact

AT Support 4 Dyslexia we offer a friendly
and relaxed environment for students of all
ages to attend specially tailored lessons
which boost confidence as well as literacy
skills.
After an initial assessment you have the
option to attend weekly lessons. Lessons
last for one hour and we are open Mon-Sat
until late.
Lessons are largely computer based
enabling students to have fun while
improving their reading, spelling and typing
skills.
Reading and spelling ability are re-assessed
after 20 lessons. At Support 4 Dyslexia we
have never re-assessed a student after 20
lessons and not seen a significant
improvement.
The company was founded in 2007 by
Managing Director Sarah Broomfield and
remains committed to finding new and
engaging ways of coping with dyslexia.
There are many ways parents can help
children with dyslexia. The most important
thing is to keep learning fun and find ways
to boost their confidence by giving them
tasks that they are able to complete.
Dyslexia screening and assessment can
help to identify if someone is likely to
be dyslexic. Support 4 Dyslexia provides

Learn to Swim
7KH$PD]LQJ%HQHILWVRI
%DE\6ZLPPLQJ
BABY swimming is one of the most amazing
experiences you can share with your baby!
Babies have a real affinity with water. They
spend nine months in the womb, and more
and more expectant mothers are now
choosing a water birth as the most natural
introduction to this world. Water is
recognised as a warm, supportive
environment during labour and provides a
natural transition for your baby from the
womb to the “outside world”.
Babies can be taken into the water from
birth; they do not need to have completed
their injections and very young babies love
the freedom, massage and gentle exercise
that the water offers.
The benefits to both parent and baby of
swimming together are immense and
include:
*Plenty of eye contact
*Plenty of skin contact
*Helping you and your baby feel relaxed and
confident in the water
*Makes swimming a fun and socially
stimulating activity
*Even parents who can’t swim can enjoy
relaxing in the water with their baby
Encouraging a baby to take regular exercise
from such a young age is also an extremely
healthy routine to instil which may prevent
childhood lethargy
But most importantly of all, swimming as
a baby should instil a love of water for
12
the rest of your child’s life.
Even in the bath, there are some wonderful
activities you can share with your baby.
Your baby can enjoy floating on his or her
back in the bath (ears in the water), or just
lie back snuggling up to you. You can try
sprinkling water over your baby’s tummy.
You may even find your baby falls asleep!
We don’t recommend trying to submerge
your baby in the bath – it is too awkward
and both you and your baby are likely to be
upset by the experience. However, you can
allow the water to lap around and over your
baby’s face without any worries.

WITH so many parents & carers working
during the school & nursery holidays, it can
be increasingly difficult to find the right club/
class for your children to attend and have fun
in the process…
Here’s a brief check list to help you along
with your/their choice of venue:
3 Indoor or Outdoor - a consideration if the
weather could be a major factor in your
selection.
4 How flexible are the classes, can they
attend daily or weekly? What time do they
start and finish, it could be that you need
them to have a later stay, do they do that?
