April 2015 - Magic Circle Players

MCP TEASER
News of the Magic Circle Players April 2015
The musical Phantom concludes Magic Circle
Theatre’s 55th season. With book by Arthur Kopit
and music and lyrics by Maury Yeston, Phantom is
based on the novel Phantom of the Opera by Gaston
Leroux.
Not to be confused with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s
well-known 1986 musical, Phantom of the Opera,
Kopit and Yeston’s play was first produced in 1991
and has earned its own reputation as a piece with
considerable musical and dramatic merit. Critics
have acclaimed this version of Leroux’s passionate
story of agonized, unrequited love as more intimate
and sympathetic, capturing better the joie de vivre
of Paris.
Magic Circle’s Phantom is directed by Kathy Murdoch, with Sandy Lundberg, Assistant Director
and Amy Nelp, Assistant Director and Choreographer. Greg Davidson is Music Director. Seventeen
cast members and a chorus/ensemble of 15 singers and dancers bring the passionate tale to life.
In the leading roles are Dalyn Pearson (Erik/The Phantom), Bethany Ward (Christine Daeé,
Erik’s protégé), Jeff Nelp (Gerard Carriere) and Michael Thompson (The Count de Chandon).
Offsetting them are the often-amusing Cholet (George Crosby) and his self-centered wife Carlotta
(Allyson Crosby).
The story combines elements of several well-known tales. Born hideously disfigured, Erik lurks
in the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera House where beautiful music is his only solace in life.
Erik trains the ingénue Christine to operatic perfection, falling in love with her as he does. When a
series of horrifying events reveal the Phantom’s menacing existence, he is cornered in his
subterranean lair. There, his love for Christine, his desperation, and the terrorized society collide
with fatal results.
The music of Phantom is soaring, with coloratura highlights. Especially memorable are the duets
between Christine and Erik and his father, while the ensemble production numbers are showstoppers. Magic Circle Players’ Phantom will amaze.
Please see the Calendar page for the May production dates of this musical.

Auditions!
Souvenir is a comedy based on the
real life story of Florence Foster Jenkins, a
wealthy society eccentric who suffered
under the delusion that she was a great
operatic soprano when, in fact, she could
not sing two consecutive notes in tune.
Nonetheless, she sold out Carnegie Hall in
two hours in 1944.
Souvenir, by turns hilarious and
poignant, is told through the eyes of Cosme
McMoon, Florence's accompanist. He is a
talented musician who at first sees Florence
only as a meal ticket, but their relationship
becomes one of real friendship and
affection.
Needed is one male between the age of 40
to 60 who can sing. Ability to play piano is
a plus. One female between the age of 40
and 60 who can sing very well and very
badly. Auditions will be Sunday May 17
and Monday May 18 at 6:30 pm at the
theatre. Audition material will be available
at the box office prior to auditions. For
more information contact Mark Smith at
970-901-8857.
Souvenir opens September 11 and runs for
three weekends.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Part of the MAGIC of our community theatre is
the CIRCLE of volunteers that literally have
made THEATRE happen for 55 years. We are in
need of volunteers to join our PUBLICITY
Committee, THEATRE FOR CHILDREN
committee and SHOP Committee. You can be part

community, for more information, e-mail
mcp@montrose.net.
Based on the classic Disney film, Mary Poppins,
is the story of a mysterious nanny who magically appears
at the Banks household in London to care for the children
of an unhappy family. Using a combination of magic and
common sense, she must teach the family to value each
other again. An irresistible story with breathtaking dance
numbers and beloved songs such as “A Spoonful of
Sugar”, Let's Go Fly A Kite” and
“Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”.
Auditions for Mary Poppins will be held Sunday, July 26
at 2pm and 6:30pm and Monday, July 27 at 6:30pm. Call
backs, if needed, will be Saturday, August 1. Mary
Poppins opens November 6, 2015 and runs for four
weekends in November. This is a large cast production
with 12 to 15 men, 15 women and, at least, two pre-teen
children. Mature teens will be welcome to audition for
the young adult roles. Male tap-dancers will be a high
priority.

SEASON SELECTION COMMITTEE
Every year a committee of volunteers is tasked with
reading all the plays that directors have submitted and
recommending a potential Season line up to the
Board of Governors. The committee will be formed at
the end of summer, attend a meeting in September to
hear the director’s submissions and then read the
plays with a recommendation given to the Board in
early 2016. If you are interested in serving on this
committee, please e-mail mcp@montrose.net.
