10. News corner
1. Memorial badges for the late Louis du Preez
Magnolia decided to make special badges honoring Louis du Preez who passed away last year on
Comrades. We encourage all Comrades runners to collect a badge and run your Comrades with one of
these special tokens. You can collect these badges from Magda at the clubhouse on Tuesdays or Sundays.
Dirk Olivier will also have a couple available at the club tent.
2. Running movie
McFarland, USA is movie that is currently showing at our cinemas. It is based on a true story.
During the 1980s high school coach Jim White (Kevin Costner), who has taught at a number of high
schools, winds up at McFarland High School in California where the students are predominantly
Latino. The coach soon discovers that not only are the boys on his team exceptional athletes, but he
also takes note of their work ethic, their commitment to one another and their strong family
7
relationships. Despite the economic challenges his team faces, he takes them to compete at the crosscountry championships.
11. Charities
As part of my Comrades Running Experience I am again raising money for the Wildlands Conservation Trust, who in turn are using
the funds for their 'Project Rhino Aerial Support ' Wildlands has been kind enough to give me a signed replica of the
Rhino, they commissioned for Pat Lambie, who is one of the Wildlands Ambassadors. I have also been helping my running buddies
who have also signed on to raise money for charity and one of the 4 charities we support is World Vision. They have been kind
enough to donate us a running vest that is signed by Comrades legend Bruce Fordyce.
In the spirit of charity, I would like to auction off these items. I have created a Facebook fan page, or you can email me a bid, which I
will post onto the page. The auction will end on the 20th of April 2015 at 12pm. At which time I will contact the highest bidders for
the two items. The winning bid will exclude postage or courier service to your delivery address.
In the spirit of charity, I am putting a R2500.00 reserve on the Pat Lambie Rhino and a R500.00 reserve of the Bruce Fordyce running
vest. Please dig deep into your hearts and help our wonderful charities out.If you wish to just make a donation, please email me,
steven.vienings@gmail.com and I will help you through the process. My running mates and I are also raising money for Pink Drive,
and the Starfish Children Foundation.
Thank you taking the time to read my request and hope that you will be able to help. Please can I ask that you forwarded to anyone
that might be interested or willing to help with a donation or a bid for the auction.
Kind regards
Steven Vienings

Dear friends and family
On 31st May 2015 the 90th Comrades Marathon will take place. David (my son) and I are planning to be on the start
line - David to run his first and me my 10th.
Sadly many of you may know friends or family who have passed away from cancer of some sort - or are currently
fighting this disease.
David and I have decided to run his first and my 10th for the charity Pink Drive (breast cancer awareness and
education) to remember friends and family who have died of cancer and in support of my brother Chris who is
currently in remission and a good friend Gerda-Marie who has just undergone chemotherapy for invasive breast
cancer.
We are asking you to consider assisting us achieve our revised target of R 10 000.00 each by sponsoring one of us or
both of us R 90.00. Larger amounts would be most welcome
If you are willing and able to assist you can make your donation in 1 of 3 ways:
i) give me the cash
ii) deposit the money into my Investec account (J. M. de Klerk, Acc number: 10011105679 Branch code: 580105) giving breast cancer as your reference or
iii) making the donation (by credit card or eft) on the official Comrades website
(http://www.comrades.com/charities/race-4-charity) and look for mine or David's profile and make your donation
accordingly
If you are in a position to contribute and irrespective of the method you choose for payment we would appreciate it if
you could let us know via email thus allowing us to keep track of monies received.
All donations must be deposited and recorded by Comrades Marathon by 5th May 2015
We sincerely hope that we will finish this race but irrespective of whether we finish or not any donation made on our
behalf will still go to Pink Drive.
Thank you for considering our request

Dear friends, family and colleagues
For the past eight months I have been training to run the Two Oceans half marathon. I can hear some of
your disbelief, but it’s true!
Since a 2010 student of the Adams & Adams Secretarial Training Centre passed away in 2013 from
cancer without realising her dream of running Comrades, I have been contemplating doing something
to help against the dreaded disease.
While on a trip to Durban as supporter for the 2014 Comrades a challenge was issued by someone on
the same bus to run Comrades for charity... I’m not someone to back down from a challenge, but
Comrades is just a hurdle too far in my book. So I decided on the Two Oceans – better the devil you
know...
This email is therefore a ‘challenge’ to all receivers to follow the link below and make a donation to my
project online, and help me raise as much of the R5 000 (or more!) I have set as a goal for this
project. You are welcome to forward this email to anyone you think may also like to contribute to this
cause.

Your assistance will be highly appreciated.
