RAMANATHAN - 30 One of the much-written-about and also much-criticised in the history of Tamil Cinema is ‘Veera Pandya Kattabomman’ (1959). This film was made at enormous expense, shot in Technicolor and processed and printed in England. It bloomed at the box office touching a record run of 25 weeks. ‘Chitra’ S. Krishnaswamy, the journalist turned film personality (and a good friend of this writer) told him that he worked on the production and directed the film but took no credit. According to him, B.R. Panthulu did not make any profit because of the high cost of production. Kattabomman was actually of Telugu descent and his family hailed form Kandukuru, now part of Prakasam District in Andhra Pradesh. He spoke mostly in Telugu and learnt Tamil when he moved south to Panchalankurichi and became its ruler. He had a brother by name Oomathurai According to historians, he was also a major character which was played by O.A.K, Thevar in the movie. The role was first offered to S. S. Rajendran who opted out due to other professional pressures. According to knowledgeable historians, Oomathurai suffered from a speech defect and did not speak Tamil at all! However many liberties were taken with the character of Kattabomman, which was mainly the contribution of writer, scholar and politician Ma. Po. Sivagnana Gramani who had written a book on the hero. (Murasoli Maran, a good friend of this writer, studied for one term with him in the Madras Law College and dropped out. During that period he asked this writer to do a book on Kattabomman which could be prescribed for non-detailed study at college level. This writer did much research at the Archives of the Tamil Nadu State Government in Egmore. Taking the required permissions this writer was given access to the handwritten diary-dispatches sent by the local officers of East India Company in Madras to the bosses in England. Looking like bank ledger books, they were written in excellent handwriting and had considerable material about Kattabomman whom the East India Company described as a ‘freebooter’. (A freebooter is one who makes a living by robbery on the highways almost like a Robin Hood!). This writer discussed with Murasoli Maran, who arranged for a meeting with the scholar MA. Po. Si who, on hearing this writer, exploded and said that a young man with the name of an American (Randor Guy!) could never do justice to the Tamil hero like Veera Pandya Kattabomman. He virtually hounded this writer out of his study room! When it was narrated to Murasoli Maran he broke into peals of laughter and asked this writer to drop the project and paid him a token fee for the research done by him!) Over the decades Kattabomman had been elevated as a folk hero, being eulogised in ballads, folk songs and ‘theru koothoos’ (folk street theatre in rural areas). In 1947, soon after the British left India, a film company spread the news through film magazines about its ‘mammoth production’ which would be played by the top star of the day, P. U. Chinnappa. But nothing came out of it. Later the Indian movie mogul S. S. Vasan took up the idea and set his story department to research the subject as the prelude for scripting. For several months Gemini writers Kothamangalam Subbu and Vepathur Kittu worked on the project and took copious notes on Kattabomman and his days. In true Gemini style, advertisements were released in the English press announcing the film, but the dynamic Vasan could not proceed further. He had the money and manpower but was stumped. The problem was that the only choice to play the title role was Sivaji Ganesan. But Sivaji Ganesan was now a big star who had not forgotten the ‘Chandralekha’ incident. Whenever the two met socially they exchanged greetings but both felt distinctly embarrassed. The star was rather evasive, not committing himself to play the role and Vasan realised that his project would never take off. Sivaji Ganesan had dreamt of doing the role on stage ever since his boyhood. So he staged the play which written by ‘Shakthi’ Krishnaswami and it proved a big hit. Soon B.R.Panthulu of Padmini Pictures had little difficulty in persuading Sivaji Ganesan to do the role for him in a movie. This is how it all began. The idol wing of the EOW found the idols hidden in sacks in an auto rickshaw. This is the third seizure of idols in the city in 15 days. Police arrested Dhanalingam (38), a film production manager, who was also an agent for a smuggling cartel. They are also searching for two of Dhanalingam’s accomplices. The Chola-era idols are believed to have been stolen from two ancient temples in Thiruvannamalai and Vandavasi areas. Police say there is a complaint registered with Vandavasi police station in January 2015. They suspect the idols were bought from a dealer in Puducherry, whom they are likely to question. This haul comes two days after the police seized a panchaloha Vinayagar idol from a textile store in T. Nagar on May 12. They also chanced upon 900 g of the narcotic amphetamine from a gang of three who had come to the shop to deliver it. The market value of the seized drug is around Rs. 10 lakh. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Chain snatching incidents in West Mambalam Sir, I would like to bring to the attention of the readers a spate of chain snatchings which took place on the mornings of May 9 and May 10 in West Mambalam. I was staying at my parents’ house on Subramanian Street. At around 5.15 a.m I heard a loud scream. I ran outside and found that a man had snatched the chain from an elderly lady who lives in our building. The incident happened when a man accosted the lady who was entering the flat after buying milk. In the pretext of asking her an address, he followed her into the flat and pulled at her five-sovereign mangalsutra. Even though she tried to hold on to her chain and shouted loudly, the guy still managed to pry off her chain. He immediately ran out of the flat and got into a waiting auto and sped away. We later came to know from our milk vendor that similar incidents had taken place with two more women the previous morning on Jubilee Road. However I am not aware if any police complaint was lodged in any of the above mentioned cases. I appeal to women in the neighbourhood to be careful and not to wear any jewellery when they venture out on early morning household errands. – Balaji, Subramaniam Street, West Mambalam, Ph: 98401 07357 Power connection given to building flouting norms EXPERIENCED Advertisement Marketing Executives required for Media company at Ambattur, Anna Nagar, Velachery. Sir, Electricity connection was denied to a building just opposite the T. Nagar MLA’s office (Usman Road, T. Nagar) as completion certificate was not issued to it by CMDA for violating various construction norms. It had earlier housed Sri Sankarapandian Stores. Hence, the store was lit up with the help of gensets. As there was no business activity throughout, it wore a deserted a look. As per the CMDA’s website, this building is listed under the Violation category. For the past few weeks, extensive interior and exterior work has been taken up to spruce up the building. This indicates that it will soon become operational. The building owners have probably managed to get power connection by taking refuge under the Section 113C of Tamilnadu Town and Country Planning Act, 1971, which has become a blessing in disguise for the building owners to knowingly violate the rules, thereby overlooking the mandatory requirement of obtaining completion certificate. It is not known how a building under violation can take up renovation/rectification work, thereby violating the norms again and again. Complaints made by the Association to CMDA have had no effect. – T. Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association, 30, Rangan Street, T. Nagar Remove encroachments before starting ‘Project Skywalk’ Sir, This refers to the proposal of the Chennai Corporation to build a skywalk between Mambalam Railway Station and T. Nagar Bus Terminus to facilitate hassle-free movement of the public, at a cost of Rs. 20 crores. At present, the pedestrians are forced to wade through the ever-busy Ranganathan Street and Natesan Street/ Railway Border Road. What one could infer from the above proposal is that the Corporation does not want to remove the encroachments from Ranganathan Street, Natesan Street and Railway Border Road. Is it an uphill task to remove the encroachments? Will not the inaction encourage proliferation? While the construction of the skywalk is welcome to provide immediate relief to the pedestrians, the Corporation should remove all the encroachments from the above mentioned roads. – V. S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar Magistrate’s probe into biker’s death sparks mob fury A magistrate’s investigation on May 10 at the accident site on 80 Feet Road (K.K. Nagar) where a day earlier a young man had died and two others were injured while allegedly attempting to evade the police sparked off violence by a local mob that resorted to damaging public property and squatting on the road and blocking traffic. On May 9, V. Selvam was riding on the road on a bike with his two friends Raja and Vignesh when two traffic policemen tried to stop the bike. According to witnesses, Selvam tried to evade the policemen but lost control of the bike after one of the constables struck him. The bike rammed against a median and steel rod pierced Selvam’s abdomen. It is further alleged that instead of helping the bleeding Selvam, the two policemen pulled him off the railing and dragged him by the legs to the road. Raja and Vignesh escaped with injuries as they were thrown off the bike. Some of the enraged onlookers attacked the policemen. Selvam died before he could be taken to a hospital. The next day when Magistrate T. Jayashree (of Saidapet Court) arrived at the accident site for a probe, a local mob went berserk and started damaging public property. Police had to resort to lathi charge to disperse the mob but another group of protesters staged a sit-in on the road, blocking traffic for more than two hours and raising slogans to demand the arrest of two policemen. Jayashree recorded statements from Raja, Vignesh and 13 other eye witnesses. She also checked security camera footage and cell phone video clips of the accident. She then went to Government Royapettah Hospital, where two doctors conducted a videographed autopsy of Selvam’s body. Police officers said that the department has placed the two policemen in vacancy reserve. Rotary Club honours violin exponent Violin exponent G. J. R. Lalgudi Krishnan (resident of T. Free maths coaching for poor Std. 11-12 students By Our Staff Reporter Admissions are open for Std. 6-12 in Govt. Girls Higher Secondary School (Usman Road, T. Nagar). K. Padma (headmistress) told Mambalam Times that there are misconceptions about government schools among the parents and they prefer to admit their children in private schools in spite of exorbitant fees. She said that even those from economically weaker backgrounds borrow money at high interest rates to enroll their children in private schools when they can get free education here. There are a number of free schemes provided by the Tamilnadu Government to promote education and co-curricular activities in its schools, most of which have been implemented in her school, she said. The school was started in 1962 and is the only Government school for girls in T. Nagar zone. It is within walking distance of T. Nagar bus terminus. It admits students from Std. 6 to 12. Both Tamil and English medium of instructions are available. It has separate science and maths labs. The library is well equipped with more than 1000 titles. All free government benefits like textbooks, note books, geometry box, atlas, four sets of uniforms, footwear, bus pass and special incentive scholarship for Std. 10 students are provided to the students. Free hygienic breakfast and lunch and purified drinking water are provided to the students. Dr. Mohan Rajan to receive FRCS title Vidyodaya 2nd Street, T.
