Both guitarist Robert Buck, who died in 2000, and original singer, Natalie Merchant, were listeners. Eventually, the four formed a band with guitarist John Lombardo and drummer Tim Edborg. “We’d work for $100 plus pizza and beer,” recalls Gustafson. “We even slept on people’s floors while touring up and down the East Coast.” After hit albums “In My Tribe,” “Blind Man’s Zoo” and “Our Time in Eden,” Merchant left in 1993 to pursue a solo career. “We were having way too much fun back in those days,” says Gustafson. “We’d be in the front of the bus watching a football game, shooting Nerf Basketball against the window while drinking beer. She [Merchant] would be in the back lounge learning languages. We were different that way.” The Commodores 6/6
