MASHPEE celebrating
MILESTONES!
The Mashpee Chamber of Commerce is celebrating its 30th
anniversary, and it has been a banner year: We have over
300 members with an amazing retention rate of 90% (the
national average is 84%). The Mashpee Chamber and our local
businesses, organizations, and town leaders have partnered to
make Mashpee a great place to visit, live and do business. In
fact, the Mashpee Chamber and the town have experienced
significant growth over the years, making Mashpee one of the
hottest destinations on Cape Cod. Businesses have everything
they need here. Visitors marvel at the culture, shopping, premier
golf, natural beauty, and the variety of restaurants. And now, more and more people are
also choosing to call Mashpee home.
One of Mashpee’s biggest draws is that the town is open for business all year long. To
attract visitors in the off season, the Chamber hosts a variety of special events in the
fall and winter, including the Dunkin Donuts Shipyard Pumpkinhead 10k Road Race in
October and our spectacular evening Christmas Parade in December. These events
complement our summer events, including a Clam Bake in July and La Tavola, an Italian
Feast Under the Stars in August. Turn to page 44 for a full list of events. And to make
planning your trip to Mashpee a little easier, we have our business listings on page 82.
Designed to guide, inform and entertain readers, Mashpee Magazine is a handy
resource for planning your visit, move, or new business opportunity. We also invite
everyone to stop by our new office located at 5 North Market Street in the Mashpee
Commons for more information. My assistant Katy Acheson and I will be happy to assist
you. You can also visit www.mashpeechamber.com for more information or find us on
social media.
This year I’m also celebrating a milestone of my own. I just completed my fifth year
as executive director of the Mashpee Chamber of Commerce. Over the years, our
members and I have experienced change, growth and achievements together, and I
look forward to many more memorable milestones in the future.
Special thanks to our board of directors and our president Sue Sciarrillo, my assistant
Katy Acheson, and our office staff Becki Grainger and Amanda Church. I would also like
to thank Town Manager Joyce Mason, the Board of Selectmen, Mashpee Town officials,
the Wampanoag Tribe, Thomas J. O Neill, The Mashpee Enterprise, Dan Cutrona, Kevin
Mac, Gene Marchand, the Mashpee Commons management team, Carol McLeod
Design, Rachel Arroyo, and Cummings Printing for supporting the magazine and
the Mashpee Chamber. I also thank my husband Gary, our members, volunteers and
sponsors for their continued support.
Mashpee is celebrating milestones. Make it your business to find out why!

From Timber to Trade: Mashpee Commerce Then & Today
By Jessie Little Doe Baird
Mashpee has had a long and storied history of trade
and commerce. The Mashpee Chamber of Commerce
organized some 30 years ago amidst a 12,000 year old
community famed for its tenacious pursuit of policy that
would protect the production of goods and encourage
trade throughout the Cape region and beyond.
that Mashpee’s ponds were also home
to mills that handled grinding for the
towns of Sandwich, Barnstable and
parts of Falmouth.
Mashpee was home to the likes of Ruben Kuhkuneaw,
a Mashpee Wampanoag man who traveled to England
in 1760, to successfully petition for the rights of the
tribe to elect its own leaders to pass and enforce its
own trade and commercial codes as well as to ensure
the protection of natural resources. Those resources, which included the least clear
cut community on the Cape, bays and cranberry bogs would produce a long line of
businesses and industry spanning from colonial times.
During the period of the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934, the Federal Government
proposed to move many tribes off of their original lands and regions to create new
reservations while integrating some tribal communities together. The endeavor
spawned field visits and studies of tribes across the country and very few communities
escaped the specter of removal. Mashpee was one such community, however, due to
the tribe’s ‘affinity for the land and their industry and commerce.
There were stores such as Mr. Charles
Collins and the Ockry Trading company
that sold everything from ice cream to bullets and fishing gear Tisit’s and Peters Oil
that provided the town and travelers with fuel. There were restaurants such as TNT’s,
Amelia’s Café, and of course the beloved Flume Restaurant, just to name a few. In
recent times we saw Dick and Ellie’s Clams, and On the Rocks, a night club that
hosted concerts by some of the best bands in the country.
Today we can still see the fruits of early business incubation projects such as Route
151, a cooperative project between the town and state that brought more commerce
through town, and yet we still enjoy the most open space of any Cape town.
The groundwork laid by the many generation of leaders in Mashpee has ushered us
into the modern business era in an environment that welcomes business.
Selectmen John Cahalane, Mary Lou Palumbo, Cedric Cromwell, and Trish Keliinui
Mashpee has enjoyed businesses such as The Hotel Attaquin, a celebrated resort
famous for its fishing and hunting parties, to Walter Mingo’s Coasting Company that
provided water freight to and from New York, to Captain Godrey’s water vessel
production company; The Mashpee
Manufacturing Company which produced
brooms; Pells Best, an oyster company, as
well as Mashpee Trout, a company whose
fish fetched $1 per pound in New York
City when the rest of the industry saw only
25 cents per pound.
What is widely known is that Mashpee
was famous for its cranberries and
companies run by good business leaders
such as Asa Peters. What is little known is

OUR TOWN’S MILESTONES
The History of the Chamber of Commerce
Part of this growing community for the last 30 years is the Mashpee Chamber of
Commerce, an organization devoted to bringing local businesses and the community
together, aiding to the efforts and successes of the entrepreneurial Mashpee
Wampanoag Tribe. Originally named the Mashpee Business Association, the Mashpee
Chamber of Commerce welcomes new businesses, residents, and visitors to our
corner of the Cape. The chamber is nothing, however, without the support of great
local businesses, organizations, encouraging town leaders, residents, and of course our
seasonal and weekend visitors. The Mashpee Chamber of Commerce now has over
300 voluntary members, all represented in our directory at the back of this magazine.
Mashpee Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Mary Lou Palumbo says that
“The Mashpee Chamber is very fortunate. Over the years we’ve really bonded with
the Town, the Tribe, and the business community in Mashpee. These relationships
have contributed to where we are today.”
“I have enjoyed working with the Mashpee Chamber and to see it grow and become
engaged with the community,” adds Tom O’Neill of Tom O’Neill Inc., Immediate Past
President of the Mashpee Chamber of Commerce.
Together, alongside the Town, the Tribe, and all
of our members, we celebrate the milestones
that mark the last 30 years in Mashpee.
An integral part of the growth of the Mashpee
Chamber of Commerce and the Mashpee business
community over the past 30 years is the close
relationship everyone in Mashpee shares. From
business owner to home owner, from town leaders
to weekend visitor, everyone shares a connection to the town and to each other.
This vibrant and progress-focused community is truly unique.
How many towns can say they’re home to a kaleidoscope studio? Celebrating five
years in Mashpee, Cape Kaleidoscope’s owner Suzanne Greene says about her
decision to open a business here, “I love Mashpee’s small town feel, and I think
that’s one of the major reasons people are drawn to shopping in Mashpee, and
in Mashpee Commons in particular. There was really no other place in the upper
Cape that I considered.”
Dovetail Woodworks is also celebrating five years in business, “as a resident of
Mashpee I enjoy working in town because it helps me establish relationships with
neighbors that I might not normally come into contact with,” says Dovetail owner
David Smith, who takes great pride in his work and his neighborhood.

The connectivity expands beyond town borders too. Reporting on towns across
the Cape, The Barnstable Patriot has been in the newspaper business for almost
two centuries. “Mashpee has been an integral part of our advertising reach, to
bring Mashpee residents to Barnstable, and Barnstable residents to Mashpee.
Both towns need each other for commerce and employment as well as cultural
and scenic amenities,” says Barnstable Patriot editor Noah Hoffenberg. And we
agree, wholeheartedly.
For businesses, Mashpee’s location is ideal. As Carol McLeod, principle and creative
director of Carol McLeod Design puts it: Mashpee is “ideally situated close to
Falmouth, yet accessible to the mid-Cape area. And, within 20 minutes, I could be on
either bridge heading to other clients located in Providence, Metro West or Boston
areas.” Besides Mashpee’s prime location, it was the town’s “up-and-coming” appeal
and growing community that led Carol McLeod to open a business here 25 years ago.
Mashpee has grown up so much in the last
30 years, Amy Rice, owner of Woodruff’s Art
Center and the Rice Gallery in Mashpee
Commons, has seen it all first hand: “I have
seen so much development since starting
business here, all very positive. Within
Mashpee Commons, Woodruff’s Art Center
has had 4 different locations, growing and
improving as the Commons has developed.”

Linda Steele, branch manager of Cape Cod Five, also loves her community: “It has
been an honor and a privilege to work in and be a part of the Mashpee community
for these past 20 years. I am so impressed with the town’s leaders, and the supportive
environment in which [we] live.”
Many other businesses in Mashpee are
celebrating anniversaries this year, too, while others are just beginning their ventures
here. From businesses that are centuries old to a store celebrating its hundredth day
open, the range of years in business is a testament to the diversity, growth, and
stability of the town’s community.

SHAPING THE FUTURE
While we celebrate 30 years, several local nonprofit organizations are also
celebrating milestones.
Kiwanis International is celebrating its 100th anniversary
this year, while the Mashpee Kiwanis Club celebrated
their 25th anniversary in January by having a “birthday”
party. In a departure from their past role as a business
club for men, today, Kiwanis is fully dedicated to
children’s needs. Looking forward, Terrie Cook, president of the Mashpee Kiwanis
Club, says she hopes to expand the club’s membership and dedicate more time to
improving the lives of children, from helping to send kids to summer camp to
cleaning up local beaches.
To honor their quarter-century anniversary, The Cape
Cod Children’s Museum kicked off a year-long
celebration with a “Let It Grow!” gala on March 28. The
children’s museum, which has had more than one million
visitors since opening in 1990, was created to encourage
hands-on learning experiences in a safe, educational environment and is filled with
exhibits designed to inspire creativity, curiosity and imagination.

OUR TOWN’S MILESTONES
For the past 25 years, “We have enjoyed the tremendous support of the community
and our valued partnerships with Mashpee schools, businesses, town officials, and the
chamber of commerce,” says Barbara Cotton, Executive Director of Cape Cod
Children’s Museum. The museum serves children and families from across Cape, islands,
and south coast of Massachusetts, with some visitors from as far away as Australia.
This year, the Boys and Girls Club is celebrating two
decades as part of Mashpee’s community.
Even though the nonprofit serves all of Cape Cod, many
kids come from Mashpee for homework help, and daily
tutoring as well as health and fitness programs and help
with honing important life skills. The Boys and Girls Club
is proud of their kids and the work they do, as well as the
vision that donors show by investing in the kids and future of Cape Cod. In the past
twenty years two things have not changed for the Boys and Girls Club in Mashpee:
the focus on helping kids succeed and the role the donors play in it. Without their
generosity, there would be no Boys and Girls Club of Cape Cod.
Growing together
Cedric Cromwell, Chairman, Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe sums up the past, present
and future of Mashpee: “As the signs read on the highway as you enter town
‘Mashpee…Land of the Wampanoag’, Mashpee or traditionally pronounced
Maseepee, is historically a unique Cape Cod town, a town developed and managed
by first citizens, being the Mashpee Wampanoag. From town government officials to
entrepreneurs, from war veterans to spiritual leaders and Traditionalists, Mashpee has
made its mark in cultivating progressive consciousness and welcomed visitors and new
neighbors. I applaud the entire community for it achievements over these past 30
years and as a proud descendant, along with citizens of my Tribal nation, I look
forward to continued and healthy forward progress in the arena of local business,
partnerships and Good Medicine.”
Mashpee is a small town, but we’re
growing, we’re expanding. In the poetic
nature of Robert Byrne, namesake of
Bobby Byrnes Pub, “the universe is
expanding and so should we.”

I am pleased to submit the following milestones for our community from the
past year. Yet, I want to straight away recognize Mary Lou Palumbo, Executive
Director of the Mashpee Chamber of Commerce and the editor of this magazine for
giving me the opportunity and the medium to pay tribute to our wonderful community.
Founding father Benjamin Franklin once wrote that “…without continual growth
and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no
meaning.” Well, Mr. Franklin, I could not agree more. All organizations, regardless
of their focus, should be committed to continuous improvement and our
municipality is dedicated to that very principle.
As a primary example, the lives of our residents will be improved by a variety of
local enhancements emerging this year. We have re-imagined both the Mashpee
Community Park and the John’s Pond Park, giving all our citizens enhanced
opportunities to walk, talk, and gather for community based activities such as
Farmers’ Markets, concerts, and an outdoor film series. In a unique collaboration,
the town has partnered with Mashpee Commons for a MassWorks Grant funding
the infrastructure costs associated with the building of affordable housing units
within the Commons’ complex. As well, construction has begun on Mashpee’s first
Assisted Living Facility while our full-day pre-school program is flourishing, giving
all our youngsters a step up. For our canine friends, we will soon have a local

CELEBRATING our town
As a personal milestone, I have announced my retirement
from the Town after 34 years of service, so this will be my
final report for this publication. I began as a part-time board
secretary and will end as a proud Town Manager for the past
14 years. Over those years, we have maintained stable tax
rates (…dropping nine cents in 2014); the town has not taxed
to the levy limit for the past three years while responsibly
balancing the governmental operating budget; there have
been three positive bond rating changes with the current

rating at the highest rating possible: AAA; we built a new
Mashpee High School, Fire Station 2, the Senior Center, and the Leed Certified
Town Library; we significantly renovated Town Hall and Fire Station One; we
became one of the first towns in the state to be named a “Green Community;”
we reorganized Town Departments for efficiency and effectiveness, promoted a
strong partnership with the Mashpee Chamber of Commerce and the entire
business community, and was a founding member of the Mashpee Kiwanis Club,
which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Furthermore, as I prepare the
Fiscal Year 2016 budget, I will present a balanced financial plan for the future which
will have no effect on the current tax rate while once again deliver services our
residents deserve and become accustomed to. I am
incredibly proud of all the people I have worked with
over my tenure.
For the future, I trust our community has a firm foundation
to continually grow and progress through the coming years.

There’s a place in Mashpee where you can
live, work and play and not have to rely on
transportation to get around. That place is
Mashpee Commons.
“The idea is to provide a community with every
means necessary for a vibrant life in convenient
locations,” says Buff Chace, President and owner of
Mashpee Commons. “Our neighborhood provides
various amenities alongside diverse businesses in a
charming New England village setting.”
Town manager, Joyce Mason agrees. “It’s important for the town to experience
healthy growth and this is one of those projects that will especially help with the
new tax revenue that is generated.” It’s important to promote growth, Mason
believes, but in keeping with the character of the community, which Mashpee
Commons exemplifies.
Inspired by how historic New England towns were built around a town center,
Mashpee Commons has come a long way since it was originally constructed in the
mid-1960s.
“It was originally called the New Seabury Shopping Center to give New Seabury
homeowners a place [to purchase goods and] services. There wasn’t much in
Mashpee at the time,” says John Renz, the property manager for the Commons.

2014 Mashpee Commons Expansion Project Ground Breaking
CELEBRATING MILESTONES
The Town of Mashpee and Mashpee Commons have been working together to
improve the local community for more 20 years, says Chace, sharing the larger
vision of creating a healthy and thriving community. He says, “This is an intergenerational project and we hope that the next phase of development—and those
that follow—add value to the town and bring more visitors to the area.”
New Seabury Shopping Center, 1966
PHOTO: Thomas Mayo
In the mid-1980s, the name was
changed from the New Seabury
Shopping Center to Mashpee
Commons, which is also when the
Commons began to add internal
streets and more buildings, John
Renz remembers. More recent
John Connell, who was hired as the architect for the expansion project, believes
“the live, work, play concept” is how people want to live. An alternative to
the traffic and disconnected neighborhoods associated with suburban sprawl,
Mashpee Commons is based on the smart growth idea. “We are right on the cusp
of going from a shopping center to a town center,” said Connell, and “It’s really
exciting.” In fact, Connell thinks the Mashpee Commons model—in one variation
or another—will be used throughout Massachusetts and New England.
Chace hopes other communities will follow suit, especially with the Cape’s
inevitable population growth. “Based on historic development patterns,” says
Chace, “the hope is that the expansion project at Mashpee Commons will create
economic growth and prosperity for the town.”
The Commons is currently home to a unique mix of
locally owned shops, restaurants, businesses and
apartments, with some national chain stores mixed
in. “Our goal continues to be to provide everything that an energetic community
needs within walking distance in a pedestrian-friendly setting,” says Chace.
The original property included a bank, hardware store, florist shop, two-screen
movie theater, small market, post office and Bobby Byrne’s Pub. “It looked like a
cross between a desert and a sandpit with a strip mall, ” says Bobby Byrne, who
still owns the pub-restaurant, although it looks much different today. According to
Byrne, between the bar and dining room at the expanded restaurant was once the
site of a barbershop, and where the dining room is now used to be an open field.
Byrne credits Buff Chace for Mashpee Common’s successful transformation over
the years.
changes include last summer’s groundbreaking for the MassWorks Market Street
Extension Project. The expansion, Chace says, will include approximately 12,000
square feet of retail space for small businesses and approximately 52 new residential
units as well as public recreational space.

dr. george silva
celebrates 30 yrs.
By Mary Lou Palumbo
When Dr. George Silva arrived more than 30 years ago, Mashpee was a very
different town. The 66-year-old founder of Mashpee Family Medicine took the time
to reflect on how the practice began and what it means to be part of the community.
“It’s amazing how quickly the years go by,” says Dr. Silva. Today Mashpee looks
nothing like it did 30 years ago. The town’s population was 3,000 then, now it is
approximately 15,000. “When I first came to town, I was a typical family doctor,” says
Dr. Silva, whose routine included admitting patients and morning and afternoon
rounds at Falmouth Hospital. Between rounds at the hospital, Dr. Silva would return
to his office in Mashpee. He remembers the summer commute to the hospital was a
40-minute drive one way, eating up precious time. “It wasn’t easy to do that and still
be available,” recalls Dr. Silva. “That was before the days of cell phones when we
used beepers.”
According to Dr. Silva, there were three primary care doctors in Falmouth during the
1980s, all of which closed their practices at the same time. “There was a big to do about
how all of these patients were going to be taken care of,” Dr. Silva says. “So I proposed
to the medical staff in Falmouth that I would take on all of these doctors’ patients.”
However, Dr. Silva had a couple of stipulations. “I was willing to take on all these
patients and do same day-patient care, but I couldn’t do that and have responsibilities
in the hospital and be on call at night.” Not everyone bought into the plan, but for
the most part, the medical staff in Falmouth viewed Dr. Silva’s proposal as a solution
to the problem. That’s when Mashpee Family Medicine first began it’s outpatient/
walk-in model, and it has been growing ever since.
Tedi Marsh is Dr. Silva’s wife and office manager. “It was 1984 when Dr. Silva started
Mashpee Family Medicine, and there wasn’t even a stoplight in town,” she remembers.
Marsh calls her husband, who is one of the senior members of the health care
community on Cape Cod, a pioneer and visionary. “He has excelled,” she says,
“because of his own vision and guidance.”
When Marsh joined Mashpee Family Medicine in 1991, there were seven employees;
now there are 25. “I call us the United Nations of medicine,” says Marsh, “because
we have such a diverse group of people as providers as well as our patient
population. We are very fortunate that way.”
In fact, Dr. Silva says one of the reasons why he came to Mashpee was to
specifically have a relationship with the Wampanoag Tribe. Joan Peters-Gilmartin,
who opened the practice with Dr. Silva and who became one of Mashpee Family
Medicine’s health care providers, is a member of the tribe. And, Marsh says, “Dr.
Silva continues to work on the Tribal Task Force for drug addiction on Cape Cod
and proudly calls many of the Wampanoags friends.”

That was evident at the 30th anniversary party for Mashpee Family Medicine,
which had many tribal members in attendance. “The whole concept wasn’t so
much to celebrate Dr. Silva,” says Marsh, “as it was to thank the community for
growing with us.” The theme of the celebration was “The world is your oyster, the
providers are your pearls,” says Marsh, with the purple in the oysters symbolizing
the connectivity to the local tribe.

“I thought it would be a good idea to thank the town of Mashpee, and the tribe
for their trust all these years,” says Dr. Silva. “We all have to appreciate the fact
that the tribe brings a lot to this town. They’re not just any Native American tribe;
they are the Native American tribe of our Thanksgiving tradition. If there’s an
American story, it’s the Thanksgiving story of the Pilgrims being aided by these
local Native Americans. What an honor it is to be here.”
Dr. Silva and his wife agree that there was a lot to celebrate. Marsh remembers it
rained throughout the day of the party, but just as the event began, a huge
rainbow sprawled out over Mashpee. “I
think we all had our own personal
belief on why that rainbow was there,”
she says. The rainbow certainly
captured the spirit of the day, but for
Dr. Silva what was beyond the rainbow
was at the forefront of his mind. “It was
an opportunity for me to start thinking
about the fact that I’m getting older
and I need to prepare for transition.”

Dr. Silva says his transition to retirement
will take at least two years, since this
isn’t the type of job where you can just
give a two-weeks notice.“ That 30-year
thank-you party for the town made me
realize that the time is coming to plan
for the next part of my life,” says Dr.
Silva, and making sure Mashpee Family

is one of his top priorities.

History of the mashpee
wampanoag
to Mashpee,
“theWelcome
home of our tribe for
approximately 11,000 years.
”
By RAMONA PETERS
Welcome to Mashpee, the home of our tribe for approximately 11,000 years.
Many a storm and visitor has swept through our woods and found comfort on
our beaches both fresh and salt. Our first visitors from across the Atlantic were
the Vikings during the year 1004. They anchored in Waquoit Bay and stayed for
quite a while longer than most folks use their time-share abodes. We’ve seen
many come and go like Verrazano, Cabot, Zunis, Lenape, and other explorers.
We have a history of hospitality one might say. Our culture directs us to be kind,
friendly, and hospitable which allowed the early English settlers to prosper.
The Mashpee Wampanoag are one of the original sixty-nine tribes in the
Wampanoag Nation. The Marshpee (later called Mashpee) tribe was under the
oversight of English missionaries for nearly 200 years. The reservation period in
Mashpee officially began in 1677 and restricted our freedom until 1868. From
that time up until around 1975, the tribe ran the town government of Mashpee.
We became overwhelmed with new residents that very quickly took control of the
direction of the town with an easy five-to-one vote. Today the Native American
population in Mashpee is less than 10%.
and Clan Mothers. The Chief and Medicine Man have permanent seats at the
Tribal Council table to ensure cultural concerns are included in decision-making.
Tribal members seek advice, ceremony, and social justice from these leaders.
The Mashpee Wampanoag Indian Museum is located at 414 Main Street (Route
130) and is open to the public 10-4 Tuesday-Friday and Saturday 10-2 from June
2nd-Dec. 1st, 2015. Come view our exhibits revealing the unique history and
culture of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, including a full size wetu (traditional
lodge) with furnishings, Traditional Leaders exhibit 1926-present, and expo on the
Mashpee Indian whalers of the 19th century. For special educational programs
schedule call (508) 477-9339. The building is accessible. Like us on Facebook.
The Old Indian Meeting House located at 410 Meetinghouse Road is open to
the public for tours 10-2 Monday through Friday May 11th- Dec 1st, 2015. The
Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe uses the Old Indian Meeting House for weddings,
naming ceremonies, occasional sermons, special events, funerals, Thanksgivings

Economically, the tribe has adapted and managed in a number of different ways
besides hunting, fishing, and planting. During the 17th and 18th centuries, we
were involved in the fur, rope, timber, and sassafras trade. In the 19th and early
20th centuries Mashpee Wampanoag men were engaged in the whaling industry,
sailing the Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic and Indian Oceans. Those mariners were usually
out to sea for at least a year at a time hunting whales. The fishing is still great here
in Mashpee. Our rivers, the Mashpee, Santuit, and Quashnet, have been loaded
with herring during the spring months. Smoked herring were exported to Europe
from Mashpee during the 20th century. The cranberry industry and a broom
factory in Mashpee also once provided local employment. Today most Mashpee
Natives are employed in the building and health care industries or working for
the tribe in a variety of professions. Subsistence farming, fishing, and hunting
are still practiced by tribal members. We’ll see you down the bay; try hard not to
leave a footprint.
The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe has both traditional and conventional leadership
for our people. The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe is a federally recognized tribe
(2007), allowing it to actively participate in federal programs designed for Indian
Nations. We maintain a government-to-government relationship with all federal
agencies to support the health, education, and welfare needs of the tribe. Our
traditional leadership includes the Chief and his Circle of advisors, Medicine Man,

and other holidays and for weekly meetings for varying tribal organizations. It is
listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Old Indian Meeting House
attracts worldwide visitors throughout the year. Attendants are on site during the
season, both the restrooms and the Meeting House are accessible.
The Mashpee One Room Schoolhouse was built in South Mashpee in 1831. It has
been moved and restored to the way it might have looked in 1850.
You can visit the historic schoolhouse, the Wampanoag Indian Museum and the
Mashpee Archives all in the area of the Mashpee Community Park located at the
intersection of Great Neck Road North and Route 130.
Learn about Mashpee’s unique early history and experience what a one room
school day might have been like in 1850. Discover how and why it was moved twice.
Sit at the recreated desks where they sat and worked on a “ciphering” lesson under
the stern gaze of the “schoolmaster.”
We are open June through October on Thursdays from 10am to 2pm or other
days by appointment. One hour tours are free, but donations are gratefully
accepted. You can arrange a small group or individual visit by contacting the
Schoolmaster, Frank Lord, at fjlord@msn.com or 508-539-3378.

Dino’s Pizza and Sports Bar is celebrating its
25th anniversary this year. Dino’s has been a member
of the Mashpee Chamber of Commerce (formerly the
Mashpee Business Association) since opening in 1990.
great food and
outstanding
selection
Everyone in the area knows the Pizza and Sports Bar by
its namesake, Dino. You don’t have to be from Mashpee
to know him, either, because you’ve heard him on the
radio inviting you to come watch the game at his Sports
Bar on Route 151 in Mashpee for years.
Constantinos “Dino” Mitrokostas is a first generation
American with Greek parents, and has been a Cape
Codder since 1970. He graduated from DennisYarmouth High in 1978 and is a graduate of Bentley
University Class of 1982 with a Bachelor’s of Science
Degree in International Business/International Finance.
After graduating from Bentley, Dino returned to work
side-by-side with his family in the restaurant business.
In 1987, Dino opened and operated two pizza-themed
restaurants: New England Pizza in Chatham and
Pizza 1 & Subs 2 in Marston Mills. In 1989, he sold
the restaurants and went on to design, develop, and
construct John’s Pond Center in Mashpee. Dino opened
Dino’s Pizza in 1990, and has been a landmark in the
community for 25 years. Dino’s Sports Bar is the top
KENO spot on Cape Cod.
SCORE is the nation’s
largest volunteer
business counseling
service that is
dedicated to the
formation, growth and
success of America’s
small businesses. The
awards are a way
to show-case the
accomplishments of
small business owners
and to give them
some well deserved
exposure.
Dino currently lives in Mashpee, the father of
three children. He actively participates in the Greek Festival and is a member
of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Centerville. Over the years, Dino has
contributed to the community. He is a supporter of all Mashpee School based clubs,
organizations, and teams as well as a support of all Mashpee Town events. Dino
has been a supporter of every major event held by the Chamber of Commerce. He
has been the longest continuous supporter of the Mashpee Wampanoag Ball and
a supporter of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal events. In 1997, Dino founded the
Dino’s Children’s Charity fund, whose primary goal is to provide Christmas presents for
the needy and underprivileged children and families in the Mashpee/Falmouth area.
Dino has been the recipient of the Mashpee Chamber of Commerce’s Citizen of
the Year and Mashpee’s Humanitarian Award. Over the years, Dino has received
many accolades including awards for the Best Prize, Best Wings, and best
Sports Bar to name just a few.

When we think of fashion we might first think
Milan or Paris. Mashpee is far from the first place
that pops into our minds. When we think of
manufacturing, a slew of developing nations are
the first to roll off our tongues. Take a look at the
tag on your shirt. Where was it made? Malaysia,
China, Pakistan?
Kathryn Hilderbrand, founder of Good Clothing
Company, is bringing manufacturing back home, to Mashpee. Bringing
manufacturing home has really good side effects. Ask Kathryn and she’ll tell you
first and foremost, Good Clothing Company is bringing jobs back to the United
States, and paying liveable wages. Now employing eight seamstresses and

There’s a lot more good, too. Bakers have long valued the “small batch” method.
This quality over quantity approach to creative work applies to manufacturing at
Good Clothing Company just as strong as any other industry. Typically, a designer
has to commit to 500 or more pieces of a single garment just to see it come to
life. That’s 500 pieces of clothing made and stored that need to be sold. At Good
Clothing Company, one piece can be created with designer and manufacturer
working close together on the project. No warehouse needed. No wasted energy
or materials on the other 499 shirts the designer had to pay to create.
The small batch approach also means
that new and young designers, who
typically could not afford to have their
designs manufactured in the United
States, can now work with experienced
seamstresses and manufacturers at
Good Clothing Company to launch
their designs, lines, and careers. This is
huge news in the fashion world, putting

since 1997. It works in partnership
with National Development, a
respected real estate and investment
firm with senior housing expertise.
Bridges® by EPOCH at Mashpee will
open in the summer of 2015.
Enhancing the quality of life for seniors
and peace of mind for their families has
been a commitment of EPOCH Senior
Living from the start. Our philosophy includes providing seniors a secure,
welcoming home with personalized care and support. This extends across all our
communities and programs, including Bridges by EPOCH, which is a community
for people with memory impairment. Ultimately, our success is driven by the
quality of our team, from maintenance and dining to the care giving staff.
We believe Mashpee is an ideal location for the award-winning Bridges by
EPOCH because we recognize the need for memory care in this region, and
we know Mashpee, with its rich history and sense of community, will be the
perfect backdrop for our residents. The combination of natural beauty and area
attractions, from the library to the museums and beaches, will provide enjoyment
for our residents and their families.
Bridges by EPOCH at Mashpee is a secure and state-of-the-art community
purposefully designed with soothing lighting, decor and colors, tall ceilings, wide
spaces and plenty of windows for natural light, as well as beautiful, enclosed
sensory gardens for our residents to enjoy outside. The community, which is a
one-story structure, will feature 54 apartments nestled within three “households”
and designed in traditional Cape Cod style. We’re also proud to preserve more
than 19 acres of wooded areas surrounding the community.
The Town of Mashpee and local businesses have been very welcoming through
the entire development process. We are grateful for the support, and we look
forward to continuing to build relationships with the businesses and residents
of Mashpee through jobs, partnerships, and community involvement. We
also thank the Mashpee Chamber of Commerce for its support of our efforts.
We are excited to bring Bridges by EPOCH’s exceptional dementia care to a
town that offers so much to so many people. We know that our residents and
their families will have everything they need for a culturally stimulating
lifestyle right here in Mashpee.

A NATIONAL MODEL FOR
LIFESTYLE LIVING
By Ron Bonvie
As we near the sell-out of Southport, I am proud of
the strong relationship I have enjoyed working with
the Town of Mashpee and the Mashpee Chamber of
Commerce over the last 16 years. While the financial
benefits to the Town are evident by contributing to the tax base with 750 new
homes without adding one more child to the school system because it is a 55 and
over community, an equally important contribution to the Town is the many ways
Southport homeowners volunteer at the Senior Center, on fund-raising drives and
through the annual scholarships given to deserving seniors by fund-raisers held
at Southport by the homeowners. It is a “win-win” for the Southport homeowners
and the Town.
designer model homes and clubhouse are open
daily from 9 am to 5 pm. The new homes are
priced from the high $300s to the mid $500s. For
more information, please call 800-840-7775 or visit
the Southport website at www.southportcc.com.
Ron Bonvie of Bonvie Homes is the national
award-winning developer and builder of Southport
on Cape Cod. A long-time resident of Mashpee,
Ron has built over 2,000 homes in Massachusetts
during the last 43 years. For more information,
visit his website, www.bonvieliving.com
Ron Bonvie
The “milestone” Southport has attained is becoming a national model for other
developers and towns around the United States. Through my appointments on
several committees with the National Association of Home Builders, I learn first
hand what other communities are doing around America to provide lifestyle
communities for adults who are nearing retirement or are already retired.
In my opinion, the lifestyle at Southport is second to none, in terms of the array
of on-site amenities the community offers, from tennis and the nine-hole golf
course (with no membership or greens fees) to the 32,000 square foot clubhouse
with indoor and outdoor heated pools, fitness center and ballroom and 24hour security at the main entrance. Equally important is the camaraderie and
socialization that the homeowners create and foster which is hard to imagine but
easy to see once you visit the community.
In recent years, we have attracted the interest of New England media legends,
Dan Rea of WBZ Radio and Susan Wornick, formerly a news anchor at WCVBTV and a resident of Mashpee. Dan and Susan have embraced the vision I have
had for Southport from day one and now they speak passionately about the
community, having met many of the homeowners and having seen our model
homes and amenities firsthand.
Completing Southport is somewhat bittersweet because I have enjoyed working
with the Town officials and helping to support many local trades and suppliers
over the years. Knowing that I have built a community and created a lifestyle that
homeowners can enjoy for years to come certainly provides a sense of satisfaction
that inspires me to create other such communities in the coming years.
I have saved some of the very best locations in the community until this last phase
and I invite people 55 and over to visit us at any time. Our national award-winning

Money savinG facts about
Car Insurance
Car Insurance Lower NOW than in the 1980s
April 1, 2008, was a revolutionary day for the
Massachusetts car insurance industry. Previously,
there was no competitive car insurance in the Bay State.
What does this mean? Pricing was heavily regulated
by the Massachusetts Division of Insurance; the cost
of insurance was the same no matter who you bought
from. The cost would vary based on where you lived and
the amount of coverage you purchased. More coverage
would equal more cost, but depending where you lived,
you could get a break. Each town in Massachusetts has
a rating; Cape Cod towns have relatively low ratings
compared to drivers in more heavily trafficked areas, like Boston, where there are
more accidents and car thefts. If you live on Cape Cod, your insurance will be less
than if you live in Boston, with coverages staying the same.
The first five years (2008–2013) was a slow “deregulation.” No major price
differences; rates were submitted to the Division of Insurance for approval and
they couldn’t vary much from company to company. In 2013, insurance companies
made more changes to their pricing structure, lowering the overall cost and offering
more credits and discounts. More direct writer insurance companies like GEICO,
Progressive and AllState came to Massachusetts because of deregulation. The state
has more than 30 car insurance companies doing business here, with a mix of local
insurance agents, banks and direct writers selling insurance.
Helping clients reduce risk,
protect assets, & plan for the future.
Bringing competitive car insurance to Massachusetts was good for local insurance
agents as they were able to work with more insurance companies, offering clients a
greater variety of options. Many companies began offering a credit if you had your
car insurance with the same company or agency as your homeowner insurance.
Don’t own a home? No problem. Package your car insurance with a renter policy to
protect your belongings and save on your car insurance.

Agencies are better able to differentiate themselves by becoming your trusted
insurance advisor; similar to a CPA, lawyer or banker. Your trusted insurance advisor
will ensure you have the proper insurance suited to your needs: home, auto,
business, life, health, disability, etc.
Fun Facts
• Car insurance rates were the same with every insurance company before 4/1/2008
• Home & property rates increased on Cape Cod and other coastal communities;
car insurance rates are less today than 30 years ago
• Massachusetts’ claim to fame was the most expensive car insurance in the country.
Now, it’s less than many other states

For Visitors, Mashpee is the premier shopping and dining destination on
Cape Cod. With shopping plazas of varying sizes tucked in all around
town, Mashpee boasts a variety of small shops, boutiques, fine dining
establishments, family-fun venues, and pedestrian-friendly spaces for a
pleasant day out.

We are still pinching ourselves over the
welcome but unexpected outpouring
of support and funds given to us during
last summer’s ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. If you participated and named us as your
charity of choice, thank you! Please know that your donation is directly benefitting
patients and their families in our community.
Our organization supports those living with Lou Gehrig’s Disease emotionally and
financially through our in-house patient programs. We routinely assist with mortgage
payments, heating bills, home and vehicle modifications, college scholarships,
respite care and vacations among many other grants.
How do we help so many patients? When it’s not falling from the sky in buckets
of ice, where does the money come from? We plan and execute a number of
fundraisers throughout the year.
This past winter, about a week before the snow really started falling, we had a first
time event that my staff and I had wanted to try for years. A beach party in the winter!
And party we did! Over 150 people dressed up in their best beach attire braved the
elements, headed to Dino’s Sports Bar, and enjoyed live music and dancing with
the Baha Brothers, Cape Cod’s favorite summertime party band! We crowned Dino
Mitrokostas the “Big Kahuna” as he was our major event sponsor and donated the
food, venue and entertainment!
Although we are so grateful that winter is finally over, we are eagerly looking
forward to holding our 2nd Annual “Life’s A Beach” party at Dino’s on Saturday,
January 30, 2016!
We are very grateful for the support and friendship of the small businesses in and
around town that make this event a success. Thank you to our 2015 Winter Beach

Mashpee shares the same natural beauty as the rest of Cape Cod. With salt water
and fresh water beaches, visitors and residents alike will enjoy the unaltered beauty
of Mashpee’s water-fronts. On a rainy day, there are museums, art centers and
galleries, and indoor activities suitable for people of all ages and with all interests.
For residents, Mashpee is growing into the little town of dreams. The High School is
home to new and exciting technologies that stimulate the creativity and learning of
the next generation. The chamber is proud to support those very students in their
continued education. Green initiatives keep Mashpee at the forefront of global
altruism. And groups such as Heroes in Transition, Inc, and L.I.F.E., Inc, work to place
military service members and adults with unique learning challenges to work in and
with their community. These examples just scratch the surface of the benefits of
residing in Mashpee.
For business owners, Mashpee is becoming a clear choice. The growth of the
Mashpee Commons is making way for new businesses and new business types.
South Cape Village is under new management, allowing for new and exciting changes
in the near future. Mashpee is also a great home base for larger businesses, and is
welcoming new industries, like clothing manufacturing, into the already diverse mix of
unique businesses. With the support of the network we are working to establish and
maintain at the Chamber of Commerce, Mashpee will continue to grow as a healthy
business community with a close connection to our municipalities, or residents, and
our new and returning visitors.
Finally, the Mashpee Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Mashpee are working
to provide a greater range of access for individuals with accessibility needs, in order
for easier planning and greater comfort. Inside this year’s guidebook, we have marked
all appropriate businesses with icons to signify accessibility. Not all businesses are
accessible yet, and not all businesses are places where clients visit. Our accuracy and
accessibility will continue to expand and grow as we progress in providing this
information. If there is any question about accessibility, we recommend a phone call
or email to the business in question for details on their accessibly.
Whether you’re stopping by for a day out shopping, looking for the perfect
elementary school, opening a new restaurant, or interested in art and history,
Mashpee is a beautiful Cape town with something for everyone.
