Just an hour and a half from Duluth on Highway 61, you’ll enter Cook County, where seven scenic wonders await you. Come see why this place has earned raves from the likes of Outside Magazine, Budget Travel Magazine, and National Geographic. Cook County includes the communities of Schroeder, Tofte, Lutsen, Grand Marais, the Gunflint Trail and Grand Portage. This summer, get away (without having to drive very far). Play tourist. Explore Cook County and soak up some of the North Shore’s most spectacular sights and experiences. 16 │GREAT SUMMER GETAWAY Sawtooth Mountain Range Jagged and ancient, with a distinctive serrated profile, the Sawtooth Mountain Range rims the Lake Superior shore. The Superior Hiking Trail traverses several of its summits. The range includes the four peaks of Lutsen Mountains – in winter, the Midwest’s largest ski area – and serves as a craggy playground with hiking, mountain biking, and vistas guaranteed to make you stop and say “Wow.” In the summer, Lutsen Mountains offers family-friendly thrills with the Alpine Slide and scenic rides on the Mountain Tram. Another family favorite in the area: biking along the gentle, paved Gitchi-Gami State Trail that parallels the Lake Superior shore. Northern Lights With so much wilderness and so few sources of light pollution, Cook County is a photographer favorite for capturing the aurora borealis, or northern lights. Caused by geomagnetic storms, northern lights are a bucket-list favorite. There's nothing like watching shimmering electric ribbons snake across the sky to give you perspective on what’s really important. Also, what better way to celebrate your engagement, wedding, honeymoon, babymoon or anniversary than with a romantic quest to see the northern lights? During your visit, ask your lodging host about the aurora forecast. There are also a variety of aurora-forecast and alert services available for your smartphone. Even if you don't luck out and see the lights, the sky here is so pure that on clear nights you can see the spiral arm of the Milky Way Galaxy. Moose (and Other Wild Things) “Where can we go to see a moose?” This is one of the most frequent questions asked at the visitor centers in Cook County. Moose are a Minnesota icon and an awe-inspiring sight, weighing up to 900 pounds. The best place to see a moose, if you’re lucky? The Gunflint Trail. (Which, FYI, is actually a two-lane paved road.) Starting in Grand Marais on the Lake Superior shore, drive inland on the Gunflint Trail National Scenic Byway with your eyes peeled and your camera ready. Dawn and dusk are the best times for moose-spotting. Other wild things you might see in Up The Shore Cook County: lynx, fox, black bear, timberwolf, flying squirrel, otter (awww), and over 155 species of birds. The Audubon Society named the Superior National Forest one of the world’s “Globally Important Bird Areas.” High Falls Why is High Falls sometimes called “Minnesota’s Niagara”? Imagine a canyon with a river surging through it. Sheer basalt walls fringed with forest. A waterfall stretched from wall to wall, like a dam. A deafening torrent freight-trains over the edge. At the base of the falls, sun glimmers in the spray and arcs up a rainbow. At 120 feet, High Falls is the tallest waterfall in the state. It is located at the top of the North Shore in Grand Portage State Park, a scenic 45-minute drive from Grand Marais. Families love High Falls because the walk to the viewing area is short enough for kids. In summer, a wooden boardwalk makes High Falls wheelchair- and stroller-accessible. Marais Art Colony and North House Folk School. Check out a cool event. Festivals, events and live music take place throughout the summer throughout the county. Check the event calendar at visitcookcounty.com/calendar Scenic Gateway to the Boundary Waters Grand Marais Quirky. Artsy. Historic. Beautiful. However you describe it, the harbor village of Grand Marais certainly deserves the title of “America’s Coolest Small Town,” which it was recently awarded by Budget Travel Magazine after winning a national poll. Along with breathtaking natural beauty, Grand Marais and the larger Cook County area are widely known for arts, history and culture. Explore art galleries, museums and distinctive shops. Take a class at the nationally renowned Grand The Boundary Waters. A pristine wilderness of glacier-born lakes and vibrant forests. No sirens, no honking, just birdsong and the savory crackle of your campfire. National Geographic named the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) one of the world’s “50 Places of a Lifetime.” Whether you paddle for an afternoon or a week, the Cook County experience isn’t complete until you’ve been here. Make the drive part of the journey by taking the scenic route to the Boundary Waters. Take Highway 61 north, following the Lake Superior shoreline. Access the Boundary Waters from the town of Tofte, or continue to the harbor village of Grand Marais, then turn inland on the Gunflint Trail. The Gunflint Trail is a 57-mile paved road that winds through a ruggedly beautiful landscape and ends on the shore of Lake Saganaga, on the edge of the Boundary Waters. Not an outdoor person? One of the friendly local businesses can set you up for an easy paddle – or outfit you for an overnight adventure. Other Gunflint Trail adventures include hiking into the past at Chik-Wauk Museum & Nature Center and flying through the treetops with the Towering Pines Canopy Tour. Uncrowded State Parks Did you know that Grand Portage State Park – home of “Minnesota’s Niagara” – gets only 1/16th as many visitors as Gooseberry Falls? Cook County has four spectacular and uncrowded state parks, all easily accessible no matter where you’re staying. (We mentioned Grand Portage State Park earlier.) Cascade River State Park features a breathtaking series of cascading waterfalls. Ample parking and a walking path make this park easy to explore. In Temperance River State Park you’ll peer into a deep, narrow river gorge with 10-15 short drops. A short hiking trail loop will bring you around the falls. If you’re up for a heftier hike, head to Judge C.R. Magney State Park and go see Devil’s Kettle Falls, which flows into a mysterious (bottomless?) hole in the rock.
