2015-­‐2016 Academic Year Communications Internships If you have completed at least your sophomore year by May 2015 at Indiana University-­‐
Bloomington, and want an opportunity to: • Increase your communications skills • Establish contacts, • Gain experience, and • Serve the local community, then, you are invited to apply for a communication internship at either LIFEDesigns or Monroe County United Ministries (see descriptions on the next pages) for the 2015-­‐2016 academic year. These two Internships are sponsored by the Bloomington Press Club in cooperation with the United Way of Monroe County. The stipend for the internship is $1,000 for which 150 hours of work are required during the next academic year. The work schedule will be arranged by the student and the agency. The candidates selected will be assigned a mentor to serve as adviser and liaison among the agency, the Press Club and the students. The mentor will hold an initial meeting with the students and the agency representatives where the work schedule/working relationship will be established by late August 2015. The mentor and the students will maintain contact as warranted throughout the internship. At the end of the internship, the students will submit a final written report on the internship experience to the Press Club. They will also be asked to attend a Press Club meeting at the end of April 2016 to describe briefly the internship to the members. Position descriptions are attached. After reviewing applications and interviewing finalists
in person in mid-April, the Press Club Internship Committee will select the interns.

Goals of the internship: • Increased public awareness of the Direct Support Professional’s role • Increased public awareness of LIFEDesigns branding through authentic stories • Increased public participation of LIFEDesigns fundraising and community events Specific responsibilities of the Intern: • Development and publication of print and e-­‐newsletters • Social Media content management • Content development for press releases and PSAs • Development of a comprehensive communications strategy for: ü A marketing campaign themed around authentic content and testimonial stories ü The Week of Chocolate fundraising events ü LIFEDesigns Capital Campaign ü Recruitment Campaign Desired Skills and Strengths: A successful candidate for this role will demonstrate excellent writing skills, planning and organizational skills, and show creativity. A successful candidate will possess an energetic, a strategic mindset, detail oriented, and motivated personality. Practical experience: Experience with and access to the Adobe Suite is a must. Additional programs used will include Constant Contact, Microsoft Office, Gmail, Hootsuite, and various social media platforms. Supervisor: This role would report directly to the Community Development Officer Stephanie Shelton, and work in concert with the Content Strategy Intern. The intern would meet regularly with the Stephanie to discuss current projects and coordination of efforts. The intern would be able to complete a portion of this role from a satellite location or by telecommuting. LIFEDesigns’ Need: LIFEDesigns is currently in desperate need to hire 40+ new Direct Support Professionals. In order to do this we really must succeed at increasing public awareness and opinion of the role. A comprehensive recruitment and public awareness campaign are needed immediately. LIFEDesigns also hosts one of the largest fundraising festivals Bloomington has to offer, and has a great need to increase the funds raised by the series of events known as The Week of Chocolate. This additional position would allow us to focus on overall strategic development of a major gifts and fundraising program. Monroe County United Ministries Monroe County United Ministries (MCUM) serves low-­‐income residents of Monroe County through two programs: childcare and emergency services. We provide affordable, high-­‐
quality childcare for children ages 2-­‐6 and financial, food, and emergency assistance for households facing a crisis. MCUM cannot provide its programs without support from the community. The goal of this position is to improve MCUM’s visibility in the community, increase awareness of MCUM’s brand and services, enhance communications with current donors and supporters, and reach new audiences through innovative marketing strategies. Responsibilities include: • Write and produce the agency’s newly renovated print newsletter and eNewsletter. • Interview MCUM clients and community members for newsletter articles on a monthly basis. • Develop media relationships in the community and learn how to write and disperse a compelling press release that receives media coverage. • Secure media partners and sponsorships for special events, including television, radio, and newspaper coverage. • Design and enhance printed materials, such as fliers and direct mail letters for fundraising campaigns and special events. • Create and implement plan to maximize the impact of our social media. The Communications Assistant will be directly supervised by Development Associate Megan Reece, who will meet on a weekly basis to discuss each week’s priority tasks and provide support and guidance in achieving the position’s goals. The Communications Assistant is a welcome addition to our staff and will be included in discussions that pertain to their projects and various staff meetings and activities, such as trainings and lunches. MCUM is dedicated to giving students an in-­‐depth learning experience. Working with our development team on a broad array of projects will provide this individual with skills and experience transferable to any organization. To help enhance her/his education, the Communications Assistant is invited to spend a portion of her/his time garnering relationships with members of the media and learning from their expertise. MCUM’s administrative office is open Monday-­‐Friday, 8 a.m.-­‐ 4 p.m., and scheduling is flexible within those parameters. We are located on the near west side of Bloomington next to Tri-­‐North Middle School.
