Everyone was issued with a ration book, an ID card and a tag, before heading off for their activities. Maxwell, where each group tried to make a barrage balloon. With lots of bags, tape and huge air machines, we tried to get the balloons floating. There was mixed success, as groups had to work quickly together to get the balloons ready! Throughout the day they baked, either in the Food Tech lab or by being ‘evacuated’ to Edgarley Manor, using their ration books to work out how much (or how little) ingredients they’d be able to use to make their delicious carrot buns and cookies. Well done to 6DEH for making the best one, although all groups managed to get airborne. They also took part in some Enigma code breaking, and produced propaganda posters and paper hats ready for the VE Day lunch. The lunch was superbly cooked and laid out, with some typical VE Day dishes, included soup, potato pie, sandwiches, jelly and cake. Although delicious, I’m sure many realised how lucky we are to have the normal food at school! Undoubtedly one of the highlights was the artwork inspired by Mr Page 2 Overall, everyone in Year 6 had a fun filled and educational day. Thanks go to all the children for embracing the day, and those staff who gave considerable extra time to make the day a lot of fun. ‘I liked the cookery and I learnt how to make something nice from the rationed ingredients.’ Christian W ‘We really enjoyed making the hats, posters and especially the barrage balloons in the pavilion!’ 6AGD As spring is starting to embrace Somerset with her golden arms, the EAL department took the opportunity to go somewhere with both outdoor and indoor entertainment areas. Tuesday saw us entering the internationally acclaimed Wookey Hole Caves. Fun was had by all. We saw witches (or rocks which look a bit like witches if you squint really hard and look out of the corner of your eye), clambered over dinosaurs, cavemen, mammoths and giant gorillas (historical accuracies giving way to fun, as per usual). We learnt how paper is made, or at least used to be made out of cotton, until people started chopping down trees, which now make up 90% of all materials used in paper. That said, cotton is actually one of the ‘dirtiest’ crops to produce due to the amount of pesticides used. (Buy organic cotton!) Fortunately many of our lessons at Millfield Prep are moving onto iPads: equally educational, more interactive and much better for the trees! But, as per usual, I digress. Within the Wookey Hole Caves extravaganza, there were pirate cannons, a mirror maze and a penny arcade to amuse everyone, as well as an amazing indoor play-area and a new 4D cinema. The museum commented once again on how well-behaved all of our pupils were. Well done to this year’s EAL group for flying the flag of good manners and excellent behaviour! Anton’s product is an amazing pair of shoes, with built-in GPS, Wi-Fi and self-tying laces. Perfect for the businessperson and casual wearers alike. I wonder, if I rigged it so that Anton won the Junior Apprentice competition, would he have a pair of these shoes custom built for me? I’m giddy with power! Mr Seal HOME Millfield Prep Newsletter ● Issue 565 ● 19 March 2015 Mr Greg Searle’s Assembly We were honoured to welcome current parent, Mr Searle, to our Assembly on Monday. He gave an inspiring talk that hinged on the theme of trust and showed that ordinary people can do extraordinary things, especially as part of a team. Team work is crucial at Millfield Prep and in all sorts of life situations. Mr Searle urged us to trust those around us and to believe in our coaches; the team is bigger than the individual. Mr Searle gave a self deprecating and Page 3 honest account of his own sporting career, which culminated in coming out of retirement to compete in the London 2012 Olympic Games and achieving a medal at the age of 38. He held his audience of staff and pupils in rapt attention from start to finish and we extend our grateful thanks to him. Some points to consider… Ask yourself “If not now, when?”, “If not me, who?”. You are the face in the mirror and you have to look at yourself. Trust yourself. Trust your team. Trust your coach. The Ancient Greeks Performances of the Junior production 'The Ancient Greeks' will be on Tuesday 24 March at 6.30pm in the Recital Hall (wine, soft drinks and crisps when you arrive) and Wednesday 25 March at 2pm (coffee and cake afterwards). Pupils may go home with their parents following the show which will last about 30 minutes. In past years it has been a serious squeeze to fit our huge audience into the Recital Hall safely for the evening show, so if you are able to come to the Wednesday matinee instead, I would be eternally grateful. Pre-Prep children should not come to this performance as it is during school time and Year 1 and Year 2 pupils will have watched our dress rehearsal. To see a trailer of ‘The Ancient Greeks’ click on the icon Boarders’ Art Competition The final pieces - which can be in any medium - will be displayed in the boarding houses, and the winners will receive prizes in the form of vouchers. There is no theme...it can be in any form and of anything! Mrs Shayler and Mr Maxwell will be the judges. Good luck! Informal Concert We hosted another enjoyable Informal Concert last Friday, which began with the Flute Group and ended with Yuka M’s rousing rendition of ‘Jack in a Juke Box’ for the piano. ‘Ancient Greeks’ Programme Design Winner Kizzi R is the proud winner of the 'Ancient Greeks' programme cover design competition, which all juniors took part in during their art lessons. Kizzi's picture features the Trojan Horse which is one of the short plays that will be performed in our Ancient Greek production next week. Runners up from each age group were: Nathaniel S - Year 3, Tara L Year 4 and Stella G - Year 5. Their artwork, along with other highly commended pieces will be on show in the music foyer all of next week. Many performed for their first time – including Ralph Butt on the guitar and Ruby L on cello. Audience members danced to the groove of two drum kit pieces by Ignacio R, while Jacob P’s aria soothed the spectators in impeccable Italian. HOME Millfield Prep Newsletter ● Issue 565 ● 19 March 2015 Page 6 Junior Kit Car South African Exchange - Farewell... The dedicated band of kit car enthusiasts tested their “Green Power Goblin” electric kit car this week. It has been under construction since September and has proceeded smoothly to the testing stage. The biggest problem so far has been getting it through the doorways. Testing could not have gone better; the handling is good with quite a tight turning circle; acceleration is better than its big brother the Year 8 kit car, and there were no unwanted noises coming from the moving parts! The race for this class of kit car is late in the Summer Term, so the car needs to be finished with the addition of bodywork and checking of the race regulations to make sure the car will pass scrutiny on race day. South African exchange students Bryce S and Adam R have been staying with us at Millfield Prep since the beginning of February and are sadly departing this week. Above: Boris F, Barney F and Alex M preparing the car for testing. Boarder of the Week They have been staying with hosts Mac Ryder, Spencer Findlay, Finlay A and Tom M from Year 7, who have really enjoyed having them over to stay. Our boys will be going over to South Africa in the summer to complete the return leg of the exchange. If there are any boys in the current Year 6 who would be interested in this fantastic opportunity, please look out for the information which will be available in September. Goes to Javier C for giving up his own free time, and time that he could have been with his family, to help out with the Year 7 production and rehearsals. He has chosen to have a Panini bar this Friday evening. Above: Alex M taking the first test run My Boarding Weekend Last Friday saw all of the girls in Hollies take part in Red Nose Day at school to raise money for Comic Relief. In the evening we watched some of the Comic Relief television programme to see the types of projects that the money raised would go to. Some of it was sad to watch, but it was important to see and helped us all to understand the story behind the fun of the red noses. By Caragh N, Year 7 The weekend started with a fancy dress disco, but it wasn't just any disco, it was a roller skating one! I have only roller skated once in my life and that was when I was really young. I started off with a few slips but soon found my feet and then was whizzing around. On Sunday there was incredible fun, with bouncy courses on land and water. First Eleanor and I were sitting on a bar trying to bash each other off. Then we had a race around a bouncy obstacle course, Eleanor won that by far. There were many more fun things to do, but I loved the bouncy course in water the best! Boarding Life What a great time the boarders had last weekend... A high energy inflatable fun session and a roller disco provided many memorable moments! In the group stage we defeated; The Downs, Monmouth, Halliford and Bedford Prep to win our group. This meant that we progressed to the quarter-final where we beat Colet Court by 19 points to 14. In the semi-final we beat Taunton Prep by 21 points to 10. The final was against a strong team from Moulsford Prep and we won that match 17 points to 7 to retain the title. The boys all played incredibly well to retain this most prestigious of tournaments. The U11s won their group beating Blundell’s and Llandaff. In the quarter-final they beat Westbourne House but unfortunately lost to Moulsford Prep in the semi-final. Again the U11 boys played very well to progress so far in this challenging tournament. GIRLS’ FOOTBALL The U13 girls' football team travelled to Port Regis on Wednesday for their annual 7-a-side tournament. The girls played in a group of 6 teams, on small pitches, and did really well to win 3 games and draw 2. They topped the group on points and went on to play the winner of the other group who were from Gillingham. After 10 minutes the deadlock couldn't be broken so the match went to penalties. After a super save from Rebecca K the score was 1-1 and it was onto sudden death. Gillingham missed their penalty and it was down to the cool head of Elodie J to slot the winning penalty home. A superb afternoon's football which the girls enjoyed and improved in every match that they played. They were well led by captain Ollie Hayes who proudly went up and collected the trophy. He narrowly missed out on a bronze medal, however; as his coach, I witnessed something quite special during his last contest. His tactics against a seasoned fighter were outstanding. He's one to watch for the future! Max, has come such a long way on his short judo journey. He was clearly the novice in his talented group, however; this didn't stop him putting in a brave and accomplished performance. He was awarded a well deserved bronze medal. On a personal note, I am honoured to be their coach. Millfield are blessed with having sportsmen, advanced for their years. It was a great opportunity for them to learn about tournament play and they were supposed to just gain some valuable experience. When the team left the hotel on Saturday morning disaster struck; the coach broke down! We were stranded on the seafront with all our bags and food. After a manic 30 mins of phoning taxi/minibus companies and lots of parents we set off again. We arrived eight minutes before (not the usual 60) the tournament started. The girls were obviously stressed (and so was I!) but they played well and narrowly lost to the eventual group winners, Feltonfleet 4-3. The day progressed and the girls improved with all 11 girls contributing to the day. Unfortunately, the bad start was our undoing; they drew one match, lost three (all by 1 goal) and won four. We had previously beaten both finalists and although this is heartbreaking, the girls can still have the confidence that they are an excellent team. I have loved coaching these very talented girls this year and wish them all the success for next term. A BIG, BIG thank you to all our parents who rallied around and helped transport us and supported the girls throughout the day. Mrs Collins U12A With very few teams entered into this competition, we knew the standard would be high. Millfield Prep had to win all their group games to progress to the semi-finals. U13A Team The girls played outstanding netball in the group games, beating Downsend 5-3, Wellingborough 8-4, Felsted 9-4, Cranleigh 6-3 and Port Regis 7-1. In the semi-finals the girls played Highfield. After watching the girls play with enthusiasm, commitment and fantastic team spirit, I knew the team would win and so they did. We only had one more match to win the National Finals. The girls worked extremely hard throughout the match against Twyford but sadly, after a few discrepancies, the girls lost 5-4 in golden goal. I really could not of asked for more dedication and determination on the day. The u12A team displayed a very high standard of netball and I have enjoyed every minute of the girls company and humour all season. Well done to: Jasmine N, Lily D, Jasmine C, Loveday B, Georgia D, Harry D, Maria E, Polly P, Maddi B and Lucy R. An enormous thank you for all the U12A parents who supported and helped the children and myself all term. Mrs Morgan-Hughes U11A This would have to be the most memorable netball nationals to date! With the coach breaking down and the amazing help from Mr 'Hero' Hazell and many other parents and taxis. However, apparently the best taxi of all (according to Tottie, Ruby and Caitlin) was that of our very own Headmistress, Mrs Shayler! U12A Team Needless to say, the whole debacle of making the first game on time appeared to not phase the U11 girls one bit, professionals through and through obviously! We started of playing Leeds Grammar, a recognised strong netball school. The girls went 1-0 down initially and I thought our day was clearly going to be doomed, but the girls had other ideas and amazingly came back to win 2-1. They then beat Hurst 6-4, St George's 8-6, Farleigh 4-3, Orwell 4-3 and then had a blip in concentration losing to Glendower 4-0. This meant the pressure was on and the girls were aware they had to win their last group game to make the quarter finals. Pressure, it seems, is what these girls thrive on and they made hasty work of winning against Russell House 4-2, setting up the quarter final against a very strong Hall Grove. Unfortunately, the girls had used up every ounce of energy and missed out on the semi-finals. This has been one of the best performances from a Year 6 netball team for a considerable time and I would certainly bet on these girls striking gold next year in the U12 IAPS. I cannot express enough how talented and amazing each of these girls is and they will without doubt need their own trophy cabinet over the next few years. A pleasure to work with throughout the term, absolute stars! Reception’s Number Hunt Having returned refreshed from the Head Of Pre-Prep conference I was then struck down with the lurgy! Apologies for my extended absence. Spring seems to have sprung whilst I have been away and the staff have worked tirelessly to refresh the corridors with new displays of children’s work. Open Day was successful, with many families visiting, and all were impressed by the facilities and also the range of work produced by your children. Mother’s Day Assembly last week was one of those special occasions in Pre-Prep (photos available soon). It was so lovely to see the growing confidence of the children and the genuine sense of affection that was in the air. I hope all Mums enjoyed their flowers and a well-earned rest last Sunday! As we head into the final week of term we look forward to the swimming gala on Monday and some Easter fun on Friday. Don’t forget to deck out your Easter hats for our parade on the last day! Little Red Riding Hood Year 1 have been solving some mathematical problems using grids. They had to find as many routes as possible for Little Red Riding Hood to get through the woods and escape the lair of the big bad wolf. You will be glad to hear that all of the children escaped the wolf and they produced lots of excellent solutions! In Reception the children have been looking for numbers in the environment. They used the iPads to record what they found. Returning to the classroom they shared their work with their friends and identified the numbers they had found. The biggest number they found was 100. They have all painted fantastic animal pictures and done some wonderful writing. Please feel free to come and take a look at their work. Ballet Girls The Reception ballet girls have been learning a dance to perform to their parents next week. The girls are really looking forward to showing their parents the steps that they have learnt. Congratulations to Leo for becoming a big Brother to baby sister, Rosalind. A Spring Walk… This week the minis went for a walk around campus. We headed straight for the Science department where we fed the chickens, saw the guinea pigs and met ‘Solitaire’ the friendly ferret! During our walk we searched for signs of spring, we found; daffodils, daisies, primroses and snow drops! We then made our way to White Ladies house where the children and parents had a look around before feeding the hungry ducks! Back at school we shared a snack of Mini Cheddars and fruit… a big hit amongst all the children! See you next week for Forest School, please remember to wear a long sleeve top and trousers in the woods and bring some sensible footwear/weather appropriate clothes!
