TEACHER OF COMPUTER SCIENCE & ICT (Full-time for September 2015) MILLFIELD Millfield is the largest co-educational boarding school in the UK with over 1200 pupils, aged 1318. The pupil body is comprised of 75% full boarders and 25% day pupils. Located in Street in Somerset, the school is set in 150 acres of beautiful campus with outstanding facilities including an Olympic sized pool, two gymnasiums, a golf course, equestrian centre, concert hall, theatre, art gallery and music centre. THE ROLE Millfield wishes to appoint a teacher of Computer Science and ICT from September 2015 to join this successful, enthusiastic and well-resourced department. The successful applicant will be able to teach Computer Science to A level and ICT to GCSE level. Currently this subject area is amalgamated with the Business Studies department, but from September 2015 a separate Computer Science and ICT Department will be re-established. The successful candidate will have a genuine passion for digital learning and a strong desire to inspire this in others. They will be keen to embrace the disciplines of computer science and ICT, and also the embedded use of tablets across the school to support learning. The ideal candidate will be an NQT or experienced teacher skilled in all of the digital disciplines, interested in working with a wide variety of pupils, able to develop their own teaching and be proactive in supporting others who want to develop theirs. The candidate must be enthusiastic about encouraging pupils at all ability levels both within the curriculum and through clubs and extra-curricular activities, and will be proactive in raising the profile of the subject, and promoting it throughout the school. As a member of the department in this dynamic subject area, you will need to be knowledgeable, creative and passionate about the full range of digital subject disciplines. Another aspect of the role will be working with the Director of Academic ICT in delivering and supporting whole-school and cross-curricular digital initiatives. This includes the school’s recent 1:1 iPad mobile learning scheme, embedding digital skills in the curriculum, staff development and esafety initiatives. COMPUTER SCIENCE & ICT AT MILLFIELD The Computer Science and ICT department is staffed by six full-time teachers and one technician. The department is housed in a modern building which consists of five modern and well-equipped ICT rooms equipped with all-in-one widescreen PCs, a technician’s room, and a staff room. There is a strong emphasis on practical work within the department and the small set sizes allow pupils to work independently most of the time. All pupils and teachers have iPads which are used regularly to support learning in lessons and to aid preparation and administration. The school has cutting edge high-bandwidth WIFI and network infrastructure, supported by a dedicated and skilled team of IT support technicians. Significant investment has been made in ICT facilities across the school and the school has installed high specification all-in-one PCs and Macs in key areas of curriculum need, alongside our 1:1 iPad scheme. In year 9 we have designed a digital skills course that is aimed at developing a sound base of skills and knowledge to support the use of ICT across the curriculum; providing both essential digital skills for a pupils’ future study, and a base for the study of IGCSE Computer Science or ICT. Updated May 2015 In years 10 and 11 pupils have the option of taking the subject to IGCSE either in the form of Computer Science or ICT. The department strives to deliver these courses through experimental and investigative techniques. We aim to instil skills that will enable pupils to question the theory of computing, software design and its practical use and to be able to apply these skills to resolve unknown and unfamiliar situations. In the sixth form pupils can opt for AQA AS/A2 level Computer Science or ICT; between 8 and 18 pupils are entered for AS and A2 Computer Science or ICT (AQA specification) in the sixth form. Two/three tutors specialise in teaching AS/A2 Computer Science, and all tutors have been involved in teaching AS/A2 ICT. From September 2015 pupils will study AS/A2 CIE Computer Science. Be a group tutor attached to a boarding or day house. Be attached to a boarding house as a liaison tutor, doing a weekly evening duty, for which an additional allowance is paid. Millfield School has adopted the school-wide use of mobile technologies in teaching and learning, and applicants are expected to develop their own skills and teaching to make appropriate use of such opportunities. Staff are normally expected to find their own accommodation. A reduction of 65% of day fees is available to all permanent full-time teachers for any son/daughter attending Millfield Schools from Reception to Year 13.
