MSA Science testing will take place
on April 13 and 14, 2015.
Should you be unable to pick up your child from school if
he/she is sick or needs to leave early for an appointment,
please keep in mind that school staff can only dismiss your
child to someone listed on the Personal Data & Emergency
Record form the school has on file. You can use the Family
Portal to view who is authorized to pick up your child. If
you need to add someone to your child’s emergency
contacts, you can send a note to the office or have your
child pick up a new form to be completed. If an unexpected
emergency arises and you must send someone not listed as
an emergency contact to get your child, we must have your
written permission in order to dismiss your child to this
individual.
Student Absences
The Parent Link notifies parents when a student is
marked absent that day. Parents are encouraged
to listen to the Parent Link messages. If your
child has been mistakenly marked absent, it is
important that the office be notified right away
so that staff can follow up and correct any error.
If your child arrives to school late, they must
come to the office to sign in; otherwise, their
name remains on the absence list.
Student Parking
Students are not permitted to park behind the gym at any
time. This includes student athletes during practices and
games/matches. Please park in the student parking lot in
front of the school. Thank you.

ELIGIBILITY TO ATTEND PROM
Students who wish to attend prom must meet the dance criteria based on Wicomico County Policy and the
Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) goals set by the Maryland State Department of Education:

2.0 or higher GPA (will be based on April 16 report card grades)

No suspensions during the semester in which the dance occurs

Eligible for extracurricular activities per suspension policy
The qualifying period is from January 24, 2015, to April 24, 2015. The prom is on April 25, 2015, at Green
Hill Country Club. Wicomico County BOE policy requires that a student must be in attendance for the
school day in order to participate in any school-related activity. This means that students attending prom
must be in school on April 24, 2015. Appointments to get your hair and nails done, pick up flowers and
tuxes, etc., for prom are not excused absences. Please make your appointments accordingly. If your date is a
Mardela student, he/she must also meet the dance criteria.
MIDDLE SCHOOL DANCE CRITERIA
Students who wish to attend a middle school dance must meet the dance criteria based on Wicomico County

MARDELA WRESTLING
The Wrestling Team handed out several awards at the Winter Sports Banquet. Receiving the Unsung Hero
Award was Brett Bramble, receiving the Sportsmanship Award was Monroe Parker, and this year’s Most Valuable
Player Award was Nasir Tucker, who also received a jacket from the Athletic Booster Club acknowledging his
Regional Championship. Lisa and Tom Bowden were given customized TEAM MOM and TEAM DAD t-shirts for all
of the assistance they provided the team prior to, during, and after the wrestling season. Coach Johnson was given
a plague from the wrestling team and a NFH Certificate from the Athletic Department for being awarded the 2015
National Federation of High Schools Maryland Coach of the Year Award. In addition, two from Mardela were
inducted into the District VII and VIII Hall of Fame: Shemar Watts for reaching 100 wins and Coach Johnson for
winning the NFHS Coaching Award.

YEARBOOK
The 2015 edition will be another ALL COLOR Yearbook scheduled for a Fall 2015 delivery. The
yearbooks are available for purchase online at Smart-Pay.com or at the school with a check made payable to
Mardela Middle & High School. There are less than 15 yearbooks remaining online at the regular price of $65.

Senior Parents: It is best to submit the Senior Ad electronically to prevent it from losing any of its quality,
the resolution in electronic format is a lot better. WORD, PowerPoint, and Publisher are great programs
to use to create your ad electronically. If submitting the ad electronically, you can email it to Mrs. Skeen
or Coach Johnson or you can bring in a flash drive for us to upload the document. If don’t wish to do the
ad electronically you can place your pictures and message on a ½ sheet or full sheet of paper for us to
scan and return.

FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America)
So far this year, members have done an excellent job fulfilling their civic duties through a lot of
volunteer activities. They finished out the Winter season by participating in the Maryland Adopt-A-Highway
Program and cleaning their section of MD 313 in Mardela.
Award for Exemplary Achievement
At the Professional Development Schools National Conference earlier this month, Salisbury
University and Mardela Middle & High School were awarded the National Association for
Professional Development Schools Award for Exemplary Achievement. This award recognizes
outstanding PDS collaborative relationships. Specifically noted was the “high productivity and
morale” and “permeating spirit of reciprocal support and development” within the partnership. Also
applauded was the full immersion of teacher candidates in PDS initiatives; the advocacy of school
leaders; the establishment of a community of learners; and the congruent purpose and vision for the
partnership between teacher candidates, interns, beginning teachers, veteran educations,
administrators, and faculty.
PTA
The Mardela Middle and High School PTA would like to thank everyone for all of their
help and support during the Prom Fashion Show and Warriors Challenge. Both events
were huge successes.
The PTA is looking for new members to join the Board for next school year; there are
multiple positions available. If interested, contact a current Board member—Carrie
Bryant, Leigh Collings, Shanda Ward, Dawn Lowe, or Dana Baker. The PTA sponsors
many events throughout the year for your children; please join us!

Band Parent Meeting
The next Meeting of the Mardela Band Parents will be held Monday, April 13, 2015, at 6:00 p.m. in the Bandroom.

Band Practices and Performance Updates
The High School Symphonic Band received a “SUPERIOR” rating at the 2015 MMEA High School District Band
Festival at Wicomico HS on Wednesday, March 11! With the positive input from all of their judges (additionally,
the enthusiastic feedback from the composer of their one selection), their preparation will continue as they
prepare for their return to the Maryland State Band Festival and the Concert Band Competition at Winchester,
VA’s Apple Blossom Festival on May 1.
The Middle School Festival Band received a “SUPERIOR” rating at the 2015 ESBDA/MMEA Junior District Band
Festival at Stephen Decatur HS on Thursday, March 26. Having now qualified for the 2015 MMEA Junior State Band
Festival, prospects are being researched for the MS Festival Band to attend this event some day between May 1115. This is the second time the MS Festival Band has qualified for States (BOTH times with A LOT of snow
interference…) CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Middle School Bands Practices & Performances: Mark Your Calendars
The MS Intermediate Band (all 6th grade band students) will practice April 9(Th), & 13(M), both 2:45-4:00 p.m.
These are required practices as part of their 6th Grade Band Experience; please make arrangements that your
children are picked up from the school by 4:15 p.m.
The MS Intermediate Band will perform on Monday, April 20, at 7:00 p.m. in the MMHS Cafetorium. Band 6
players will report to the Bandroom by 6:15 p.m. to warm up and tune. Report in your black pants, long black
socks, black shoes, and uniform Strip Shirt. We perform at 7:00 p.m.

ATTENTION STATE SOLO & ENSEMBLE PERFORMERS: Plan to meet periodically to maintain and improve your
solos, duets and trios for your trip to States on Saturday, May 16 (details TBA). Check your schedules and plan to
perform your selections at the Spring Concert on April 20 (consider this an opportunity to showcase your
achievements and continue your preparation for States judges.)

The Warrior Marching Band and Bandfront will be traveling to Winchester, Virginia, April 30-May 2, 2015,
(Thursday Eve [gather 1:30 p.m. and leave by 2:30 p.m.] to Saturday), to participate in the Apple Blossom Festival.
The HS Symphonic Band will compete in a Concert Band Competition (May 1); the Warrior Marching Band and
Bandfront will compete in the Firemen’s Parade (May 1) and the Grand Feature Parade (May 2).
Our parade tune this year is “Give It One”—a hot jazz tune from Maynard Ferguson. Students need to come to
April evening marching rehearsals [April 14 (Tues), 22 (Wed) & 29 (Wed)] already marching as-good-as or better
than they marched in our extremely successful 2014 Christmas Parades.
A meeting of parents acting as chaperones will be held Wednesday, April 29, at 7:30pm in MMHS Cafetorium.
BingoMania 72
On Saturday, May 9, BingoMania 72 will be held by the Mardela Band Parents Organization at the Wicomico
County Youth and Civic Center. The doors open at 5:00 p.m., Instants Sales begin at 5:15 p.m., Early-Bird Play
begins at 6:00 p.m., and Regular Play of BingoMania 60 begins at 7:30 p.m. The Jackpot Round (.a single game
worth at least $5,000.00 [$10,000 in February 2015 according to attendance]) begins typically at 10:00 p.m.
In Mid-April, the Electronic BingoMania Portal on the MMHS Bands Wiki will be reactivated
(www.MardelaBands.wicomico.wikispaces.org). Returns will be asked of all parents who have students in the
Mardela Middle School Bands, High School Bands and Bandfront. Come out and help, for you will find this evening
to be a BLAST (and it provides handsomely for your children today and—with your help—will well into the future).
Evening food and drink is provided.
Our February BingoMania was WILD, with over 1100 bingo players gathering from Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey,
Pennsylvania, and beyond! We need your help; be a part of the action.

Changes to Wicomico County Public Schools Calendar for the 2014-2015 School Year
Maryland Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lillian Lowery has notified Superintendent Dr. John Fredericksen
that the request by Wicomico County Public Schools for a waiver of three missed school days has been
approved, making it possible for Wicomico to end the 2014-2015 school year on Wednesday, June 17.
The last three days (June 15, 16 and 17) will be early dismissal days. The state superintendent, in granting
the waiver request, said Wicomico has met the minimum threshold for instructional hours, and that it has
modified the school calendar to make up six of the nine days missed due to weather and road conditions.
Wicomico’s waiver request letter included the change of a professional day to a regular school day
(April 7) and the extension of the school year by five days (June 11, 12, 15, 16, 17) to make up six of the
nine missed days. The Board approved the following calendar revisions last month and at the March
Board meeting:
Tuesday, March 31: Early dismissal day for students, with schools dismissing two hours early for
students to give teachers time for professional development work. (This had previously been scheduled
as a full school day, but is now an early dismissal day.)
Tuesday, April 7: Regular school day (Professional day on that date moved to June, after the end of the
school year). Wicomico students and schools will now have a regular school day on Tuesday, April 7, to
make up one missed day. April 7 had been scheduled as a professional day, with part of the day for SLOs
(Student Learning Objectives). Now, teachers will have time on March 31 to work on their SLOs. Parents
and guardians of students who will be absent on April 7 due to prior family plans must provide the school
with written notice before April 7 for the student to have an excused absence for that school day.
Thursday, June 11-Wednesday, June 17: Wicomico students will make up five of the nine missed school
days by attending on these days, as stated on the approved 2014-2015 calendar. June 15, 16 and 17 will
be early dismissal days.
Friday, June 19: Last day for teachers
Note: Bennett Middle School students will end the school year on Friday, June 5, as time is needed to
relocate teachers, staff and equipment to the new Bennett Middle and to begin the decommissioning of
the current Bennett Middle School.

Guidance Update
Scheduling: Our counselors will be going into classes starting on March 30 to begin the scheduling process for next
year. General information will be shared with the class, and then students will meet individually with his/her
counselor during April and possibly into May. Juniors: if you are planning on applying to a MD system college or
university, you must take a non-trivial math your senior year. Many out-of-state colleges may require this too –
check those you are interested in. Freshmen and below: you must enroll in a math course every year you are in
high school. It is the law now, so there is no getting around it. Our counselors will help you plan this out.

ATEX: Forms for students (8th or 9th grade) interested in signing up to take the half-year ATEX course through
the Career and Technology Education (CTE) Center at Parkside are available through Guidance and should
be turned in as soon as possible.

Firefighter/EMT & Nursing Assistant: These are one-year CTE programs. Students do not go through ATEX
for these programs. Any student interested can sign-up outside of Mrs. Shiles’ office.

Cosmetology: This is a three-year program at CTE. Ninth graders could have signed up through ATEX this
year already. If you are interested and did not do ATEX, then the sign-up is available outside of Mrs. Shiles’
office.

Dual Enrollment: A student must be 16 years of age or older, have at least a 2.75 GPA and provide their
own transportation. Students will sign up with Mrs. Shiles. She will complete a dual enrollment form.
Students must apply to Wor-Wic (this can be done at any time). Wor-Wic is allowing us to offer their
diagnostic test to our students interested in dual enrollment and seniors going there next year for full enroll
right here at Mardela. The library has been booked for this on April 23 at 9:40 a.m. If you cannot make this
time, the diagnostic test can be taken in Mrs. Shiles office later that day or within the following week. Signups for the diagnostic test will be posted later in April. As always, students can still go to Wor-Wic and take
the diagnostic. (Students with 550 on the reading and math sections of the SAT do not have to take the
accuplacer diagnostic test for Wor-Wic.) After this is taken, students will then take his/her dual enrollment
from to Mr. Webster in admissions and schedule classes. The earlier the better! A copy of your schedule
MUST be given to Mrs. Shiles as soon as you get it. Your senior schedule cannot be finalized over the
summer without it.
Naviance: Keep using this college and career research site. Our counselors will continue to help students utilize the
many resources available through to our students, including college and career searches, personality tests, resume
building, college applications and scholarship searches. This month juniors will be working on building their resumes
and continuing to search for colleges
Scholarships: Keep the applications coming! Remember you can find the county scholarship list under the colleges
tab in Naviance. Then select “scholarship list.” If you select “deadline;” Naviance will sort the scholarships by date
making it easier to see the ones due soon. Remember, there are a few scholarships available to students in middle
through eleventh grade; you can search that too.

DRESS CODE POLICY
Approved March 9, 2010
Schools have three primary responsibilities with respect to students. The first responsibility is to foster academic
achievement. The second responsibility is to create and maintain a school environment that is safe, orderly, and
conducive to learning. The third responsibility is to promote and support positive community standards and values
such as civility, respect for others, self-respect, citizenship and other constructive character traits and behaviors.
Without these, teaching and learning will be negatively impacted.
Students have the responsibility to choose their attire, arrange their personal appearance, and maintain their personal
hygiene in a manner that is safe, healthy, non-offensive, and conductive to the educational process. The student dress
code is intended to create a positive school climate of respect for self and others, reduce the occurrence of discipline
problems, and maintain safety and order in the school so that effective teaching and learning can take place.
School staff members have the responsibility to report violations of the Dress Code Policy and respectfully address
students who are out of compliance with the policy. Administrators have the responsibility to investigate these reports,
encourage students to make better choices in attire, and assign appropriate consequences for infractions. It is also the
responsibility of the administrators and the staff to maintain an awareness of attire related to gang affiliation so that
the Dress Code Policy can be implemented effectively. A teacher or staff member is expected only to report violations
and is never expected to measure or touch a student they feel is in violation of the Dress Code Policy. Specific units of
measure for widths and lengths are provided to ensure that the policy is measurable and to alleviate misinterpretations
of the policy.
This policy shall apply to all students during the regular school day and at such other times as designated by the
principal. This policy shall apply in all school buildings and on all school grounds, on all school buses and other school
vehicles, and at all school-related, or Wicomico County Board of Education sponsored activities, including, but not
limited to school field trips and school-sponsored events.
Principals may grant exceptions to the dress code for disabilities or sincerely held religious beliefs if such
accommodations are reasonable and do not pose a hardship for the school. Principals may also grant exceptions for
specific, school-sponsored events or situations. This policy includes Physical Education class attire. Guidelines for sports
and extra-curricular uniforms worn during the school day are at the discretion of the principal.
Decisions concerning any dress code issues which are addressed or inferred in this policy are ultimately at the discretion
of the building principal.

What is the 24 Game?
The 24 Game is an exciting math game that students will be playing. Playing this game is a great way for students to
practice their math facts. Several versions of the game are available using different size numbers and mathematical
operations. Students in 6th grade will be using the Double Digits version and students in 7th and 8th grades will be using
the Integers version. These games are currently being introduced in your child’s classroom.
The students will be provided with many opportunities to play and practice the game in class. Once they are familiar with
the game, the cards, and the rules, a classroom tournament will be held using groups of four students until one winner is
determined from each classroom. The winners from each classroom will then compete against each other to determine
the grade level winner who will then represent the school at the county tournament in May.
The 24 Game is available at the Educational Supply Store or www.math24.com for anyone wishing to purchase a game
to play at home. They are also available for sign-out at the Wicomico County Library and their satellite locations during
your visit.
Description of the Double Digits Version
(Grade 6)
Each card consists of a wheel that contains 4 numbers printed in black. The object of the game is to make the number
24 from the four numbers on the game card. You can add, subtract, multiply and/or divide. You must use all of the
numbers on the wheel, but use each number only once. Many of the cards have multiple solutions. The cards are worth
1, 2 or 3 points, based on difficulty. The dots in the corners of the cards show the point value. Students must state the
final solution first, then give the steps to how they solved the problem.
Example: One solution to the card shown is:
3 x 8 = 24; 24 ÷ 8 = 3, 6 + 2 = 8, 3 x 8 = 24
Description of the Integers Version
(Grades 7 & 8)
The Integers version is played exactly like the Double Digits version. The only difference is that one, two, three or all
four of the numbers will now be a negative number and the solution can be a negative or a positive 24.
Example: One solution to the card shown is:
27 + - 3 = 24; - 6 ÷ 2 = - 3, 3 x 9 = 27, 27 + - 3 = 24
When is the 24 Game County Tournament?
On Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at 6:00 pm in the Commons at Salisbury University, the county-wide 24 Game tournament
will be held. A representative from every grade level from each elementary school and middle school will compete for the
title of Math 24 Champion. There will be one champion from each grade level.
