New scopes for Indooroopilly
Our Indooroopilly clinic is now using the
latest HD video endoscopy platform
including HD video endoscopes and
monitors.
These new scopes bring the average age of scopes
across Montserrat to less than two years old. The
benefit of this for our specialists is that the scopes offer
new visible details of the mucosal surface giving the
specialist improvements of the endoscopic diagnosis.
The Close focus feature allows more detailed exam
of mucosal details and digital filters including surface
filters to bring vascularity and topography to life. The
new scopes will benefit our Doctors and our patients
with functions that give the position diameter designed
for greater manoeuvrability to visualize more hidden
polyps, easier access to the distal side of polyps during
EMR and difficult polypectomy and easier navigation
through the sharp twists and turns of a difficult colon.

GP Evening at Indooroopilly
Early February Montserrat hosted another successful GP
education evening with GP Partners. Dr Rebecca Ryan
presented cases and details for GPs when they have
patients who have abnormal liver function tests, which
included managing the abnormal tests, when do you do
further investigations, what are you looking for and the
new treatments that are available.
Dr Sam Islam gave GP’s advice and details on treating
and diagnosing lower GI bleeds. With referrals to
our Clinic steadily increasing with this condition the
information Dr Islam presented was very topical. Dr Islam
went through the process for GP’s when presented with
a patient with PR blood and when to investigate further.

that is provided through the Brisbane Haemorroid Clinic
(BHC) so much so that we are planning our next GP
session around education on the BHC.
During the evening a lot of GP’s were asking about the
HALRAR procedure and management of haemorrhoids

than 50
GPs for their first Workshop
series. The topics that were discussed on
the night were the developments in the
management of Metastatic Colorectal
Cancer and the treatment of Chronic
Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL).
Medical Oncologist, Dr Hong Shue presented
a brief overview of chemotherapeutic agents in
the treatment of Metastatic Colorectal Cancer
and management of toxicities and side effects of
treatment. With colorectal cancer being statistically
the third highest diagnosed cancer on the Sunshine
Coast *, it’s important for Sunshine Coast GPs to
collaborate and share new treatment options and
information.
Second presenter was Clinical Haematologist, Dr.
Sorab Shavaksha who provided GP’s with advice on
the treatment of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia.
There are new treatments available for CLL which
have led to a positive impact on overall survival rates.
Our Doctors believe in an integrated approach to
treating Sunshine Coast residents being diagnosed

with cancer each year. The presentation is a great
way to bring the medical community together to
discuss treatments and side effects, and to help
ensure cancer patients on the Sunshine Coast have
access and knowledge to the newest treatment plans
available. Visit www.schoc.com.au

Oncology massage
In line with our wellness care charter
at SCHOC we now welcome Oncology
Massage therapist, Tania Shaw to the team.
Oncology Massage is used for symptom management
of some cancer treatments. Research has shown it
improves the quality of life for people with a history
or diagnosis of cancer by reducing the side effects
experienced from conventional treatment of cancer
and the symptoms of the disease process itself *, with
an improvement in a range of side effects such as
pain, fatigue, anxiety, nausea, depression and other
symptoms, including shortness of breath, memory
problems, dry mouth or disturbed sleep.
Tania received her Diploma in Remedial Massage
in 2003, going on to qualify in Oncology Massage
and Complex Lymphatic Therapy with internationally
recognised providers of education. Tania is also
the Queensland Coordinator and Facilitator for
Internationally renowned Oncology Massage Training
and regularly travels to facilitate modules 1 and 2
in regional areas of Queensland and the Northern
Territory.
Tania provides self-care education to empower
and facilitate wellbeing, an important factor in the
therapeutic treatment process. Whilst she focuses on
those who are living with the
physical effects from treatment
for cancer, Tania also offers her
massage skills and services to
extended family and friends.
