IMAGE CRITIQUE NIGHT – APRIL 1, 2015 On Wednesday, April 1, 2015, the Morgan Hill Photography Club (MHPC) will hold “Image Critique Night” as its monthly program. A guest commentator, Chris Cassell, has been invited to comment on MHPC members’ photographs. He will comment on an image’s impact, composition, technical proficiency, and photographic interest. He will also make suggestions that would help improve the image. Members (Note: You must be a dues paying member of the club on the date of submission to participate.) of the MHPC may submit up to two (2) photographic prints of their own creation for comment from the following categories: PEOPLE LANDSCAPE URBAN BLACK & WHITE PLANTS & ANIMALS If submitting two images, each must be from a different category. ONLY THE FIRST THIRTY-‐SIX (36) PRINTS RECEIVED ON A FIRST-‐COME-‐FIRST-‐SERVED BASIS WILL BE ACCEPTED. ☞ Bring your image to the meeting. Follow the below instructions: 1. A fee of $1 for each print submitted for critique will be collected at the meeting. 2. Each print (either monochromatic or color) must have a title -‐ “Untitled” is not a title. 3. Prints cannot be less than 8 inches on the shortest side or greater than 20 inches on the longest side so that they can fit in a viewing lightbox. 4. Prints must be matted or mounted on mat or foam board (so they lay flat while being viewed). The mat or mount can be larger than the print but cannot be greater than 20 inches on the longest side. 5. A small label (such as an address label) must be affixed to the back of the mat or mount. The label should contain the following information – a) the title of the photograph; b) the name of the artist; and, if necessary, the orientation of the image (i.e. which way is up) if it is not obvious by looking at the image. 6. Prints in frames or behind glass will not be accepted. 7. Entered prints cannot be used as part of image share that evening. ☞ You must also submit an electronic version of your print before the meeting: 1. The electronic image must be a jpeg file not less than 1920 pixels on the longest side. 2. The file name should start with the club member’s name, followed by a number representing the number of the image submitted, e.g. ClubMember01.jpg. 3. Submit your electronic image to: submissions@morganhillphotographyclub.org no later than 9PM Monday, March 30, 2015. Participants should pick up their prints before leaving the meeting. CHRIS CASSELL – BIOGRAPHY Chris has been photographing for over 30 years, using 35mm, medium format, 4x5, and digital SLR. He set up his first home darkroom in 1983, started printing digitally from scanned film in 1998, and started using a digital SLR in 2006. In 2002 he joined the Light and Shadow Camera Club, and became president of Light & Shadow in 2011. The landscape has been of particular interest, with a special fascination for scenes juxtaposing elements of nature and those of humanity. Camera club competition has favored his sports photography, though recent awards include "Print of the Year" (a Creative print) and 1st-Place PJ Print at 6C's 2008 and 2009 Annual Competitions, respectively. PHILOSOPHY: Good composition is essential in a successful image, whether it be an end in itself or a means to convey a story the maker is trying to tell. I will look for how well the elements in an image work together, whether or not they follow the standard "rules" of good composition. I have found that many images of value don't grab your attention right away but, rather, grow on you after some period of observation. This, of course, works against them in competition where many images must be viewed in a limited period of time. Though under the same time constraints as any judge, I will nevertheless attempt to be alert for these "quieter" images.
