April 2015
Message from the President
I represented IFEM at two recent national Emergency Medicine
conferences: first the SMME‘s 26th International Congress on
Emergency Medicine and Trauma in Mazatlan, Mexico, February
2 to 6, 2015, and the Vietnamese Society of Emergency Medicine
Conference on Emergency Medicine in Halong, Vietnam, March
9 to 13, 2015. Both conferences were very well attended, had
high quality didactic presentations, and had very enjoyable social events. I look forward to IFEM’s participation in these conferences again next year. Planning for the 2016 ICEM in Cape
Town, South Africa, is well along and planning for the 2018 ICEM
in Mexico City is starting; if you are interested in being a speaker at either of these conferences, please contact the Organizing
Committees.

Royal College of EM
The College of Emergency Medicine has been granted the
‘Royal’ title by Her Majesty the Queen on advice of her ministers.
From now on it will be known as the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM). The Royal appellation brings the college
in line with other colleges in nomenclature. It recognizes the
importance of Emergency Medicine and contribution made by
the leadership and all fellows and members.
False ICEM Meetings
Just a reminder to all IFEM members that the World Academy
of Science Engineering and Technology (WASET) https://www.
waset.org/conference continues to promote ‘International
Conference on Emergency Medicine ’ conferences in London,
Montreal, Rome and Istanbul.
We believe this is a scam ‘phishing’ exercise and are not in
fact conferences.

IFEM has a process for endorsement of research projects and collaborations. Our first project to be
endorsed is CENTER-TBI.
CENTER-TBI is a large European project that aims to improve the care for patients with Traumatic
Brain Injury (TBI).
It forms part of the larger global initiative InTBIR: International Initiative for Traumatic Brain Injury
Research with projects currently ongoing in Europe, the US and Canada.
CENTER-TBI brings the newest technologies and many of the world's leading TBI experts together in
a much needed effort to tackle the silent epidemic of TBI. International and multidisciplinary
collaboration are key elements to the project in which past dogmas will be left behind and innovative
approaches undertaken. As Coordinators of CENTER-TBI we are proud to lead this generationally
unique project.

CHANGES to Australasian College for Emergency Medicine Training Program
The Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) is directly responsible for the training and assessment of specialist emergency physicians across Australia and New Zealand. ACEM conducted a review of the
ACEM Training Programme (2009 – 2011) to ensure that the curriculum remains contemporary in terms of both
clinical content and educational method. This resulted in a set of recommendations for change to Emergency
Medicine training. The revised training programme which fulfills the recommendations from the review is to
be implemented in 2015. This letter is to inform you of the key changes to the ACEM Training Programme that
will be implemented from the 2015 training year.
Key Changes include:
•
Introduction of Emergency Medicine Workplace based Assessment
•
Changes to the Fellowship Examinations
•
Modification of training time requirements to increase flexibility
•
Introduction of Emergency Medicine Curriculum Framework
•
Review of Accreditation Standards
