Pingus has a sense of individuality that is often lacking in today’s wines. And that individuality makes it unlike any other wine in the world, let alone Spain. Pingus is made by the visionary Danish winemaker Peter Sisseck. Soon after arriving in Spain in 1990, Peter acquired a few ancient and created a wine named for his childhood nickname, “Pingus.” of the greatest young wines he’d ever tasted, and Pingus was quickly established as one of the world’s great wine collectibles. It routinely sells for $800 to $1000+ a bottle. Priorat had been one of Spain’s important pre-Phylloxera wine regions. And with its unique terroir of steep hills and terraces, Alvaro believed he could make wines that rivaled the best of Europe. crown jewel property in Priorat, a precipitous, northeast-facing Garnacha vineyard on well-drained schist that had been planted between 1900 and 1940. Alvaro named it for a small chapel, or hermitage, that sits atop the hill. Today, L’Ermita sells for upwards of $1000 a bottle. Includes: A visit to the ancient village of Gratallops with Decanter’s Man of the Year, Alvaro Palacios. During your visit to his spectacular cellars, you will have a personal tasting with Alvaro. Alvaro Palacios If anyone embodies the promise and spirit of “The New Spain,” it’s Alvaro Palacios. His L’Ermita is widely considered— along with Peter Sisseck’s Pingus—to be the most important Spanish wine of the modern era. His contributions to Spanish winemaking have been so great that he was named Decanter One of nine children born to the owners of Rioja’s respected Palacios Remondo, Alvaro studied enology in Bordeaux, while working under Jean-Pierre Moueix at Chateau Pétrus. He credits his tenure at Pétrus for much of his winemaking philosophy and for showing him “the importance of great wines.” In the 1980s, Alvaro was drawn to the largely abandoned, ancient vineyards of Priorat.
