Giuseppe Mascarello - Private winery visit with a gift of a signed
bottle of Barolo Monprivato at the end of your experience. Today,
Mauro Mascarello is the last remaining giant of the great Barolo
generation that included Giovanni Conterno and Bartolo Mascarello.
Mauro has been the winemaker for the Giuseppe Mascarello estate
since the late 1960s, succeeding his father, Giuseppe, and his
grandfather, Maurizio, both legends in their time. And like them,
Mauro is a traditionalist dedicated to long fermentations and aging
in massive old barrels. ”Mauro makes some of the most compelling,
traditional wines in Piedmont.” Antonio Galloni
Alessandro Masnaghetti Vineyard Tour – Priceless! An afternoon privately touring Barolo’s vineyards
with the man considered to be the world’s greatest expert! As in Burgundy, the great vineyards of
Barolo are divided among countless owners. But until Alessandro Masnaghetti unlocked the door, no one
outside the area knew who owned what. Tirelessly, Alesssandro researched every square inch of land
for its history, soil, exposure and ownership. The end result was a series of maps whose level of detail is
unprecedented, not only in Italy but the world. It is an understatement to say that he knows more about
Barolo’s vineyards than anyone else alive.

Bruno Giacosa for not only the stature of his work, but
the dizzying number of famous wines he has made over
the course of a career that began in 1961. And while

century, produced a steady stream of heroic wines
from both zones. In fact, so remarkable have been his

A TRIP BACK IN TIME: AN UNFORGETTABLE WINE JOURNEY
FOR FOUR TO MADEIRA
INCLUDES: Tasting, winery visit and vineyard tour with Ricardo Freitas of Vinhots

Pereira D’Oliveira, hosted by Luis D’Oliveira. A driver will be provided for a day tour of
the island. Lunch or dinner with Luis. | Private tour and tasting at the Old Blandy Wine
Lodge, founded 1811, in Funchal | Winery visit and tasting with Helena and Isabel Borges
at the old house of H.M. Borges | Private tour and tasting at Blandy
On a 1950 visit to Madeira, Sir Winston Churchill was honored by the island’s British community with a
dinner party. As a special tribute, his hosts opened a rare 1792 vintage Madeira bottled in 1840. When
serving the guests himself, asking each in turn, “Do you realize that when this wine was vintaged Marie
Antoinette was alive?”
Madeira’s longevity earns it a special place in the realm of old wine. What other wine requires over a
breathing and can stand up to weeks in a decanter, without losing its complexity or its richness? And
how many wines can live for two centuries and still offer not only the pleasure of their antiquity, but also
the enjoyment of drinking?
Of the hundreds of families who’ve produced and shipped Madeira over the past two centuries, few
remain, including Blandy’s, Borges, D’Oliveira and Barbeito.
You will sample Madeiras dating back to 1850 with Luis D’Oliveira. A driver will also be provided
for a tour of the islands including lunch or you may choose to dine with Luis one evening.
For 200 years, Blandy’s Madeira has been synonymous with quality Madeira wine. The Blandys are
unique in being the only family of all the original founders of the Madeira wine trade to still own and
manage their own original wine company. The family has played a leading role in the development
of Madeira wine throughout its long history and members of the family continue to live on Madeira,
maintaining a tradition that goes back to 1811.
You will have a private tour of Blandy’s centuries-old wine lodge that will include a tasting of old
Madeiras.
H.M. Borges is an independent company founded by H.M. Borges in 1877. It is one of the oldest surviving
producers. You will enjoy a winery visit and tasting with H.M.’s great-great-grandaughters, Isabel
and Helena, who today manage their famous house.
Donated by: Barbeito, D’Oliveira, Madeira Wine Company and H.M. Borges
We will do our very best to schedule visits for your preferred dates. However, neither the Muscarelle nor the
individual wineries can be held responsible if any visits cannot be arranged or it becomes necessary to make
changes to the particulars. Requests for visits should be made at least 90 days prior to your requested dates.

has married a deep respect for Madeira’s roots with profound energy and innovation. His work, and his

While other Spanish wines have achieved
international recognition, Pingus is one of the very
few that has joined the ranks of the world’s most
coveted wines and is known and admired wherever
great wine is discussed.
Pingus has a sense of individuality that is often
lacking in today’s wines. And that individuality
makes it unlike any other wine in the world, let
alone Spain.
Pingus is made by the visionary Danish winemaker
Peter Sisseck. Soon after arriving in Spain in
1990, Peter acquired a few ancient and created a

Alvaro Palacios
If anyone embodies the promise and spirit of “The New
Spain,” it’s Alvaro Palacios. His L’Ermita is widely considered—
along with Peter Sisseck’s Pingus—to be the most important
Spanish wine of the modern era. His contributions to Spanish
winemaking have been so great that he was named Decanter
One of nine children born to the owners of Rioja’s respected

while working under Jean-Pierre Moueix at Chateau Pétrus.
He credits his tenure at Pétrus for much of his winemaking

In the 1980s, Alvaro was drawn to the largely abandoned,

Over the centuries the property has been depleted, and the
Banks now have over 100 acres that are reached by a long,
curving drive lined with mature cedars. They have lived at White
Hall for the last 30 years, adding wings in the early 90’s to the
main structure. The Party Barn was built in 2007 as a Virginia
version of the Napa Valley Reserve hospitality room, and has
hosted many wonderful celebrations and charity events. Their
home and barn sit on the Ware River, and the South Eastern
exposure affords both beautiful sun and moon rises.
Enjoy an incredible evening at the historic White Hall Plantation at the Party Barn on the Ware River,
The afternoon begins at 4pm with a reception featuring wine and Southern craft cocktails while
enjoying the view of the River. Expect to sample some bites prepared by Guest Chefs Tom Power of the
Fat Canary, Sam McGann of The Blue Point and Chef Harper Bradshaw of Harper’s Table. There will be
live music and perhaps a special surprise guest too.
Dinner gets started at 5:30pm paired with some special wines. Come ready to mingle, relax and enjoy

WE SAVED THE BEST FOR LAST
INCREDIBLE COLLECTION OF 1995 BORDEAUX FROM
REGGIE AKDOGAN’S CELLAR
INCLUDES: 42 bottles (750ml)
Château Haut Brion 1995 (10 bottles)
“It is fun to go back and forth between the 1995 and 1996, two superb vintages for Haut-Brion. The
1995 seems to have sweeter tannin and a bit more fat and seamlessness when compared to the more
structured and muscular 1996. Certainly 1995 was a vintage that the brilliant administrator Jean Delmas
burning wood embers intermixed with vanilla, spice box, earth, mineral, sweet cherry, black currant,
good 40-45 seconds.” Anticipated maturity: 2006-2035. WA 96
Château La Mission Haut Brion 1995 (4 bottles)
counterbalancing components of fruit and glycerin. As in most 1995s, the color remains a healthy
dark plum/purple. One of the bigger wines of the vintage, the ripe, powerful Merlot component has
buttressed the Cabernet elements, giving the wine plenty of body, tannin and La Mission’s classic
asphalt, cassis, blackberry, smoky barbecue, meaty notes intermixed with a hint of hot rocks.”
Anticipated maturity: 2020-2035?. WA 95+
Château Mouton Rothschild 1995 (17 bottles)
“This wine is evolving into one of Mouton-Rothschild’s greatest vintages. It boasts an inky purple color,
as well as a powerful, blockbuster nose of explosively jammy cassis intermingled with toasty new oak,
minerals, and spice. The wine is layered, with extraordinary depth, richness, glycerin, and length. This is
undoubtedly the greatest Mouton since the 1986, with a more precocious, up-front character than that
1995 will be approachable after bottling, but I expect it to close down (as most Mouton-Rothschilds do)
after 6-7 years in the bottle, not to re-emerge for 15-20 years.” Anticipated maturity: 2005-2030. WA 97
(11 bottles)
coaxing. In the mouth, it is beautifully knit, medium-bodied, suave, and elegant, with no intention of
20 years of cellaring.” Anticipated maturity: 2008-2035. WA 95
