How music can make your kids smarter
What science says
There is a widespread view that learning to play a musical instrument in childhood
stimulates cognitive development and leads to enhanced skills in a wide variety of areas,
including mathematics and general IQ. Now, in a recent scientific study done by Harvard
medical school, Boston College and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the experts
found that Children who study a musical instrument for at least three years, outperform
children with no instrumental training on non-musical tests of vocabulary and nonverbal reasoning. Both the above skills are essential for a child's developing intelligence.
This new finding adds to a list of music's magic. Tests showed that kids who practiced
instruments scored much higher than their non-musical counterparts on auditory
discrimination and finger dexterity, both skills closely tied with musical training. The longer
the child was musically trained, the higher the scores.
Psychologist Ellen Winner, one of the experts who conducted the study said “It could be
that kids who are better at these skills to begin with are the ones who stick with music
training," Winner said. "So if I'm a really smart kid I'm more likely to stick with music
training."
"Music involves grasping patterns, and the non-verbal reasoning task involves grasping
patterns," Winner told Live Science magazine. "You have to pay attention to the pattern of
sounds, and you also have to pay attention to the pattern of the notes when you're looking
at music notation."
*The study was done by Harvard Medical School, psychologist Ellen Winner of Boston College and Project Zero, Harvard
Graduate School of Education, Gottfried Schlaug of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and their colleagues.
The findings were detailed in the Oct. 29 issue of the online journal PLoS ONE.

How music makes kids smarter?
For the last eleven years, having taught music to thousands of students at my institute, I
have seen that those who attended regular sessions for a prolonged period eventually
ended up securing much better careers & opportunities than those who didn't. Based on
my personal experience, I can confirm that many of them were not focused and their
concentration was poor before they started taking music lessons. Later, as they
progressed to higher music grades, they became more focused and started showing
excellent results. Surprisingly they started showing equally good results in academics and
sports too. I saw their personality being totally transformed. The effect that training (or
skill acquisition) in one domain might have on skills and performances in other domains is
commonly referred to as 'transfer' or 'near transfer'.
I specially remember one kid, Rishabh from my 2004 batch. He was initially an introvert
child, who was average in studies. When he started music classes, I realized he needed
extra attention. I used a method which included musical foundations, inspirational talk
and a positive approach towards the student. After a few months, he was totally into
music. Surprising everyone, he topped two prestigious music exams. I still remember
when his grandfather told me that now he is equally focused in studies. A few years later
he informed me that he was selected in a reputed engineering college. His success story
confirmed my belief in positive powers of music and also the method I was using to teach.
Now this method is an integral part of the music teaching at our institute.
However, not all the kids who joined our classes were transformed. I have felt that parents
and music teachers play a very important role in this process. All kids at some point of time
lacked interest in music lessons. They felt bored and wanted to take a break from music
classes. This is where the parents came in. They talked to me and insisted that their kids
continue with the lessons and how I can be of help. So we made consistent efforts to make

Arnav, who was a very cute kid, joined my institute in 2004. For a couple of months that
followed, he was a naughty kid who couldn't sit for an hour. Because of the lack of
concentration, his progress was slower. His mother, who was really keen for his progress in
music, talked to me a couple of times and shared her concern. She told Arnav that music
school is just like normal school and he has to attend all his classes. I also talked to him and
told him the importance of concentration. I gave him a few examples and asked him
whether he would like to become a successful person. Arnav who was just 5 years that time,
surprisingly responded to my talk and became a totally different child for the years to come.
Now he's a very confident child, studying in a reputed school and doing well in his studies.
So, approach of the parents, teachers and people around a child matters and we need to
guide them at every step.

sure they continue with their lessons. Eventually the kids started showing interest and later
I saw a total shift in their personality.

Benefits of music education
Benefits of proper & systematic music education. It is interesting to see their interdependence
I don't know whether music training 'magically' affects a child's personality and intellect, I
can confirm that there are some practical aspects that actually make them smarter:

5
Better co-ordination
According to scientific studies, best exercises for a human being are those which involve
co-ordination between hands, eyes and brain. Playing a musical instrument involves coordination of both hands (sometimes all four limbs, like playing a drumkit), eyes and brain.
Better concentration
While performing music, a child has to fully concentrate on different aspects of a song, like
note pitches, rhythm and lyrics.
Better Task orientation
I think the best skill a child can learn from music is 'task orientation'. In music, even an
average performance takes 100% preparation. As a performer, you are not allowed to
make even a single mistake. While preparing a song, children always have a very clear taskto prepare the song to its entirety, without any mistake. This task alone makes them
focused in their approach.
Better Confidence
Each time a child performs a piece of music, it gives a sense of completion and
achievement thus giving him a boost in his confidence. If he performs to an audience, the
amount of confidence he gains is even greater.

Better imagination & creativity
Better mental health
Growing children, specially teenagers tend to be reserved and they need to channelize their
emotions. If they are learning music, it becomes a medium to vent out their emotions. They
can release their anger, pain or frustration through music.
Learning music can also channelize children's excessive energy. It calms children who are
hyperactive. Percussion Instruments like drum-kit are specially helpful in channelizing
hyperactive kids' energy.
Better discipline
Regular music lessons develop a good habit of discipline. I have always felt that after
learning music for longer time, children develop a relationship with the instrument. From
taking care of their instrument, regularly practicing, attending classes, doing assignments,
preparing for music tests & performances to listening their favorite music, they follow a
certain kind of discipline, which is eventually evident in other areas as well.
MUSICOLOGY lessons
While learning songs of different moods and content, children become more imaginative.
Gradually, when they become better at music theory and technique, they start composing
& writing songs.
6
Music is a collaborative art. It's always performed with other musicians. That's why I do not
support individual, one on one music- training. This is the reason I introduced group
training at my institute. If taught properly in a group, children learn from each other. They
can see their own shortcomings and they can acquire others' strengths. Moreover, and
most importantly- they learn to work with each other and respect each other, an
indispensable skill to become successful in our modern society.
Better careers
College admissions administrators all over the world, including Harvard & Oxford continue
to cite music education as an important factor in making admissions decisions. They claim
that music participation demonstrates time management, creativity, expression, and openmindedness.
