LIVING TORAH:
Equanimity
A student asked a rabbi to take him as a disciple. The Master asked him,
“My son, have you attained equanimity?” The student said, “Master,
explain your words.” The Master replied, “If one person honors you
and the second insults you, are they equal in your eyes?” The
student said, “No, my master, I feel pleasure from the person who honors
me, and pain from the one who insults me.” The Master said to the
student, “Go in peace, my son. Until your soul does not feel
honor when one honors you and
embarrassment when one
insults you, your consciousness is not
ready to be attached to the supernal
realm. So go and surrender your heart
even more, a true surrendering, until you
have attained equanimity.”

Have you heard about
Humans of Mount Zion?
(Interviews with Phil Goldman as Inspired by
Brandon Stanton's Humans of New York)
Each week, we introduce Mount Zion members to
one another, one member at a time. We each have
a story to tell, and those stories can build connections between us. Read more at:
mzion.org/homz-blog
It is our honor to present our 159th Annual Report for Mount Zion Temple. In September, our
Board adopted our Strategic Plan focused on
“Strengthening Connections”. This plan is not
about infrastructure rather relationships. It builds
on our vision of being a welcoming and vibrant Jewish spiritual home, open to all, living Torah (Life-long learning), Avodah (Worship) and Gemilut Chasadim (Acts of Loving Kindness). In our holy community, we celebrate, comfort, and create meaning in our
lives while we seek justice in our world.
The reports inside the report (available at mzion.org) detail specific achievements with
our Strategic Plan implemented in manifold ways.
In addition to our Strategic Plan - and related to it, we have focused this year on Torah.
The primary vehicle for teaching Torah was introducing Mount Zion to Mussar, a way
to live Torah. For over six months, 75 congregants participated in the study and practice of Mussar in four groups led by Rabbis Spilker and Adler, Cantor Strauss Klein,
and Julie Dean. In February, we hosted Mount Zion’s first adult co-ed retreat weekend
with Alan Morinis, head of the Mussar Institute as our scholar in residence.
Our financial situation is stable, in large part because of our first Annual Campaign
L’Chaim 5775. L’Chaim 5775 was a success, meeting both our participation and financial goals. We thank all who contributed to the Annual Campaign and all who
worked to make it happen.
Mount Zion remains connected to our local Jewish community and to Israel. We hosted
and cosponsored a well-attended, day-long conference entitled From Confrontation to
Conversation—Israel on Campus and in the Community. Over Passover, we hosted a seder
for over 130 people and our last day Festival service was held at Sholom Home East. We
received our third Irving R. Fain award for Social Justice from the URJ (Religious Action Center) for our Year of Tzedek, learning and acting on our Jewish values for improving our world.
We are grateful for our partnerships, both clergy/staff and lay leaders, who make all of
the above possible. We will miss Ana Apter, our interim Religious School Director, who
leaves us at the end of the academic year to join her husband Adam in his new position
in Philadelphia. We look forward to welcoming Susan Amram Summit as our new Religious School Director in July.
With gratitude for our congregation.
Adam Stock Spilker, Rabbi
Ellen B. Rest, President, 2013-15
Services Live Streamed: Stay Tuned
This Fall, Mount Zion will start streaming some of our
services live over the internet. Using our new HD camera and recording system, we will broadcast services, programs, and events in the main Sanctuary to your PC,
laptop, or mobile device. This will allow members and
guests who cannot attend in person to watch it wherever
they are located. Stay tuned this Fall for more details.

CHAI NOTES
Some of my fondest memories involve
singing in choirs. From the time I moved to
Wisconsin at the age of 9 and until I moved
to Baltimore for graduate school 13 years
later, I sang with over a dozen choral groups.
It took me moving to the East Coast to learn
that the Midwest, and Minnesota in particular, has earned a national reputation for choral
excellence. According to Chorus America,
Minnesota is home to over a hundred independent professional, community, and youth choirs, in additional to
thousands of choirs at schools and houses of worship.
CHOIRS AT MOUNT ZION
Come sing with us!
We at Mount Zion are doing our part as well: we are home to three vibrant choirs that encompass kids (Shir Tzion), teens (Shir Chants), and
adults (Torah Tones) from the age of 8 on up! And we are thrilled to announce that Dr. Jayson Rodovsky will be joining us as the new director
of Torah Tones.
Shir Tzion, for 3rd - 6th graders
Jayson is a graduate of Yale University’s
School of Music and holds graduate degrees in choral conducting and organ performance. He served as Editor of
Transcontinental Music Publishing, a division of the Union for Reform Judaism
(URJ) in New York, for over 10 years. In
addition, he has served as Organist and
Music Director at congregations in Connecticut and New York, including Central
Synagogue
in
Manhattan,
Congregation Kol Ami in White Plains,
NY, and Larchmont Temple in Larchmont, NY. Jayson is a Past President of the Guild of Temple Musicians (GTM) and has led choirs for
the URJ, the American Conference of Cantors (ACC) and the GTM,
at their annual conferences and the URJ’s Biennial. He also is a member of The American
Guild of Organists
(AGO) and serves on
the advisory board of the
ARCOS Chamber Orchestra. Dr. Rodovsky is
a frequent lecturer, performer and presenter at
conferences and conventions of organizations including the American
Choral Directors Association (ACDA), the
Music Educators National Conference (MENC), Chorus America and the American Guild
of Organists (AGO).

FROM THE PRESIDENT
Mount Zion Temple
Board of Directors
What an honor and pleasure to communicate with you for the first time as Mount
Zion’s President! For those of you who may
not know me (yet), a short introduction: My
wife, Kate, and I joined Mount Zion 22
years ago along with our 3 young children,
Eliot, Carlos and Rosa. Sons Sam and Abe
soon followed. I will complete one cycle of
Temple life, God willing, when I accompany
Rabbi Spilker and Abe’s 2015 Confirmation Class on their New York excursion in October, 14 years after chaperoning the same trip with Eliot
’s class when the ruins of the Twin Towers were still smoldering.
Kate and I are both transplants from Appalachia; Kate hails from Pennsylvania and I am a loyal son of West Virginia. Kate and I met in a calculus class at the U of M, thus providing me with a single positive
memory of that experience. We live in the West Metro and drive past a
number of synagogues to be a part of this community, a reminder that
Mount Zion is truly a congregation of the greater Twin Cities.
I am grateful to my friend and outgoing President, Betsy Rest, for her
superb leadership and many accomplishments including the “Strengthening Connections” strategic plan which was approved by the Board last
September. Since then, our focus has been on carrying out several of the
plan’s key recommendations. “Strengthening Connections” will continue to guide the Board’s work in the coming years. Based on the four
strategic goals outlined in the plan, here are a few of the changes that are
already in place or “coming soon”:
As we find many ways to strengthen connections at Mount Zion, this column is a
way to get to know members of Mount Zion’s Board of Directors. Our nominations
process for the Board is very open and involves many people. Therefore our Board
is as diverse and representative as can be. We are grateful for all who serve in leadership and volunteer their talents for our community. We are blessed that Batya
Spector volunteered to write these vignettes.
Gail Gendler
Gail is a long-term Mount Zion Temple member
whose two daughters, Jennifer and Allison, now
college graduates, attended our Religious School.
Gail sought membership because she desired a religious community with a physical as well as spiritual space, a congregation and building with
programs that supported strong Jewish identities.
In her words: where they would have no questions
about who they were and why they were, where they
felt at peace and at home... And that’s what Mount Zion is; it’s a place
where your identity and your religious tradition is not questioned. She
joined the Board of Directors in 2011, first as a regular member and
continued while serving as Sisterhood Co-President from 2012-2014.
As Co-President, Gail initiated the ‘Women’s Networking Group’, as a
collaborative event with Bet Shalom and Temple Israel Sisterhoods. Gail
is also an Area Director for the Midwest District of Women in Reform
Judaism. Gail sees her congregational role as an individual effort within
the larger community where we each contribute to meet the interests
and needs of current and future members.
Relationships
• Deepened connections to congregants and clergy through forming
Mussar Practice Groups
• Learned stories of new and current members through Humans of
Mount Zion & Board Profiles in our Temple publications
• Enhance Lipschultz Lounge as a gathering space, making it more
inviting to form and feed relationships (Summer of 2015)
• Provide permanent nametags at services and events (proposal to
Board in Summer of 2015)
• Create a biennial survey to assess congregant satisfaction (trial run
with the Board in Summer of 2015)
• Created a visitor’s “Ask Me” table at Shabbat Onegs
Gail and husband Roger live in White Bear Lake; Gail is a realtor with
Edina Realty and Roger is retired after a lifetime of employment with
the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
Aimee Gonzalez
Mount Zion Temple clergy invited Aimee to a
leadership position with Mount Zion Temple’s
20s and 30s group, Noazim (the daring ones) in
spring 2013. That led her to a one year membership on the Board of Directors for an open seat
representing Noazim and in spring 2014 to a two
year term as a regular Board member. It’s a great
benefit to Mount Zion Temple that the term ‘daring one’ suits Aimee even further because she is
the impetus and energy for making technology a key aspect of Mount
Zion’s new strategic plan, ‘Strengthening Connections.’ With ideas in
her mind like live streaming Shabbat and Holiday services and with
recommendations from Tom Marver for clergy podcasts of Torah study,
sermons or other learning activities, Aimee is eager to ensure Mount
Zion Temple is accessible to all who want to be connected to our synagogue community in a variety of ways. Aimee, whose Hebrew name
is ‘Rivka Ami’ (Rebecca for her mother and Ami meaning ‘my people’),
also enjoys opportunities to engage in real-time, face-to-face conversation with co-congregants.
Participation
• Assembled and trained a new volunteer leadership team to oversee our summer Shelter Program
Digital Communication
• Re-designed Mount Zion’s website and This Week at Mount Zion
to make it more mobile device-friendly, interactive and fun.
• Featured our Humans of Mount Zion stories on the Mount Zion
web site and This Week at Mount Zion.
Giving
• Established the L’Chaim 5775 Annual Campaign with a focus on
communicating the Jewish value of a “free-will offering” to every
Mount Zion household.
Thanks to YOU, the Mount Zion community, for realizing these accomplishments through your gifts of kindness, passion, hard work and
financial support. Todah Rabah!

Milton Steinberg’s As a Driven Leaf
Brotherhood Meetings: All Mount Zion men are invited to these
It is my personal opinion that Rabbi Milton Steinberg’s As a Driven
Leaf is the finest Jewish novel ever written. There’s certainly no lack of
candidates for that literary assessment – other titles which come immediately to mind are Henry Roth’s Call It Sleep; Andre SchwarzBart’s The Last of the Just; and Arthur A. Cohen’s In the Days of
Simon Stern. Others would nominate works by Philip Roth, Elie
Wiesel, or Abraham Cahan – among others. For me, what makes Steinberg’s novel stand out from the rest is his creativity and mastery of the
details of Jewish life in the second century. Steinberg takes one line,
among others, out of the Talmud, and creates a whole world out of it.
The line is about Elisha ben Abuyah – the esteemed rabbi who became
an apostate as he sought reason and certainty in Hellenistic philosophy
and civilization when his faith faltered in the face of personal tragedy.
But it is not only Steinberg’s magisterial mastery of the tensions of second century Jewish life in the Roman empire at work here; there is
Rabbi Steinberg’s allegory of Jewish life in the twentieth century, and
the alienation of Jews in modernity desiring to find the answer that
eluded Elisha. A seminal work by one of the last century’s greatest rabbinical minds. Strongly recommended.

& Summit School. Playing and following team sports and snowboarding are Ethan's main past times. However, playing baseball is his
favorite as he competes on three different teams during the baseball
season which for him never really ends. Ethan is trying to figure out
a career that involves playing/watching/managing a sports team. When
he’s not in school or playing sports he can usually be found reading or
hanging out with friends and family. For his Mitzvah Project Ethan
volunteered with the Sanneh Foundation, which provides life skills for
at-risk kids using soccer as the catalyst to empower kids. In honor of
his Bar Mitzvah, Ethan will be donating a portion of his gift money to
the Sanneh Foundation.

Mount Zion’s Year of Tzedek received the Irving J. Fain Award for outstanding social action programming. The Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism presented the prize to nine Reform congregations during its
biennial conference in April. Tom Marver accepted the award on Mount
Zion’s behalf,
We are saving a spot for you!
IN THE COMMUNITY
Mount Zion previously received the award in 2002 and 2009. The framed
certificates will go on display in the building later this year.
Food for Your Soul
Thursday, June 18
A Year of Tzedek — Having the Conversation began in the fall of 2012 as an
effort to bring social justice to the forefront of congregational life. The program challenged members to connect with tikkun olam on individual, congregational, and community-wide levels.
Food For Your Soul is a one of a kind dinner party-each featuring a delicious dinner and a featured
Foodie (food guest), including chefs, food critics,
food writers and restaurant entrepreneurs. Because
of the generosity of hosts and hostesses, the elegant
dinners will take place in ten-plus homes or venues
with approximately 30 guests at each home, providing for an intimate setting and fun evening. Food For Your Soul
has raised more than $350,000 in its four-year-history. Raised funds
benefit the residents of Sholom and the more than 1,000 seniors each
year at Sholom’s campuses. More info: foodforyoursoul.org.
“During the year, we helped each person connect a formative part of their
life-story to one of three Jewish motivations for justice: leaving Egypt, being
in the image of God, and tikkun olam,” said Rabbi Adam Stock Spilker.
Mount Zion attempted to show congregants how seemingly small actions
such as sharing a personal history or recording a community narrative can
pull people of different backgrounds together to tackle social justice issues
in our city, state, and nation. Events during the year included a post-election open meeting, a public meeting with Governor Dayton, and a mitzvah day at Neighborhood House. Cantor Rachel Stock Spilker led a
mitzvah trip to a Jewish community in Uganda.
Grandparent & Grandchild Weekend
Friday, June 19-Sunday, June 21
JCC Perlstein Resort near the Wisconsin Dells
“We emerged from this year with renewed intention, greater clarity about
our Jewish mandate for justice, and new partnerships with our neighbors
to address the economic disparities and racial injustices in our community,” Rabbi Spilker said.
Create special memories at camp with your grandchildren (ages 412). Families can participate in activities– boating, swimming, horseback riding, fishing, rock climbing and more – special workshops
and a lively Shabbat celebration all led by professional staff. Enjoy
time together at your own pace, and make the most of the special
bond that only exists between grandparents and their grandchildren.
Accommodations include hotel-style rooms, meals and snacks.
