Lightweighting Project Team
NACFE is proud to introduce our expert, unbiased core team who will be delivering
a Confidence Report on Lightweighting for HD over the road tractors and trailers.
Andrew Halonen Bio
Andrew Halonen owns Mayflower Consulting, and offers strategic marketing and business development
services to high tech clients. His passion is lightweight materials for transportation. Andrew earned a
BS Mechanical Engineering degree from Michigan Technological University, and during college, he interned at
Ford Motor Company and 3M Company. Upon graduation, he joined 3M and worked there for 8 years. A
notable project was a research study on the opportunity for a premium lightweight material known as metal
matrix composites (MMC). Andrew was on a team of three who interviewed automotive OEM's, Tier
suppliers on the process & opportunity for MMC's, as well as their appetite for weight reduction. This was in
the late 90's. There was not a strong appetite for weight savings, yet their answers today would have been
much different with the CAFE requirements. Andrew then moved to an engineering company where he lead
the advanced materials group, working on heavy vehicle (military and heavy truck) light-weighting efforts,
largely related to high strength aluminum and aluminum composites. In 2009, he started the consultancy
and focuses on research, sales and marketing of lightweight materials. Andrew is an OEM Off-Highway
Magazine Editorial Advisory Board member and a regular contributor to the off-highway equipment
manufacturer industry. Andrew has a number of publications on the topic of light-weighting.
