Happiness Advantage…
Happiness, is it just an elusive dream? Not
according to happiness experts.
Shawn Achor (2011) a Harvard
Psychologist claims that thinking, “If I can
work harder, I will be more successful, then
I’ll be happier…” is all-wrong. It appears
that every time we experience success,
the goalposts move. For example, if you
have good grades now, you can get better
grades… You achieve the sales target,
higher targets are set… You have a good
job, now you have to get a better job.
Happiness is always on the other side of
success. Hence our brain never gets there.
Happiness is “pushed over the cognizant
horizon.” We have to be successful to be
happy.
According to Achor, (2011) our brains work
in the opposite way. By raising the level of
happiness “in the present” the brain works
significantly better than when the brain is
negative, neutral or stressed. Intelligence,
creativity and energy levels rise when the
brain is in a “positive state.” A positive
brain is 35% more productive and 19%
faster and more accurate. Lyubomirsky
(2005) describes a positive brain effect as a
“Happiness Advantage.”
Feelings of wellbeing/happiness floods our
brain with “dopamine.” Dopamine has two
functions, 1. It makes us happy and 2. It
opens all the learning centers in the brain
allowing the individual to adapt to the
surroundings in a different way.
Achor (2011) claims that to achieve what
the brain is capable of we need to reverse
the thinking that, “by working harder, I will
be more successful, then I’ll be happier.”
Train the brain to be more positive, happy
in the “present”. He provides 5 things to
do each day to train the brain to be more
positive.
1. Listing 3 new things that you are grateful
for each day. (Emmons & McCullough
2003). By listing 3 new things each day
that you are grateful for the brain pattern
changes from searching for the negative to
searching for the positive.
2. Journaling one positive experience in the
past 24 hours. The process of journaling
allows the brain to re-live the positive experience. (Sletcher and Pennebaker 2006)
happiness and success, and in doing so,
not only create ripples of positivity, but a
real revolution.”
Is Happiness just an elusive dream pushed
over the cognizant horizon? Maybe not…
Apostle Paul wrote these words in a
Roman prison, (a formula for true happiness) that have stood the test of time …
“Finally, friends, whatever things are true,
whatever things are noble, whatever things
are just, whatever things are pure, whatever
things are lovely, whatever things are of
good report, if there is any virtue and if there
is anything praiseworthy—meditate on
these things”. Philippians 4:8
3. Exercising teaches the brain that behavior matters. (Babyak et al 2000)
4. (Prayer)/Meditating, the process slows
the brain from the overactive ADHD world
that we live in where we try to do multiple
tasks all at once. This allows the brain to
focus on the task at hand. (Dweck, 2007)
5. Consciously doing random acts of
kindness. It as easy as sending a positive
email, praising or thanking someone in
your social support group ie family, school,
neighbourhood. (Lyubomirsky, 2005)
Achor (2011) claims that “by doing these
activities and by training your brain just
like we train our bodies, what we’ve found
is we can reverse the formula for

Family Fiesta
In the tradition of an authentic Fiesta
NCC created an atmosphere which

Pamper packs
Last Friday Ella M (ADRA Ambassador), Rebecca (ADRA
Director), Phil (Victorian Youth Director for Seventh-day
Adventist Church) and a group of NCC students packaged up
16 pamper packs for Asher House as part of our Week of
Worship service project.
We estimate that the value of donated pamper items exceeded
$500 and we want to say a big thank you to our school community
for being generous givers for this very worthy ministry.
If you are interested in any volunteer
opportunities or how you can offer further support to Asher
House please contact Rebecca at ADRA.

Breakfast for the
Year 3 class
The year 9 food technology class has been studying breakfasts in
term 1. They were given a design brief to promote the importance
of eating breakfast to younger students as part of a healthy eating
pattern.
The year 9’s then had to collaborate to design and produce a
healthy breakfast for the year 3 class, working with the survey they
administered prior to their production. The year 3’s enjoyed their
breakfast and had hoped that there could have been more banana
smoothies and mini pizzas.
Lower Primary Combined Sports Day
The day began with a slip, slop and a slap of shirts, sunscreen and hats as we headed off to Bill Sewart
Athletics Track for our combined lower primary sports day.
It was a beautiful day to be outdoors and our students showed excellent sportsmanship in all events. We would
like to say a special thank you to Mrs. Bos-Kabogo for all her hard work and also to our teachers and parent
helpers. We couldn’t do this without your commitment and dedication.
