We have been successfully
appointed to provide ‘active network
infrastructure solutions and switches’
as part of Lewisham Borough
Council’s ICT Framework for
Education (LIFE 2014). This means
we are an approved supplier to source,
supply and install active network
infrastructure across all London Boroughs.
It is a great achievement for NCS Technology and after a lengthy tender
process, we are delighted to have the opportunity to work closely with
Lewisham and London schools through the framework.
We are proud to be sponsors of Naace (The National Association for all
those interested in Education.)
Naace is a great community for schools, teachers and for those who work in the
education industry and we are proud to be sponsoring the association.
As part of our partnership with Naace, we
have also been promoting RiskIT week which
is a scheduled period in the school calendar
where staff are encouraged to use ICT
hardware and software that they have
not used before to deliver a lesson.
What has your school done for RiskIT week?
NEW power and data installation at
Royal Greenwich UTC
We are delighted to share a testimonial obtained from a recent IT power
and data installation at Royal Greenwich UTC. Our NCS Engineers
on-site worked with their apprentice Charlie Richardson who is
currently obtaining his NVQ Level 3.
NCS Infrastructure Special
HP Networking upgrade
We are proud to share
our latest HP case study
for Maidstone Grammar
School.
See how we have
upgraded the school’s
Ethernet backbone to 10
GbEs to improve the
functionality of their
Wireless BYOD, IP
Telephony and IP Video
Security.
Maidstone Grammar School has had an excellent long standing relationship with
NCS stretching back 20 years.
Stephen Moores, Information Systems Manager of Maidstone Grammar School
explains why NCS were chosen for the installation: “The work is always completed
to a high standard and NCS will regularly work around our teaching times to
complete projects at times that are easier for us to work with. No supplier is 100%
perfect so when something has not gone quite to plan, NCS have stepped up to the
mark and have always managed the situation to a very satisfactory solution.”
“I really appreciate NCS Technology giving me the opportunity to work along side
Keith, Dean, Billy and Paul to allow me to gather evidence for my NVQ Level 3
Electrical portfolio. I enjoyed working with the NCS engineers, they taught me
a wide range of skills not just in the electrical side of things but also in general
building.
They were very knowledgeable and each brought their own way of doing things to
the table, this has helped my learning to see the variety of ways to carry out the work
or to tackle a problem. The work carried out was the installation of power and data
circuits, dado trunking and a fibre optic cabinet.”
Charlie Richardson, Apprentice, Royal Greenwich UTC
Maidstone Grammar School has historically used a HP Procurve solution and
they were very happy to continue with this product line as offered the school great
value for money and performance.
The HP Procurve range allowed the school to continue to use their existing
network monitoring solution (Procurve Manager) without having to invest in a
new, expensive software update on top of the outlay for switching hardware.
The infrastructure upgrade on Maidstone Grammar School’s backbone has
enabled the deployment of a ‘BYOD’ scheme in the school and it has removed
previous bottlenecks that would have impeded the scheme and any future
expansion of the network.

HP; the facts. We are commonly asked why the need to install a HP 10 Gb
network, here is our answer...
NCS Infrastructure Special
HP Networking upgrades from NCS Technology
Can your Network Infrastructure
cope? Did you know...
Today’s computer networks are expected to
deal with more than just file sharing and web
browsing. Voice traffic, video streaming, IP
security and video surveillance to name just a
few examples. These all need to run side by side
on your computer network!
Using your existing infrastructure, NCS could
provide a 10 Gigabit upgrade with HP Networking.
In most cases the network backbone speed is 1
Gbps or less, this could be upgraded to
10Gbps with minimal disruption. This would give a
10-fold enhancement to the network bandwidth
10 Gigabit Ethernet (10 GbE) could be deployed
using existing fibre optic cabling, meaning
minimal infrastructure cost with maximum
performance benefit
NCS recommend HP Networking due to the
performance, proven reliability and it’s unique
‘Lifetime Warranty’
A 10GbE HP Installation deployed back in 2007
by NCS is still going strong, despite being
estimated to last between 3 and 5 years
Impact of the new 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard
The introduction of the 802.11ac wireless network standard
could impact heavily on your network performance.
With wireless connection speeds set to overtake
that of wired connections, there has never been a
more important time to consider a 10 Gigabit
network upgrade
10 Gigabit Ethernet (10 GbE)
10GbE gives increased speed and bandwidth on the network; higher
speeds alleviate bottlenecks whilst guaranteeing quality of service
which is critical for voice or video streams
10GbE helps to address key initiatives such as BYOD, Unified
Communications, mobility and network security. This can have a
number of business and IT benefits such as increased productivity,
reliability, better customer service and future proofing
Recent installation; HP upgrade by NCS
Maidstone Grammar School upgraded their Ethernet backbone to
10GbE to improve the functionality of Wireless BYOD, IP Telephony
and IP Video Security
“Without a sound foundation to the schools
network, we were not in a position to be able to
look at newer technologies. This is no longer a
restriction we have to worry about.”
Stephen Moores, Maidstone Grammar School

In simplistic terms, the benefits of 10Gb are that users on the network will experience faster response times from applications and
databases as well as other networked devices. This can have a number of business and IT benefits like increased productivity, reliability,
better customer service, future proofing etc. As our leaflet details, having 10Gb uplinks on a network is seen as essential to provide
good levels of services especially when using the latest standard of wireless and bandwidth intensive applications.

NCS were asked to supply and install 20 Wi-Fi APs across 20 residential
care homes and to source a cloud based management system to help
with remote Wi-Fi management.
The solution was to install a XIRRUS Cloud
Management portal, along with XIRRUS wireless
APs. The benefits of such a solution has been endless,
residents can now use their own devices to access the
internet; meaning there is a better digital inclusion
and increased social engagement and communication
between residents and families.
Adam Beadle, ICT Technical Support Analyst explains why NCS were chosen for
the installation: “From site survey to install everyone was knowledgeable, helpful
and polite, the work as always was carried out quickly, safely and with the normal
tidiness that NCS are renowned for.” Take a read of our case study in full on our
