Laudable
legal triumph
n a decision of enormous significance for Tamilnadu and indeed
for politics in the rest of India, the Karnataka High Court acquitted J Jayalalithaa of all charges in the disproportionate assets case
against her. It is verily a triumph of her karmic equanimity and
poised positivity in the face of concerted campaigns. And it is a victory duly delivered in the court of law, which makes it all the more
laudable. And politically speaking, this is the most sensational of
all comebacks and all those who had written her political obituary
have been proved hasty and wrong.
On to the facts of the verdict. Justice C R Kumaraswamy, not only
acquitted Jayalalithaa and three others in the case, but also specifically said in his order: ‘Litigation made by persons who advance the
political gain and to settle the scores under the guise to fight a legal
battle should not be entertained.’ Forget the sentence construction,
the fact of the matter is Justice Kumaraswamy also felt that the case
was foisted on her and others for political motive. It is a charge that
Jayalalithaa has been making from day one. It now redounds to her
credit that the High Court also felt that way.
It is pertinent to note that the HC said there was no ‘acceptable
evidence’ to point out that Jayalalithaa spent Rs 3 crore on her foster
son’s wedding. ‘Just because Accused No.1 was Chief Minister at that
time, we cannot saddle all the marriage expenses on her part...Arriving
at Rs.3,00,00,000/- towards marriage expenses and fixing liability of
Rs.3,00,00,000/- to A-1 (Jayalalithaa) alone is not proper. It also removed
‘the exaggerated value of cost of construction’ from her income.
‘If we remove the exaggerated value of cost of construction and
marriage expenses, the assets will work out at Rs. 37,59,02,466. The
total income of the accused, firms and companies is Rs. 34,76,65,654.
Lack of proportion amount is Rs. 2,82,36,812. The percentage of
disproportionate assets is 8.12 per cent,’ Kumaraswamy said knocking the stuff out of the case against Jayalalithaa.
In essence, the High Court concluded that the prosecution and trial
court had erred by underestimating Jayalalithaa’s actual income and
overestimating her expenditure on the marriage of her foster son
and on property that was allegedly owned by others on a benami
basis. After recalculating her income and expenditure, the HC concluded that the quantum of disproportionate assets in her possession
amounted to only 8.12 per cent of her income, a figure below the 10
per cent threshold for conviction.
Away from the legalities, Jayalalithaa has once again proved that
people who write her off do so only at their own peril. Ever since
the verdict of the trial court in September, she had maintained a stoic
silence, Knowing her time will come, she removed herself from
the scene with admirable phlegmatism. It was the proverbial grace
under pressure. Now it has all paid dividends. Jayalalithaa has come
out with her dignity intact and her political reputation enhanced. As
she rightly pointed out in her typical succinct reaction ‘...the verdict
paved way for me to emerge like tested pure gold,’ Jayalalithaa was
typically spot on. It is said that the verdict acquitting her ran to 916
pages, and make no mistake ‘916’, in bullion markets, indeed represents pure gold. No doubt, Jayalalithaa is destiny’s favourite child.
negligence by the youngsters
themselves.
Inspector of Police, Chandru said,
‘Though Raja and Vicky claim that
Selvam rode the bike at the time of
accident, police feel that Vicky, the
owner of the bike rode it’.
The allegations that the men
lost balance and fell from the twowheeler after getting hit by the
police, is also not true, he said,
adding that they had only followed
them in a jeep.
Also, the youngsters are yet to
submit their driving license.
‘They were driving fast, they did not
have a license, they violated traffic
rules and did not stop when policemen asked them to’, the Inspector
stated.
Meanwhile, residents of K K
Nagar say that it is routine for the
day after AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa
was acquitted in the disproportionate assets case,
senior Ministers and senior party functionaries today
vied with each other to express their happiness for
‘Amma’, in the form of posters and flex banners across
the city.
Meanwhile, speculation grew as to when the
AIADMK MLAs would meet and when Jayalalithaa
would return as the Chief Minister. It is learnt that
a meeting of AIADMK MLAs would be held in the
city tomorrow, where a formal decision on electing Jayalalithaa as the Legislative party leader
would be taken.
Following this, Chief Minister O Panneerselvam would
submit his resignation, and the decision of AIADMK
MLAs would be conveyed to the Governor, paving way
for Jayalalithaa coming back to the top seat.
Sources said Jayalalithaa could be sworn in on 17
May. However, there was no confirmation of the date
with several dates floating around.
Meanwhile, as Narendra Modi government completes one year in office, BJP today lauded the Prime
Minister’s efforts towards cooperative federalism and
setting in motion a strategy for inclusive development
and hoped it will succeed in fulfilling promises made
to the people.
Another quake,
another shock
q Nepal, India struck by powerful earthquake again
q Rajnath Singh chairs crucial meeting
New Delhi, May 12:
Nepal was today hit by another strong
earthquake, sending people in the capital
Kathmandu rushing out on to the streets
just weeks after a devastating quake killed
more than 8,000 people and destroyed
hundreds of thousands of homes.
The US Geological Survey initially
said the quake had a magnitude of
7.1 and struck 42 miles (68km) west
of the town of Namche Bazaar, close
to Mount Everest. The quake was
upgraded to a magnitude of 7.4 minutes later. Shockwaves were felt as
far away as Delhi, West Bengal and
several parts of north India.
The quake’s epicentre was close to
Everest base camp, 83km (52 miles)
east of Kathmandu, which was evacuated after an avalanche triggered by
the 25 April quake killed 18 climbers.
‘The quake measured 7.4 on richter

Nepal,’ an IMD official said.
Immediately after the quake at around
12:35 pm, panic- stricken people were
seen rushing out of buildings in Delhi.
Metro services were immediately
put on restricted mode with speeds
being slowed down.
Authorities said in many areas,
high-rise buildings are being vacated.
The quake was felt as far as Afghanistan where it was measured 6.9
on the richter scale.
Tremors were felt in some parts of Chennai city. The impact was felt in
Kodambakkam and Pattinapakkam areas. ‘I felt slight tremors around noon,’
Senthilvel, a private sector employee in Kodambakkam locality, said. According to reports, some other areas in the city also felt the tremors.
Late last month, the earthquake that devastated parts of Nepal had its
echo in Chennai, too, with people in areas such as Nandanam, Guindy,
Santhome and Kodambakkam running out of houses and offices, claiming the buildings ‘shook slightly’.
The tremors were recorded by seismological observatory at Salem.
Meteorological officials at the India Meteorological Department’s seismic
observatory said it was possible that tremors from an earthquake on a
Richter scale of 7.9 could be felt mildly in a city located so far away from
the epicentre as Chennai.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Rajnath
Singh said the that Ministry was collectiong details and information about
any damage from earthquake in India,
he said there is no need to panic and
NDRF is on alert.

portionate assets case.
The acquittal triggered celebrations by
AIADMK supporters all across Tamilnadu, with wishes pouring in on her from
various quarters. The charges were not
‘sustainable’, Justice C R Kumaraswamy
said in the much-awaited verdict.
The value of disproportionate assets
was Rs. 2.82 crore and this value
was not enough to convict them on
charges of corruption, said Justice
Kumaraswamy in his verdict while
disagreeing with the verdict of the
Special Court, which had computed
the value of DA at Rs 53.6 crore.
‘It is not a victory for me but a victory
for justice,’ said Jayalalithaa, while
reacting to the judgement.
‘I am immensely satisfied with the
verdict... Verdict paved way for me
to emerge like tested pure gold,’ said
Jayalalithaa. She warned her political
opponents to end their conspiracies
against her and thanked the partymen
and people who prayed for her.

NJAC issue:
SC rejects
Centre’s plea
New Delhi, May 12:
The Supreme Court on Tuesday
rejected the Centre’s preliminary
plea that the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC)
issue be heard by a larger bench
of 9 or 11 judges. A c c o r d i n g t o
PTI, the apex court also ruled
that the arguments on petitions challenging NJAC Act will
c o n t i nue before the five-judge
bench.
The ruling comes a day after the
apex court made it clear that it
would first decide on the issue of
referring the challenge to the new
system of appointment of judges
to a larger bench of nine or eleven
judges and then go into the merits
of the case.
It also said it would pass an order
on appointment of additional judges of High Court, whose tenure
was ending, because the National
Judicial Appointments Commission was not in place yet. ‘We all
have tentatively agreed on this
that we will first decide the issue
of reference (to a larger bench)
and then take a call on the entire
matter,’ a five judge Constitution
Bench headed by Justice J S Khehar said on Monday.
10-month NDA govt better
than 10 years of UPA: Modi
New Delhi, May 12:
Days before the BJP-led National
Democratic Alliance government is set
to complete its first year in office, Prime
Minister Narendra Modi today exalted the
progress achieved by his government
since it assumed power in May 2014.
During the BJP Parliamentary Party
meeting, which began at 9:30 am,
he compared the achievements of
his government with the previous
Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government. The work done by
our government in 10 months is better
than that by the UPA government in
10 years, said Modi.
Reiterating the government’s stance
on the issue of black money, the PM
said he was satisfied with stringent
laws made in this regard.
Praising the benefit people got
from the social security schemes
his government launched, the PM
also pointed out that a year old NDA
government worked more than the
UPA government in the department
of foreign relations too.
Addressing the media after the
BJP Parliamentary Party meeting,
Union Minister of State for Minorities
Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said
the meeting discussed the work the
government did in the first year of its
inception.
Hailing the government for improving foreign relations, the PM said only
the NDA government is capable of
developing good ties with Pakistan.
Naqvi also said it was the NDA government which solved issues with
India’s neighbouring countries like
Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
Modi also said that India helped
Nepal and Maldives during their time
of crisis, added Naqvi.
The PM also urged parliamentarians to give the details of the work
they did to the people of this country.

Residents are calling for efforts to ease trafc

ways a premium

and this puts other
motorists in a spot of
bother. He suggested that buses exiting the terminus
can be allowed to
reach the junction of Reddy Street
and MTH Road, while buses bound for Villivakkam bus terminus
can be allowed to enter through Sivan Koil East Mada Street
and Sivan Koil West Mada Street instead of Reddy Street’s
intersection with MTH Road.
As of now, buses use Reddy Street to enter and leave the
terminus, which contributes to the trafc snarls.
R Vaidyanathan, a resident of Reddy Street said the system
which was in practice some two or three years ago can be
reintroduced.
He also pointed out that four-wheelers can be diverted to use
the street behind the bus terminus and area around Sivan Koil
Tank, which could lessen the trafc on Reddy Street.
If such steps are taken, minor mishaps and quarrels among
motorists would be reduced.

NT Bureau
Chennai, May 12:
Giving a clean chit to AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa, the Karnataka High Court on Monday held that
the judgement and finding recorded
by the trial court convicting her and
three others suffers from infirmity and
it is not sustainable in law.
Acquitting Jayalalithaa and three
others of ‘all the charges levelled
against them’, the single bench
judge Justice C R Kumaraswamy
set aside the trial court’s conviction,
allowing the criminal appeals filed by
the four convicts.
In his 916-page judgement, Justice
Kumaraswamy also quashed the
order of the trial court relating to confiscation of the properties both movable and immovable. ‘Taking into
consideration overall circumstances
and material placed on record, in my
view, the judgement and finding recorded by the trial court suffers from
infirmity and it is not sustainable in
law,’ the judge said in a verdict that
has paved the way for Jayalalithaa
to return to Chief Ministership.
On disproportionate assets, the
judge held that ‘it is relatively small.
In the instant case, the disproportionate asset is less than 10 per cent
and it is within permissible limit.’
In his 916-page judgement, Justice
Kumaraswamy also quashed the order of
the trial court relating to confiscation of the
properties both movable and immovable
‘Therefore, the accused are entitled to acquittal. When the principal
accused (Jayalalithaa) has been
acquitted, the other accused, who
have played a lesser role, are also
entitled to acquittal,’ the court said.
The judge said it is a well-settled
law that according to the Krishnanand Agnihotri case, when there is
disproportionate asset to the extent
of 10 per cent, the accused are entitled to acquittal.
The margin of 10 to 20 per cent
of the disproportionate assets has
been taken as a permissible limit,
taking into consideration the inflationary measures. ‘Since the value
of apparels and slippers and others
(of Jayalalithaa) were of ‘insignificant value’, I did not deduct this
amount from the assets of DV & AC
(Directorate of Vigilance and AntiCorruption,’ the judge said.
He held that the prosecution has
mixed up assets of accused, firms
and companies. ‘If we remove
the exaggerated value of cost of
construction and marriage expenses, the assets will work out at
Rs.37,59,02,466’.
‘In this case, the trial court has ignored the Income Tax proceedings
as minimum evidentiary value. The
trial court has not appreciated the
evidence in a proper perspective,’
Justice Kumaraswamy said.
He said though the trial court in
its judgement mentioned that the
accused availed loan by the Indian
Bank, it has not considered the
same as income. Therefore, the
trial court has erred in not considering the loans as income.
Even the valuation though disputed by the defence, the trial court
has failed to examine the evidence
relating to cost of construction at
that relevant time and simply arrived at a conclusion that 20 per
cent of the cost has to be reduced
without appreciating the evidence
placed on record,’ he said.

R Mallika of Pallavaram need not
walk long distances any more to
fetch water. This is because, she
can do so from a tank constructed
at Gandhi Nagar area in Chrompet,
which caters to the water needs of
residents in the locality.
Following complaints and appeals
from residents with regard to water
shortage, Pallavaram Municipality
has built a tank near Durgai Amman
temple in Radha Nagar.
It may be noted that the Municipality
which has 42 Wards and a population of around 2.5 lakh sources water
from Metrowater (Pallavaram) and
TWAD (Chrompet). Sources said that
55 lakh litres of water is necessary to
meet the crisis.
It may be recalled that residents were
facing a tough time due to the inadequate water supply as an average of
20 lakh litres only supplied each day.
‘This is an increase in demand for water in the neighbourhood. Water made
available from Palar and TWAD has
become very irregular, which made
residents feel the pinch,’ said Harish,
a long-time resident of Nehru Nagar.
The Rs five lakh project which was
completed some two weeks ago has
become a prime source of water supply now. ‘Not just residents of Radha
Nagar, but those in nearby areas are
benefited too as more than 3,000
litres a day is available,’ said sources

Chennai, May 12:
There is a growing demand for
safety officers (SO) in engineering
plants and at construction sites
these days and the number is
expected to double in the coming
years, said M V Thomas, director of
TUV Rheinland NIFE, a vocational
training institute with centres in over
a 100 places in India.
He said, ‘We have already seen a demand for them steadily increasing over
the years. Less than a decade ago, we
had less than a 1,000 students at our
school. The last two years have seen
over 5,000 to 6,000 students enrolled
and graduating. This number is expected to double in the coming years.’
The institute recently received the
National Skill Development Corporation’s recognition for its courses.
‘The Construction Workers’ Safety Act
is being implemented very strictly now.
We have seen our students constantly
being placed in major construction
companies because a construction
site can no longer operate wiithout a
qualified safety officer,’ Thomas said.
And now, newly graduated safety
officers earn salaries in excess of
Rs 25,000 a month within a year at
their jobs. Those who go abroad earn
even more.
‘This may not sound very high,
atleast for those who work in India.
But considering the profile of the students, it is substantial,’ Thomas said.
The courses offered by TUV Rheinland NIFE span across Fire Safety
and Lift Technology, which run for a
year, and Fibre Optics and Inventory
and Stores, which run for four months.
The eligibility for both courses is
just a Class 10 pass certificate as per
NSDC rules. The fee is Rs 80,000 for
Fire Safety and Lift Technology and
Rs 40,000, for the other two.
Thomas said that the Gulf Cooperation Council countries (Middle East)
have some of the largest budgets
for safety officers presently and said
‘some 25 per cent of our students are
currently working in this region.’
more would help overcome water
problems.
‘Many areas in Hasthinapuram, Pallavaram and Chitlapakkam get water
supply only once in 10 days. Poor
and middle-class people often find
it difficult to purchase from private
water suppliers,’ said Neeraja, a resident of MGR Street, Hasthinapuram.
The erection plant works as a minipower pump system and one-third
of the water drawn from the underground sources would go waste.
‘The waste water will again be recycled to multiple times. A pump system
installed can purify it,’ said assistant
engineer at Pallavaram Municipality
Seenuvasan.
When the Municipal Commissioner
Sivasubramanium was contacted,
he said that steps would be taken to
construct more tanks in the locality.
‘Tanks will be constructed in those areas where poor people live. It would
be constructed in four places - Zamin
Pallavaram, Keelkattalai, Hasthinapuram and Nemilicherry,’ he said.

Emergency responders searched
through splintered wreckage after
a line of tornadoes battered several
small communities in Texas and Arkansas, killing at least five people.
A couple, in their late 20s or early
30s, died when a twister hit their
mobile home late Sunday in the Arkansas town of Nashville.
Michael and Melissa Mooneyhan
were trying to protect their daughter
when the parents’ trailer flipped over

The girl, who is about 18 months

later released to relatives.
In neighboring Texas, a tornado

damaging about 30 percent of the

Authorities confirmed at least two

Uninor CFO steps down
New Delhi, May 12 (PTI):
Uninor’s chief financial officer Vivek Anand has resigned, about a year
after joining the company. Anand had joined Uninor in May 2014 after its
then CFO Prasoon Sinha was elevated to handle Group Finance function
at headquarters in Oslo. ‘Uninor’s chief financial officer Vivek Anand has
decided to pursue his future aspirations outside of our company. Vivek
has been instrumental in streamlining the finance deliveries for Uninor’,
the company said in response to an e-mail query.
Before joining Uninor, Anand was chief finance officer at Unilever Bangladesh. Last week, Norwegian telecom company Telenor’s Indian arm Uninor
had posted an operating loss of about Rs 127 crore in the first quarter ended
31 March, 2015. The company had posted a profit of about Rs 1,561 crore
a year ago due to refund of licence fee to the tune of Rs 1,660 crore from
the Indian government.
PIO appointed SoftBank President
Tokyo/New Delhi, May 12 (PTI):
Indian-origin Nikesh Arora was on Monday appointed as president and COO of
Japan’s SoftBank and may become the next CEO, as the telecom major expands
its presence in overseas market including India. Arora will assume his new role on
19 June. Speaking at the company’s earnings conference, CEO Masayoshi Son
said the former Google executive is a ‘strong candidate’ to lead the company in
future, ‘He’s 10 years younger than me, and he has more abilities than me’, he
said. ‘The last nine months I’ve spent with him have made me sure of that...
Nikesh and I will lead SoftBank in its second stage’, he said.
Son added that Arora’s experience and insight on the global Internet
business model will help SoftBank grow further.
Arora joins the ranks of Pepsico Indra Nooyi, Microsoft’s Satya Nadella,
Mastercard’s Ajay Banga and Adobe’s Shantanu Narayen, the Indian-origin
business leaders heading global giants.
Over the top trouble
New Delhi, May 12 (PTI):
Bringing over-the-top (OTT) players
like WhatsApp and Skype under a
licensing regime will result in ‘negative unforeseen consequences’ for
technology start-ups and ecosystem,
internet service providers have said.
‘The hasty imposition of an additional regulatory framework on internet
in India, without full consideration of
its implications for the Indian digital
economy, is almost certain to result
in negative unforeseen consequences
for internet-based innovation and the
still nascent internet startup ecosystem in India’, industry body IAMAI said
in its counter-comments submitted
to TRAI.
Telecom Regulatory Authority of
India (TRAI) on 27 March came out
with a consultation paper on Net Neutrality with 24 April and 8 May as the
last day for submission of comments
and counter comments, respectively.
The regulator received over 10
lakh comments from various telecom
firms, associations and individuals.
It received 42 counter-comments
from industry lobbies including COAI,
NASSCOM, IAMAI and operators including Vodafone, MTNL and RCOM
apart from individuals.
TRAI, which is examining the comments, is yet to give its final recommendations on the Net Neutrality.
In its comments, GSM telecom
operators lobby COAI said there
is a need to evolve the regulatory
framework for OTT communications
Eastern eyes on India
Hanoi, May 12 (PTI):
Vietnam, which is fast-emerging
as a major tourist destination in the
world, is eyeing India as a potential
market to attract visitors to its scenic
locations and the treasure trove of
war-time history.
‘In 2008, nearly four million tourists visited Vietnam while in 2014,
just within six years the number
had reached eight million’, Vietnam
National Administration of Tourism
Chairman Nguyen Van Tuan told a
delegation of Indian journalists.
India is a potential market for Vietnam in terms of tourism, he said
adding that the bilateral relations between the two nations have always
remained good.
A total of 2.17 lakh Vietnamese tourists including those residing overseas
visited India in 2014 while 54,000 Indian tourists visited Vietnam, Nguyen
told reporters who were here on a
visit to attend the 40th anniversary
of 30-year-longVietnam War and its
reunification.
Vietnam, a strategically-important
Southeast Asian country, has earned
$9 billion from tourism alone.
Moody’s optimistic
on credit conditions
New Delhi, May 12 (PTI):
Rating agency Moody’s on Monday
said credit conditions are likely to
improve for rated Indian corporates
over the next 12-18 months on the
back of upturn in economic activities, government’s reform push and
transmission of monetary easing.
In a report, the global agency said
that over the next 12 to 18 months,
credit conditions are likely to improve
forrated Indian corporates and infrastructure debt issuers in a number of
pro-cyclical industries, such as industrials, transport infrastructure, metals and
automotives.
‘These industries stand to benefit from
an upturn in economic growth, gradual
transmission of monetary easing, weaker
commodity prices and the government’s
pro-growth policy agenda’, it said.
better quality of service’.
He added that the IT infrastructure market will go up
to $2.29 billion in 2018.
Domestic companies will
focus on creating integrated data centres for optimising existing IT assets
and delivering non-stop IT
services to business, the
consultancy said, specifying where it sees the
demand coming from.
It further said the enterprise networking market
will grow 7.02 per cent to
$944 million in 2015 driven
by an increased focus
on mobility and big data
activities and software
defined networking.
Storage modernisation and
consolidation, backup and
recovery, and disaster recovery will result in a 9.23 per
cent growth in the storage
market to $426 million.
However, the servers
segment will be a drag on
the overall IT infrastructure spend and will witness
a 4.77 per cent dip at $658
million, it estimated.

Henriques did it
for us: Warner
SRH captain happy to overcome Miller blitz
Hyderabad, May 12:
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain David Warner heaped praise
on fellow Australian all-rounder
Moises Henriques after the team
posted a nervy five-run win over
the struggling Kings XI Punjab to
edger closer to the play-offs spot
in the IPL 2015.
Speaking after the match against
George Bailey & Co on Monday,
the dashing Australian opener
said, ‘that’s one of the three we
needed to win. We had to be
clinical and work on the Rajasthan
finish.’
He was however in awe of David
Miller, who almost took Kings
XI past the finish line and said,
‘Phenomenal innings from Miller.
He batted fantastic but credit to
Moises Henriques for four overs - 3
for 16. Knowing this ground, 160
was probably par. Credit to the
bowlers for taking early wickets.
We are playing a positive brand of
cricket, we look to build momentum
and make it four
in a row.’
Warner
said he was
dejected to
miss out on a
ton and added,
‘there was a little
bit of an error
in my mind thinking that I could try
and scoop it. It is just not my style
of play and my game. That’s why I
was frustrated. I should have just
backed myself to hit straight. I got
a well executed yorker but it was
my fault I got out the way I did because I was trying something that
I shouldn’t have done. ‘
The losing captain Bailey said,
‘It was extraordinary. We just left
a little too much for him (Miller).
We have plenty of positives in the
last couple of games. We have to
get our starts better. Can’t fault the
effort of the boys.’
Miller, who finally came good
with a solid knock, said, ‘This is
my best knock so far this year
in the IPL. I haven’t really had a
cracker of a season to be honest. I have just been there and
thereabouts with a few good
starts. I am actually feeling really good about my batting at
the moment. I knew just hanging in there would always help
and one big knock will always
be round the corner.

No recall for KP

Kevin Pietersen
London, May 12:
Kevin Pietersen will not
be recalled by England
despite scoring an unbeaten 326 for Surrey,
British media reported
on Monday.
The controversial
right-hander made
the first triple century of his career
to offer a timely
reminder of his talents to new England
cricket director Andrew Strauss.

Murray undecided
about playing in Rome
Rome. May 12:
Andy Murray was reportedly ready
to make a decision on whether to
take part in the Italian Open after
completing the best week of his
career on clay with his first two titles
on the surface.
Murray’s comprehensive 6-3, 6-2
defeat of Spanish ace Rafael Nadal
in the final in Madrid on Sunday
knocked the king of clay down to
seventh on the ATP list, his lowest position in a decade.
Murray and his team were
seriously discussing the pros
and cons of playing in Rome,
after their man won trophies
in Munich and Madrid in the
space of seven days.
Should he decide to play, Murray
will open in the second round against
Jeremy Chardy of France.
The third-ranked Scot could not
have asked for a better French Open
preparation and might not want to risk
either injury or fatigue with Roland
Garros starting in 13 days. It’s a
different story completely for Nadal,
who desperately needs matches and
confidence after going down in front
of his home public to Murray in a Madrid final which did not even extend
to 90 minutes.
Nadal insisted he feels his tennis is
on the right path despite not having
won a spring clay title.
‘I’m already thinking in
Rome, it’s an important
change. You change from
playing with altitude to no
altitude there,’ the Spaniard said.
On court at the ATP and WTA
event, 10th seed Grigor Dimitrov began his week with a
defeat of Pole Jerzy Janowicz 6-3, 7-6 (7/4) while
French 12th seed Gilles Simon put out American Jack Sock 4-6,
7-6 (7/2), 6-3.
American 16th seed John Isner
downed Joao Sousa 7-5, 6-3. German Philipp Kohlschreiber, Munich
runner-up to Murray a week ago,
reached the second round over
American Donald Young 6-4, 6-1.
Gilles Simon
etersen was told he will not be recalled to the England side. Pietersen,
sacked by England last year, batted
for over seven hours against Leicestershire at The Oval. ‘I’m desperate
to play for England again.
That’s what I want to do.
It’s not just numbers, but
how important the timing
is,’ the South-African born
batsman told Sky Sports.
‘The pressure I was under
this morning ... that’s
one of the best innings
I’ve ever played.
‘I knew that I basically
needed to answer and question with
runs and goodness: 326 is a pretty
good argument.’It was Pietersen’s
50th first-class ton and his first county
championship hundred for nearly two
years. He has faced 373 balls, hitting
34 fours and 14 sixes. Pietersen was
sacked by England in February
2014 following the team’s 5-0
Ashes defeat in Australia after
being accused of being a divisive
character in the squad. But the
Cricket
34-year-old said the only thing that
mattered was what the players produced on the field.
‘Personal differences between
personalities have nothing to do with
what the public wants. The public
wants to see England cricket winning. I feel I can add to the England
team doing well this summer,’ he
said.
Pietersen met with former England
captain Strauss, who
has had his own problems with the controversial right-hander, and ECB
chief executive Tom Harrison
on Monday evening.
England’s leading run scorer in all
forms of international cricket was
dropped after sending text messages
about his skipper Strauss to South
Africa players during a test series in
2012. Strauss had to apologise last
year after using an offensive term to
describe Pietersen while working as
a television commentator. He had not
been aware his comments could be
heard live on air.

years yesterday when he appeared in the national T20 super
eights tournament at Faisalabad.
Aamir, whose spot fixing ban
ends in September that will
make him eligible to play for
Pakistan again, picked
up two wickets for 15
runs in 2.1 overs while
playing for the Rawalpindi
Rams against Abbotabad
Falcons.
Aamir, 22, played in the Patrons
Trophy Grade-2 competition for a
private team in March-April but it was
a non-first class tournament.
Aamir suffered a hamstring injury
during the final of the tournament
in which he took 22 wickets in
four games. The International
Cricket Council has given
Aamir special permission
to resume playing domestic
cricket before his five-year
ban ends later this year. ‘It
was a terrific feeling playing
in a big tournament after
so many years,’ Aamir told
reporters.
The Super Eights tournament is
televised live and the winner wins
the right to represent Pakistan in the
Champions League tournament.

played 18 Tests between 1988 and

Late Gomis goal sinks Arsenal
London, May 12:
Arsenal’s hopes of catching Manchester City for second place in the
Premier League suffered a setback
after a late Bafetimbi Gomis header,
verified by goalline technology,
handed Swansea City a 1-0 win at
the Emirates on Monday. Substitute
Gomis struck five minutes from
time, meeting Jefferson Montero’s
cross with a header that crossed
the line before it was scooped out
by keeper David Ospina, the goal
confirmed almost immediately to the
referee by the goalline technology
system.
Frenchman Gomis also scored the
winner when Swansea beat Arsenal
2-1 at home in November.
Arsenal, who
have three
games left to
play, remain on 70
points, three points
behind City who
have two games
left. Manchester
United, in fourth,
have 68 points
Advani takes a swipe
at TOP scheme
New Delhi, May 12 (PTI):
Twelve-time world champion cueist
Pankaj Advani feels the governmentrun TOP Scheme for India’s Olympic
medal hopefuls clearly shows how
sport is treated unequally in the
country.
Advani, who has brought many laurels to the country with his exploits in
snooker and billiards, goes on to say
that India can improve in the world of
sport only if all disciplines are treated
at par.
‘Personally, it is tough to understand our country’s obsession with
Olympics, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. I know they are
big events, I know they come once in
four years, but just because of this it
doesn’t mean they are the be all of
sport. ‘So I feel if you are supporting
sports and sportspersons, don’t have
an event oriented policy,’ Advani told
PTI when asked about TOP Scheme,
which will fund training for select 75
athletes ahead of the Rio Olympics.
Advani further explains his point.
with the top three securing automatic
entry into the Champions League
group stage. United host Arsenal at
Old Trafford on Sunday. ‘We were
a bit unlucky with the goal. There
are a lot of positives. This kind of
game you play 20 times and win
19 times,’ Arsenal manager Arsene
Wenger told Sky Sports.
‘In patches our domination was
top quality. You have to learn from
defeat and we take encouragement
from a defeat like that. Swansea
deserve
credit for
their defensive display but they probably had the fewest passes in our half
of any team here this season.’
Swansea goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski frustrated his former club, the
Poland international making several
good saves in the second half to thwart
the home side. Arsenal, unchanged
for fifth successive game, had rarely
tested Fabianski in a tepid opening
half. It took almost an hour for Arsenal
to muster their first shot on target with
Olivier Giroud shooting straight at
Fabianski.
Hamilton to ink new
deal with Mercedes
Lewis Hamilton
London, May 12:
Lewis Hamilton’s long-awaited
new deal with Mercedes could be
announced at the showcase race of
the Formula One season in Monaco
next week.
Dismissing media reports that the protracted
negotiations had become
deadlocked over money,
the double world champion indicated everything
was on track with
an announcement
imminent.
‘You’ll see it in Monaco -- I will have
some news for you
in Monaco,’ the
Briton told reporters after Sunday’s
Spanish Grand Prix in
Barcelona.
Media reports have indicated that the 30-year-old,
who leads German team
mate Nico Rosberg by 20
points in the championship after five
races, could net more than $40 million a year under the new contract.
Hamilton is out of contract at the end
of this season and the saga of his
negotiations has kept the media busy
since last year, when the talks were
put on hold for him to concentrate on
the title battle.
He told reporters before the Malaysian Grand Prix in March that it was
99.6 per cent done with only
some ‘legal stuff’ remaining.
The BBC reported in March
that Hamilton, who has conducted his own negotiations
with Mercedes, would earn
about the same basic salary
as in his first contract with the
team he joined in 2013.
However other sources indicated
the terms would be more lucrative, to
reflect his success and status.
Hamilton, who won the first of his
two titles with McLaren in 2008, is
already one of the three highest paid
drivers in the sport with Ferrari’s
Sebastian Vettel and McLaren’s
Fernando Alonso reckoned to earn
at least as much.

MPs and functionaries will go to various parts of the country to tell people
about the welfare measures taken for
underprivileged sections and farmers
as part of a week-long ‘Jan Kalyan
Parv’ from 26 May to June .
Union Minister Piyush Goyal said the
party was unanimous in appreciating
Modi’s leadership and hoped government will succeed in fulfilling the
promises made.

WHERE THEY STAND
TEAMS
Warner the batsman,
captain, fan
Hyderabad:
Each time David Warner walks out with a bat in
his hand going through his regular routine of walking to the crease loosening up and swinging his bat
with one hand in a circular motion, you can sense
purpose. It is almost like a time bomb ticking vigourously waiting to explode and create mayhem on the
22 yards.
On Monday night at Hyderabad was one such night
when Warner not just exploded but blew away the
Kings XI Punjab bowlers to all parts of the ground.
This, not before he played out the first over watchfully; the overs to follow were dealt with severity
though.
In the process he became the highest run-scorer of
the tournament and the first one to get to 500 runs
this year. Those numbers are a pointer of his dominance and consistency with the bat. The Sunrisers
are at the top four of the table and with wins in each
passing game are making a statement that they belong. They are leaving no stone unturned to stay in
the hunt for the playoffs. Much credit goes to Warner
who has well and truly led by example and marched
his troops with effectiveness. As his side recorded a
nervy five-run victory over Kings XI Punjab, Warner
spoke to iplt20.com on the way forward for Sunrisers,
his batting and captaincy.
Q: Got tense towards the end, but would you
call it a near perfect win for you?
A: Defending the target, the message to my bowlers was clear and that was early wickets. I did not
want a repeat of the Rajasthan Royals game (SRH
won by seven runs after scoring 201). We have been
so good at death bowling but it seems as though
when we get close to dominating the opposition
we finish off a lit bit slow. We have to work on the
execution of death bowling. When you have 60 odd
runs to play with in 18 balls you should be winning
these games with atleast 15 to 20 runs to spare. But
the bowlers were fantastic tonight. Credit has to go
to Moises Henriques for the way he bowled. It was
a great spell of bowling. Four overs for 16 runs and
three wickets is a phenomenal effort on this pitch.
But some batsmen you don’t want to bowl to as a
bowler is David Miller at the end. His striking of the
ball is fantastic.
Q: You very much looked in the zone to get a
century. Dejected to miss out on a well deserved
ton?
A: It is a bit frustrating. I try to bat as deep as I
could there. There was a little bit of an error in my
mind thinking that I could try and scoop it. It is just
not my style of play and my game. That’s why I was
frustrated. I should have just backed myself to hit
straight. I got a well executed yorker but it was my
fault I got out the way I did because I was
trying something that I shouldn’t have
done.
Q: Leading run-scorer and
consistent in the tournament,
is captaincy one of the reasons
behind
it?
A: Not really. I think I can play with
the freedom
that I do because
me and Shikhar
Dhawan have
been getting off to
a good start. Even
though we lose quick
wickets we still back
our ability. That is our
job; our job is to score runs
and if it comes off it comes
off. If not you can’t rely on
that specific group of the top
order. We all have to keep working
together and at the moment the
middle-order is coming off really
well. They are playing fearless
cricket and that is what we
have asked for from them.
Q: Next you face Royal
Challengers Bangalore
and then there is the AB
factor. Do you think you
almost pulled off an innings similar to his tonight?
A: (Smiles) I am not in the
same category as AB de Villiers. He is a guy that comes
out and gets himself in and then
all of a sudden he just switches
from slow motion to the extreme
rocket or something like that.
Whatever he is eating, we want
some of that. That’s the way he
plays; it is fearless cricket. The
thing is, he is able to do that because his top two are scoring the
runs. It allows your middle order
to play in when your top three are
scoring runs.
Q: Just to put you on a spot, if you
had to pay to watch three players in
international cricket, who would that be?
A: I would pay to watch Mitchell Starc bowl, AB
de Villiers bat and I would say David Miller if he is
batting while chasing. They are three guys I would
definitely pay to watch

Hyderabad:
Dale Steyn has expressed willingness to play one more
World Cup and suggested that he may not be available for
South Africa’s full tour of Bangladesh in July. The South
Africa pace bowler is aware that at 31, his career may
wind up soon and he wants to save his best for all leading
tournaments.
‘At this stage of my career, I’d rather be saving myself to
go and participate in the major tournaments, rather than
wasting the few balls I have left in my career in a Bangladesh match,’ Steyn told Wisden India in an interview.
‘I’d rather go to Bangladesh to help and support future
South African bowlers, and use what is left of the 10,000 or
20,000 deliveries that I have in my body for the big tournament. That’s where I’m at personally. But at the beginning
of my career, I would have done everything. I would have
gone every tournament and to every place. But I’ve done
it all now.’
Steyn admitted that as his career reaches its twilight, he
might no longer be able to continue bowling with the same
intensity throughout. He considers Test cricket to be the
most challenging and wants to play as many as he can
before calling it a day.
‘I love playing Test cricket and I know that my days are
numbered with regards to how many Test matches Im going to have left, so Id prefer to play a lot more Test cricket,’
Steyn said.
Having featured in two 50-over and four T20 WCs, Steyn
believes that it’s better for him to stay fresh. He stressed
on wanting to win a World Cup for South Africa, which has
always been the main agenda on his list.

‘Form matters
not age’ as DD
backs Yuvi
NEW DELHI:
Delhi Daredevils CEO Hemant
Dua has said that it was IPL market
that decided Yuvraj Singh’s price
of Rs 16 crore and the franchise
is fi rmly backing the ageing star
despite his failure to turn the team’s
fortunes in the ongoing eighth edition of the league.
Yuvraj has managed only 205 runs
at a dismal average of 18.63 from 12
games and DD are practically out of
contention for a place in the play-off.
‘I think we talk about Rs 14 croreRs 16 crore but that’s all a market
place. As Yuvraj had rightly said (in
Vizag) that he never asked for that
price. It was a market place,’ DD
CEO Dua told PTI during an interaction where he analysed the team’s
performance in the current season.

A sleeper hit, Pataas revolved around a corrupt policeman who gets changed

Meanwhile, Lawrencce has a few scripts ready for some of the leading

‘I have two scripts ready for superstar Rajinikanth. I’m working on a script for
actor Pawan Kalyan. As soon as I complete it, I intend to go and meet him.
I’m also getting ready with the next part of Kanchana,’ he said.

Variety online. Donnie Yen will reprise his role as Ip and will face off with
Tyson in the film.
Wilson Yip will return as director of the movie, which is due to hit theatres
next year in 3D. The original ‘Ip Man’ became a cult action movie upon its
release in 2008. The first sequel hit the big screen in 2010.
Tyson, 48, has acted in films including ‘The Hangover II’, ‘Scary Movie5’ and
the upcoming ‘Meet The Blacks.’

‘American Idol’
ending with
season 15
The upcoming 15th season of popular
singing talent hunt ‘American Idol’ will
mark the end of the reality TV series.
Fox announced that it had renewed
the ageing singing competition, and the
current judges roster of Jennifer Lopez,
Keith Urban and Harry Connick, Jr will
all return with it - as will long-running
host Ryan Seacrest, said the Hollywood Reporter.
The network did not mince words
in its announcement of the renewal,
confirming No 15 would be the last for
the one-time behemoth and referring to
it as a ‘season-long celebratory event.’
It’s been expected for some time that
this renewal would be Idol’s last, as
the show has seen both its ratings
and relevance fade in an increasingly
crowded landscape.
The current season has generated
stronger critical favour but only averaged a 2.7 rating among adults 18-49
and 10.7 million viewers on Wednesday nights.
