Students from Grande Prairie and surrounding area will gain an understanding and appreciation for duties and responsibilities of specified occupations. The goal of the program is for youth to develop relationships with employers and gain exposure to employment/career prospects with the intent to keep the youth motivated to finish school and pursue post-secondary education in order to gain a life-fulfilling career in an area of interest. Youth will gain the opportunity to: meet other youth be exposed to living in a college dorm learn life-skills while living in the dorm develop employability skills attend and participate in evening recreational youth activities gain the experience of working & being a college student living on campus, thus helping to prepare youth for future educational pursuits. 4 Student Selection Métis, Western Cree First Nations, and urban Aboriginal students may participate in the program. Student selection for these will be based on applications submitted to Rupertsland Institute’s offices in the Peace Region, Western Cree Tribal Council, or GPRC Continuing Education. Students selected for interviews will be based on the following considerations: Submission of a complete application, including all required signatures Attitude Adaptability Academic Progress Interest to Observe and Learn Willingness to Practice Safety Students selected will be required to get approval of their parent or guardian in order to participate in the program. Program Expectations If you are selected for the Aboriginal Student Job Shadow Program you will be representing your family, community and the program partners. Each student selected is expected to follow all requirements of the program: Students will be supervised at ALL TIMES. Students are not allowed to leave anywhere without a supervisor. (For example: if want to get some pop/chips at corner store you need a residence staff with you) You are expected to live in residence from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon. You are expected to participate in all training courses and evening activities. Absolutely no cigarettes, tobacco products, e-cigarettes, drugs or alcohol. Anyone caught doing, or having any substance on them, will be terminated from the program on the spot. No bullying or disrespecting others (person or property). No cell phone use during class or work hours. Everyone including students and residence staff are expected to help with chores (cleaning, cooking, etc). You are expected to participate in the job shadow program from Sunday arrival to Friday departure. This means no leaving with family during the week. 5 Code of Conduct Students will assist in writing the code of conduct so that everyone will have a clear understanding of expectations of this program, themselves, and each other. The code of conduct planning will include: Accountability Flexibility Integrity Quality Respect Teamwork Weekends — From July 10 to August 14: FRIDAYS: Parents/guardians are required to pick up students from GPRC student residence between 5 and 6 pm. SUNDAYS: Parents/guardians are responsible to transport students back to the GPRC student residence between 8 and 9 pm. Transportation To and from worksite Corporate sponsors and GPRC will be responsible for providing youth with transportation to and from the work site. Evening transportation GPRC will provide transportation for recreational activities. 6 Training Allowance and Completion Bonus Each student will receive a training allowance. Accommodations, meals, transportation and leisure activities will be paid by the program. Thus the training allowance is on top of any expenses that the students would have to attend the program. $400 per week for a total of 6 (Six) weeks Students will be paid once per month $400 completion bonus for students that complete the 6 weeks. Students who discontinue the program will not receive the bonus. Work Preparation Training Communication skills, problem solving and conflict resolution skills will be offered during the first week of the program. Team building, self awareness, goal setting, budgeting, health and fitness, resume writing. Safety Training First Aid / CPR WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System H2S Alive 7 Work Experience Credits Students may receive credits for the work experience part of the program. They earn one Work Experience credit for 25 hours of work. A maximum of 15 of these credits may be used for graduation purposes. Up to 10 credits from Work Experience 35 can be used in meeting the grade 12 course requirement for graduation. Accommodations All students are required to stay in the student housing units (even if you live in Grande Prairie or another town). You will need to bring your own towels, sheets, pillows, blankets and toiletries. You will be chaperoned by a supervisor at all times. Food and Meals Students are expected to prepare their own breakfast, and assist with other meals. The food will be provided by the program. Students will pack a healthy lunch for their work-day, this is their responsibility to do this in the morning or the night before. Students will help the residence supervisors prepare dinner upon their daily return from work. Daily Schedule Job Shadow portion of program July 5 to August 14 Students should be at the college by 8:00 p.m. on Sundays and will leave the college by 6:00 p.m. on Fridays. This is an example of a typical day for students: 7:00 a.m. – 7:30 a.m. Breakfast 7:30 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. Travel to worksite 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Job Shadow at worksite 4:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Travel back to GPRC residents 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Supper and free time Can You See Yourself Here…. 8 9 Are You Interested ?
