Kothandaraman Thanks, Dipak Ranjankar (Mr. Sunil’s son) ASK NURSE Dear Nurse Esther, My father is 74 years of age and suffers from Type-2 Diabetes. The problem is that he just can’t stay away from sweets. To make matters worse, he detests all sugar substitutes because they taste artificial. Because of his condition I don’t store any sweet snacks in the house. Recently I found a stack of chocolates and cookies tucked away under his bed, which of course I threw out immediately. But the next day I found the sugar bowl empty! Please tell me what I should do. Thanks, Suma Dear Suma, It is a common misconception that sugar alone will raise your blood sugar levels and lead to the development or worsening of diabetes. In reality, all carbohydrates will raise your blood sugar, but all carbohydrates, including sugar, are permitted in a diabetic diet. The preferred energy source for your brain and muscles is sugar. Sugar is a form of carbohydrate that includes more than just the white, sandy granules you pour into your morning coffee. All carbohydrates are broken down into sugar when they are digested, and they contribute to the overall concentration of sugar in your blood. Therefore, it is more important to monitor the total number of grams of carbohydrates you consume rather than sugar alone. Some sugar occurs naturally in foods, while other sugar is added to foods to give them a sweeter taste. Foods with naturally occurring sugar include milk, fruit and starchy vegetables like peas, corn and potatoes. Although these foods provide sugar, they also provide essential vitamins, minerals and fiber. The sugar they contain is not added. Identify foods with added sugar by examining the nutrition facts label. Added sugars are listed with the ingredients under names like sucrose, corn syrup and raw sugar. Although all sugar contributes to a rise in blood sugar and must be considered in your total carbohydrate intake, it is better to consume foods with no added sugar for maximum health benefits. They can become so depleted that they cannot maintain the stamina to continue caring for others. Don't let this happen to you. Follow these 10 tips to nurture yourself physically, mentally and spiritually every day, even when you are at the bedside of another. 1. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF 4. READ, PRAY OR MEDITATE FOR AT LEAST 15 MINUTES A DAY Eat well-balanced meals. Take a daily multivitamin. Drink six to eight glasses of water a day. Get outdoors. Exercise regularly. Sleep well. Take out some time from your day to read prayer books, helpful magazines and books like Chicken Soup for the Caregiver's Soul to uplift your spirits. If you're religious, seek the counsel of a spiritual leader you trust and respect. 2. TREAT YOURSELF Get treatments for your own aches and pains before they turn into something more serious. 5. LAUGH MORE OFTEN Laugh, reminisce and share stories of happy times. 3. DON'T IGNORE YOUR EMOTIONS 6. ASK FOR HELP Pay attention to your own feelings and emotions, and seek counseling if needed. Vent feelings to trusted family members or friends. Friends, family and religious groups may be eager to assist and are only waiting to be asked and directed. Doing everything yourself deprives others of an opportunity to serve.
