Nikkei
Senior
Gardens
enjoyed a day of celebration,
honoring all the mother’s in the
community, with a special Mother’s
Day Dinner. The evening was filled
with good eats, good company, and
lots of love.
Chef Carlos and the dining services
team constructed a beautiful buffet spread for the guests to enjoy.
The dinner consisted of assorted sashimi, roast beef, teriyaki
salmon, seasonal vegetables, and roasted baby potatoes. To end
the evening, a dessert plate was served to all guests with a red
velvet cupcake and a manju. As a mother’s day treat, all of the
lovely ladies in attendance were presented with a red rose.
Nikkei Senior Gardens is happy that we could host this event
dedicated to honoring Mother’s, but it would not have been a
success without all those in attendance. Thank you to all of our
guests, who were able to join us for a delicious dinner and we hope
you had a delightful time with your loved ones.

your life story. For More information, please contact

Surprising Cause of Depression
in Older Adults
One of the most important factors in treating depression in older
adults is socialization. The main thing you can do to treat or
prevent depression in a loved one is to help them re-engage
with their community, family and social network. This could be
as simple as helping them get back to church or see their
friends, as isolation and depression go hand in hand.
The problem that often occurs and the reason why many seniors
withdraw and begin to show signs of depression can be directly
related to a fear of falling. The fear of injuring themselves while
outside of the home can hold them back from socializing and
staying active, no matter how much they are encouraged. Being
stuck alone, inside the house can cause an older adult to
develop depressed feelings and further remove themselves from
the outside world.
Since falling and depression may not seem directly linked, it
goes unrecognized by many. However, with simple fall
prevention education, one can put their loved one's mind at
ease and allow them to continue their lives, preventing the onset
of depression. Below are a few ways that caregivers can
implement a fall prevention program for their loved one:


Determine if your loved one is a fall risk by asking about
their history with falling.
Conduct a home safety assessment. Identify areas where
modifications can be made to help reduce falls, such as
installation of grab bars in the bathroom and removal of
obstacles in the home that can create hazards.
Create an open dialogue between you and your loved one,
and allow them to confide in you regarding their fears.
Provide them with ways to combat their fear of falling, such
as test walks to desired destinations, and encouraging them
to exercise in order to strengthen their legs and increase
their endurance.
Currently at Nikkei Senior Gardens we offer fall prevention
assistance that include:
 Fall prevention and safety assessments.
 Exercise programs including Tai Chi Classes. Research has
shown that performing Tai Chi, a slow and gentle form of
exercise, can greatly improve strength, endurance and
balance without worsening existing impairments.
 A review of Vitamin D levels as many older adults that are
deficient in Vitamin D can suffer from muscle weakness and
pain. Proper Vitamin D levels improve strength and helps
with balance.
Through pro-active measures, we can significantly increase the
quality of life for the aging adults in our communities.

Super Senior Luncheon
at Crossway Church
Dr. Bob, Tami, Anne, and Sue L.
Janet, Atsie and Ted
On May 2, 2015, residents attended the Super
Senior Luncheon at Crossway Church, just down the
street from Nikkei Senior Gardens. Every year, the
Luncheon has a special theme, this year, the theme
was Japan. Guests were encouraged to wear Hapi
coats and kimonos, and other Japanese accessories,
while they enjoyed their bento box lunches.
Along with good food and good company, came fun
games and more. From Japanese dancing to singing
old Japanese classic songs, everyone had a great time!
Thank you Crossway Church for hosting such a
wonderful event!

Not to be outdone, Resident
