Convention Theme: NJHA – Race for the Roses

Race for the Roses at 80th Convention – Alexia Gegare – NJHA President
Hello All and Welcome to Lexington, Kentucky! My name is Lexi Gegare and I have the honor of serving as your National
President. The NJHA Officer team recently returned from a wonderful weekend of planning the 80 th NJHA convention being held at the
Clarion hotel. It will make a perfect home base for our convention in Lexington, Kentucky. It’s located in Kentucky’s Bluegrass Region and
full of southern hospitality. The officer team found the rooms to be comfortable. All the rooms have flat screen TVs equipped with satellite
TV and coffee makers. Some rooms also include microwaves, refrigerators and sofa sleepers. There is also free wifi throughout the hotel.
The neat part about this hotel is the Fun Dome! They have a giant sparkling pool and a huge hot tub. Get your blood pumping in their
fitness center, and then enjoy the sauna. Have a table tennis or horseshoe competition, or shoot some hoops on the indoor basketball court.
Test your high-speed driving skills in the video arcade or show off your dancing skills on Dance Revolution. The Fun Dome is going to be a
great place to hang out with old friends and meet new ones.
No need to worry about breakfast this year. The hotel has a complimentary hot breakfast buffet running every morning 6:3010:00am in the Cortland’s Southern Kitchen attached to the hotel. They are also open for lunch and dinner. We enjoyed scrambled eggs,
bacon/sausage, hash browns/country fried potatoes, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, waffles, bagels, toast, cereal, an assortment of juice and
coffee.
One thing to keep in mind, we will be in Lexington during some fall horse events, so please book your rooms before the NJHA
blocked rooms expire or it may be tough to get a room and if you would like your states rooms together, please express that during the

The Clarion hotel is easy to get to as it is right off of I-75. There is a free airport shuttle from the Bluegrass Airport (LEX). There
are no places to eat within walking distance, but not to worry as convention registration will cover all meals except for Saturdays’ lunch. I
am looking forward to an exciting convention. Your officer team has been working hard to plan an awesome convention you won’t want to
miss. Be prepared to learn new things, meet new friends, and connect with old ones and Race for the Roses at the 80th NJHA National
Convention in Lexington, Kentucky.

What is a YC? – Brooke Bukowski – NJHA Vice President
Youth coordinators play an important role in helping convention run smooth each year. They are youth helpers who volunteer to
be bus monitors on tour days, room monitors for contests, part of flag ceremonies, and any other duties that might be asked of them during
convention.
We are always welcoming new and excited members of NJHA to be YCs at convention. This year we will be doing a series of fun,
high energy workshops to help you get to know your fellow YCs. Throughout the year YCs will assist officers in writing articles, and helping
us spread the word about what all NJHA has to offer. In Lexington expect to have a lot of fun and quite possibly a little pool party!
Our Lovely Host State! – Grace Manzer – NJHA Secretary
Our host state for this year’s NJHA National convention is the beautiful bluegrass state! Kentucky is known as the bluegrass state
because bluegrass is a common grass in horse pastures and Kentucky is the home of horse country. Known as the horse capital of the world,
Lexington is the center of thoroughbred horse industry internationally. While driving through the magnificent state is isn’t easy miss the
huge horse farms that line the roads. These farms aren’t necessarily thoroughbred farms; Kentucky has several working horse farms as
well.
On top of being a wonderland for a horse fanatic, Kentucky is also rich with history. Founded by Daniel Boone, Boonesborough
was one of the earliest settlements west of the Appalachian Mountains. Several battles in both the Revolutionary and Civil wars were fought
throughout Kentucky. Kentucky became the 15 th state in 1792; prior to that it was Kentuka County, Virginia. Lexington itself is the largest
US city not on a navigable water way. Also Lexington is home to the largest basketball specific arena in the world.
Our convention will take place in this lovely city during the driest month of the year. October tends to be a dry warm month for
Kentucky known as an “Indian summer”, but it will have already had its first frost so pack to stay warm an bring an umbrella just in case
the weather throws out a surprise. Look forward to seeing you in Kentucky!
A Blast from the Past! – Rachel Hammond – NJHA Central Director
Shaker Village is located on Pleasant Hill with 3,000 acres of back yard and 25,000 square feet of masterpiece to see and explore.
Fifty years of preserved history and hospitality is located on these grounds, offering a great experience and connecting you to history. It is
the home of a religious community, known as the Shakers. Shakers did not believe in sex or any kind of contact between men and women,
this made the Shaker community harder to repopulate. The Shaker community was also big in the production of packaged seed, furniture,
silk, and flat brooms. The Village gives a refreshing closeness to nature and a chance to interact with 4-legged friends. You will be able to
learn about the Shaker’s life, visit the gift shops, and even try their pretty darn good Lemon Pie!
Get in the Groove and Move to the Beat – Sayali Desai – NJHA Eastern Director
Do you have an infectious passion for dancing? Do you like to groove and move to the various tunes? If you do, get on your dancing shoes
and attend the dance after the banquet on a Monday night. It is a great way to mingle and get interact with fellow NJHAers and to have a
blast! It is a total thrill with the level kept increasing.
Hort Connections
Think you have it in you in order to order to compete in a horticultural game show? If you think you do then come on down and attend Hort
Connections. It is very much similar to Jeopardy. This game features any sort of horticulture related questions that in which contestants are
presented with general knowledge clues in the form of answers, and must phrase their responses in question form. So if you like to be on
your toes or if you would like to participate in a friendly competition this is the activity for you.
Trade Pins
Looking for various state memorabilia as keepsakes? Another great way of interaction and to meet new friends from various states is to
trade small items that are either native to the state or are fairly unique. Most states have some very innovative and intriguing items that
students may look forward to. There are rules to trading which NJHAers we do really hope you would abide by. NUMBER ONE - do not be
mean to your fellow pin traders. NUMBER TWO – have fun and be a good sport. NUMBER THREE - it is OK if your fellow pin trader does
not want to make a trade.
Horses and Horticulture, Hooray!! – Bethany Brinsfield –NJHA Western Director
Who likes children’s gardens? Evenings packed with fun? Horses? What about seeing your favorite plants displayed in exciting
ways? Well does convention have stuff for you! This October we have some interesting outdoor tours planned out. It is really something to
be excited about. This year we will be going to the University of Kentucky State Arboretum and Botanical Gardens and Gainesway Farms
and Kentucky Horse Park.
This June the National Junior Horticultural Association Officer team toured the Kentucky Arboretum and gave it raving reviews.
The park is 100 acres and contains a Home Demonstration garden. The Children's Garden is full of educational material about plants, a
Train Garden, as well as manmade streams to play in and cool off. There is a two mile walking trail that passes by modern art and native
woodlands; as well as several of photo opportunities and quaint benches to rest and soak it all in.
Gainesway Farms is one of the premiere horse farms in the world and also contains an Arboretum. The property contains a large
collection of different species of Oaks as well as a fine collection of Thoroughbred horses. The horse and oak combination is a throwback to
the days when wild deer and woods bison roamed the oak forests and savannahs that made up Kentucky a thousand years ago. The horses
are a lovely worthwhile sight. When the Officer team toured the property there were mares and foals that approached the fences and posed
for pictures.
These tours are a great way to explore horticulture in Kentucky and spend time with people equally interested in horticulture
Things to Know Before You Go – Matthew Bond –NJHA Past President
Make sure to pencil in the Sunday morning business meeting as a must go, because we will be holding a free drawing to win an
ipad! We are also seeing donations of small prizes, gift cards, and other treasures to use as giveaway items.
Make sure you have at least one person from your state ready and willing to carry in your state flag for the Friday night and
Monday night banquets. You don’t need to worry about bringing your state flag as all the flags will be provided by NJHA.
The officer team will again be selling the official convention t-shirt at the registration table and throughout the convention, make
sure you get one so you can sport a cool tee shirt while showing your NJHA pride.
The alumni auction will be returning this year on Saturday evening starting at 10 P.M. We hope that you would consider donating
an item to be auctioned off. New, homemade and region or state specific items are especially appreciated. As delegates travel to Kentucky
using different modes of transportation, please be mindful to ensure that the donation you bring can be easily transported home.
Don’t forget to apply for the Alumni Scholarship, which will provide paid registration for two returning NJHA youth. The

CONVENTION HOTEL
The 2014 convention hotel is the Clarion Lexington at 1950 Newtown Pike, Lexington, Kentucky 40512.
The hotel is an excellent convention facility located right off Interstate 75 at Exit 115. The hotel has a large fun
dome, game room, exercise room, sauna, whirlpool, indoor basketball court, Southern kitchen restaurant, grill and
pizzeria, free parking, airport shuttle, and complimentary Wi-Fi. There is a complimentary hot buffet breakfast at
the hotel. There is also a Denny’s restaurant adjacent to the hotel. Rooms have iron/ironing board, hair dryer and
coffee makers.
Room rate for our convention is $88 plus tax of 13.42%. Total $100 up to 4 in a room. RESERVATIONS MAY
BE MADE BY CALLING 888 390-4918. YOU MUST IDENTIFY YOURSELF AS BEING WITH THE
NATIONAL JUNIOR HORTICULTURE ASSOCIATION TO RECEIVE THE CONVENTION RATE.
RESERVATIONS MUST BE MADE ON OR BEFORE FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 26TH. All reservations require a
guarantee by deposit or credit card. Check in time at hotel is 4:00 P M. They will accommodate you earlier, if
possible. Rates are good two days pre and two days post based on room availability.
CONVENTION REGISTRATION
Registration is $250 for single, $240 ea for 2 members of same family, $230 for 3 or more members same family.
For families bringing young children under 12, you do have a choice of youth dinner (chicken tenders, or
hamburger or hot dog and french fries plus a dessert for $10.00. You must notify Carole Carney in advance and
payment can be made at convention. NOTE: ANY YOUTH UNDER 15 YEARS OLD MUST BE
ACCOMPANIED BY A PARENT OR RESONSIBLE ADULT CHAPERONE.
REGISTATIONS SHOULD BE POSTMARKED BY FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2014 and payment should be
included with registration either by check or Pa Pal. Late registrations after September 26th are $275, $265, $255
respectively, unless Carole has been notified they will be coming on Monday, October 6, 2014. No refunds after
October 6, 2014. Registrations include 4 dinners, 2 lunches (Sunday and Monday), and complimentary hot
breakfast buffet each morning and all tour admission fees. We encourage attendance and participation in entire
convention activities. IF PARTICIPATING ONLY IN THE SATURDAY CONTESTS, THE FEE IS $50 EACH
PERSON PER CONTEST.

Registrations and payment can be made on line via Pay Pal. Visit our web site at www.njha.org. We also
welcome your check mailed with registration form. Contest forms should be filled out on line and
submitted electronically.
CONTEST REGISTRATION
If you are a student coming to convention to participate in contests, you need to pre register for the contest on line
at www.njha.org. This can be done electronically. Please register by September 15, 2014. These forms will
automatically go to the project chair in charge of that contest.

Form C – Speaking in Horticulture
Form D – Horticultural Connections
1. If you are entering as a team (i.e. demonstration or Hort ID), only one person should submit the
information (names, addresses and birthdates). Only one 4-H team per state is allowed.
2. Make sure you type all the information that is requested.
3. Give the name of your coach or advisor.
4. Entries are due by September 15.
5. All demonstration and speech contests are conducted on Saturday morning. The specific time the delegate
is scheduled for will be posted by the officers in the hotel.
6. The horticulture judging and identification contest is held on Saturday afternoon. A horticulture
identification study session will be held on Friday night after the banquet.
7. If you need more information about the contests (rules, divisions, etc.), please go to the web site
(www.njha.org) and/or contact the contest chairperson.
8. Open flames are prohibited for any part of your demonstration.
2014 PROJECT CHANGES PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
EXCITING NEWS FOR NJHA CONTESTANTS AND PROJECT PARTICIPANTS! THIS IS THE
FIRST YEAR OF AN UPDATE AND REVISION OF ALL OF THE CONTESTS. PLEASE CHECK THE WEB
SITE FOR NEW CONTESTS AND UPDATED REQUIREMENTS FOR THE “OLD” ONES. THERE ARE A
NUMBER OF NEW AND EXCITING OPTIONS ESPECIALLY IN SPEECH/DEMO AND CREATIVE
WRITING.
FOR 2014, IF YOU HAVE ALREADY BEGUN A PROJECT FOR THIS YEAR, DON’T WORRY – WE WILL ACCEPT
ENTRIES UNDER THE OLD RULES – BUT PLEASE DO CONTACT THE PROJECT CHAIR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
TO LET THEM KNOW YOU WOULD LIKE TO USE THE OLD ENTRY RULES AND FORMS. GOOD LUCK!
SPECIAL NOTICE FOR STATE FLAGS*** YOU DO NOT NEED TO BRING YOUR STATE FLAG FOR THE
FLAG CEREMONY. Smaller flags will be furnished by NJHA. This will help everyone who brings flags and bases
and checking them in at the airports. Flag practice is at 5:30 PM on Friday and Monday. The person carrying the
flag should come to the practices dressed for the banquet.
STATE EXHIBITS – States are encouraged to bring a display that showcases their state. Give-away items are
strongly encouraged. Exhibits may be set up in the hospitality area after 2:00 PM on Friday and must be properly
maintained during the convention. Exhibits are judged for their educational value. Exhibits should be removed
after the awards banquet on Monday night. Tables will be covered and skirted.
DRESS CODE – As a delegate representing your state at a national convention, you are encouraged to dress
appropriately during the convention. While jeans are not frowned upon, they should not be ripped, torn or
shabby. Youth participating in speeches and demonstrations generally dress up for their presentation. Likewise,
everyone is encouraged to wear business attire (shirt/tie, skirt/pantsuit) for the banquets. The weather can be
variable. Plan on bringing a sweater and/or light jacket along with comfortable walking shoes. Average day temps
temps are 70 and nights at 65.
CONDUCT – State Leaders/chaperones/advisors/coaches/parents are responsible for insuring that the behavior of
the delegates does not have a negative reputation at the hotel. There will be other guests in the hotel the same time
as we are, so it is imperative to maintain proper conduct
1. Delegates will not run, yell, or hang out in the halls
2. Delegates must be out of the halls and quiet 30 minutes after the last activity is completed.
3. Violators will be sent home at family expense.

One of the workshops that we will be presenting is Seed Art. If there is someone out there who lives close to a seed
company, would you please make an effort to approach them and see if they might have old seeds that they would
be willing to donate to NJHA? If you do make an approach and receive seeds, please send me their address and

Workshop Information:
There are two workshops that will be 2 hour long.
Flower Arranging – Design an arrangement to be used at Monday night’s banquet.
Seed Art – Make a picture with seeds and learn to identify different seeds. One thing that you will need to bring
with you is a pair of tweezers. Everything else furnished. This workshop is designed mainly for small youth and
must be accompanied by an adult.
