Winter 2015 Vol. 27, No. 2 Published by the Parent Resource Center for Parents of Students Receiving Special Education Services The end of the school year can be a nervous time for students, especially those that will be making the jump into elementary school, middle school, high school, or college next fall. The parents of these transitioning students are left with a variety of questions ranging from concerns about academic expectations to following schedules to social skills to safety. The Parent Resource Center recognizes these concerns and offers workshops that afford parents the opportunity to learn more about the next level of schooling and how it might impact their child with a disability. Mark your calendar and plan to join us at one of our upcoming sessions at the Kelly Leadership Center! For siblings ages 8–11 years! When a child has a disability, the entire family is affected. Sibshops provide support and guidance to siblings of children with disabilities. Siblings are encouraged to share the challenges and celebrate the joys with brothers and sisters in similar situations. Sibshops are lively, action packed, 4 hour workshops that reflect the belief that brothers and sisters have much to offer one another, if they are given a chance. The Sibshop model mixes information and discussion activities with new games (designed to be unique, off-beat, and appealing to a wide ability range). Sibshops are run by a team of adults who have professional and, in some cases, a personal understanding of the impact a child’s disability can have on brothers and sisters of that child.
