ISSUE JUNE 2015 by Nomad Adventure Sdn Bhd Dear Competitors, Volunteers and Friends, We are so looking forward to having each and everyone of you within the next TWO WEEKS! The Eco-X team has been working hard on the race course, constructing our obstacles and garnering more sponsors to make the Eco-X a spectacular race that celebrates the spirit of the outdoor adventure community. With our different race distances, we have successfully managed to lure over 400 people into the gruesome pleasures of adventure racing! The 21km will be tough and torturous for kiasu participants who want to challenge themselves. The 5km is a non-competitive event for kiasi newbies who want to get a taste of adventure. The 11km is perfect for those who can’t decide if they are kiasu or kiasi ! And then we have the kids category for the under 12’s who are just hyper and adventurous. This year, thanks to many generous individual sponsors, we have been able to invite groups of children from the local community to have the opportunity to participate in the race and (hopefully!) develop a love for outdoor adventure. Please do contact us if you would like to sponsor a child. Due to popular demand and highly understanding suppliers, we are still open for registration until 10th June. (See our exciting announcement below) Our Eco X races have really developed a reputation as being “created by adventurers for adventurers”, where the somewhat tongue-in-cheek atmosphere belies a grim test of endurance and determination. Compulsory Equipment Update There is no change to this list from newsletter 1 Compulsory Equipment (All Categories) • Proper running shoes, cross trainer/ trail shoes (toe revealing shoes are not permitted) • Water Container or Hydration pack with water inside. Remember the race is cupless so unless you want to drink from your hands, please bring a water container. Compulsory Equipment (21km and 11km) • Headlamp or torch light to be carried with you from the start line Note: Not having the compulsory equipment on you at all times during the race can lead to disqualification or being pulled from the race course. Suggested Equipment (All Categories) • Waterproofing for valuables and race instructions. We will give you a race map and directions. Please bring a means of waterproofing the A4 document as you will get totally wet. a t AHEAD TuRe 1. However it has only room for 200 cars, so do the math, folks! You will need to carpool. Parking is on a first come first served basis. Any cars arriving after 8:15 will not be allowed into the car park or anywhere near the race start line. • Storage of Belongings. We will not be providing any bag or valuables drop off, only car key drop off. Leaving any personal items at Earth Camp is at your own risk. You are highly advised to store your belongings in your vehicle. • Quick dry clothing, hat & sun protection 4. Race Venue (Earth Camp) updates • The Race start and finish area will be at Earth Camp. Co-Ordinates for Earth Camp are: 4.430215, 101.180627 Or search for Nomad Adventure Earth Camp on Google Maps) • Drivers coming in from the main road please drive slowly and carefully (maximum 20km/h) when you enter into the kampong (village). Watch out for chickens and children. 06:30am: Race Registration starts. Collection of race packs and numbers begins. 07:55am: Race Registration closes. 08:00am Race briefing by category 08:30am: 21KM flag off 09:00am: 11KM flag off 09:15am: 5 KM flag off 09:30am: 1 KM (Kids) flag off 11:45am Race course closes down. Anyone found littering the racecourse or Earth Camp will be disqualified – Please take note we take this rule very seriously. 2. Cheating in anyway will also result in disqualification. The following is considered as cheating… • Not following the specified course and cutting the course • Using mechanical aids on the course • “skirting” mean running around natural obstacles e.g. avoiding river crossings or tunnels by finding alternate routes such as bridges 3. All racers must have specific mandatory gear with them or they will be pulled from the course and disqualified: • Proper running shoes, cross trainer/ trail shoes (toe revealing shoes are not permitted) • A hydration source which can include a water bottle, hydration bladder, fuel belt, or similar. • A headlamp for racers entering the cave (11km & 21km only) 4. If you fail to display your bib at the finish or lose it you must let the timing team know immediately when you cross the finish line. Participants that lose their bib are not guaranteed an official finishing time. 5. It is your responsibility to follow the course markings. PLEASE NOTE: The Marshalls are primarily there for safety purposes they are not responsible for you complying with this rule. Do not rely on marshals to point out directions to you. 6. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are checked in at the checkpoints. The method of checking in will be described to you at the race briefing. This process is to ensure your safety (eg: so we know if you are missing) and to prevent cheating. Failure to check in will result in disqualification. 7. Clothing must be socially acceptable by local norms e.g. no bare torso’s Gentlemen, leave Abs & 6 packs to the Ladies imagination. Thanks 8. Race course marshals have absolute discretion to stop any participant from racing if they feel that they are unsafe to themselves or to others. This includes the right to refuse to allow any participant t AHEAD TuRe We would like to share our RACE RULES to all participants. Written copies of the race rules will NOT be given out at race registration. a ADVENTURE N Ru general race rules xDVEn DONT LOOK from attempting any of the obstacles. In such a case the participants can still finish the race, but will have to take a time penalty for the “missed” obstacle. 9. The race course closes at 11:45am. Any racers still on the course at this time will be told by the sweeper that there are no marshalls on the course and if they stay on the course to complete the do so at their own risk. There may also not be anyone at the finish line to record the finish time. 10. Racers may not preview the course or seek information about the course from EcoX staff before the event. Much of the race course is on private property so if you go exploring we cannot guarantee your safety. 11. The Race Director reserves the right to introduce additional time cut-offs and modify current ones as needed and to alter the course at any time as he feels it necessary. 12. Any protests by Racers around these rules, the preliminary results or marshal/ racer behavior must be done within 30 minutes of crossing the finish line and must be communicated directly to the Race Director or someone appointed by the Race Director. e c2o01H5E KCAB xDVEn a t DONT LOOK ADVENTURE AHEAD TuRe Ru N Obstacles rules & GUIDELINES As well as the multiple natural obstacles out on the course there are 6 man-made ones. These are all based at Earth Camp (start and finish point of the race). All obstacles must all be attempted. The definition of “attempted” means touched. The penalty for not completing an obstacle successfully is a 3minute time penalty, per obstacle. Every obstacle will have written instructions on how to successfully complete the obstacle displayed at the start of each obstacle. You’re advised to use your time before the race to go and review these before your race starts. If you attempt, climb on, over, under or through the obstacle at any time before the race, you do so at your own risk and there will be no Marshall present to tell you whether or not you have done the obstacle successfully until the race starts. Each obstacle will have race marshals monitoring racers’ progress and execution of the task(s). They are not there to help you. They are there to judge if you have done it correctly and provide assistance in the event of an accident. On successful completion of Obstacle # 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6, you will be given a token that you must present at the finish line to the timing crew. For Obstacle #2, you will get one token if you complete it half way, and two tokens if you fully complete it. There are a total of 7 tokens to be collected. Every participant will start with a 21 minute penalty. Every token presented will cancel out 3 minutes of that penalty. This means if you come back with 7 tokens, which is the maximum number, you will not get any time penalty. If have zero tokens at the finish line, you will be given an 21 minute penalty. If you come back with 5 tokens, you will get a 6 minute penalty, and so on. If you lose your token, appeals will not be entertained. In the event of a dead heat, the individual/team that has completed the most obstacles successfully will be deemed the winner. If that still results in a dead heat for a place on the podium then the winner will be decided by a duel on the Monkey Bars where the fastest person across or the one that completes the most bars is determined the winner. We appreciate this might be a bit harsh for the loser but it will be fun for the rest of us All items that you are carrying must be taken through all obstacles. You cannot remove them, complete the obstacle and then go back for them. The race management reserves the right to refuse to allow any participant to attempt any obstacle on the grounds of safety. The race management also has the discretion to direct certain participants to make way for other racers. Physical contact with other racers is inevitable at an obstacle. It is every racer’s responsibility to insure that contact does nothing to interfere with another racer’s efforts. Race management has the discretion to penalize any deliberate or accidental hindering or blocking on an obstacle. Similarly, there is a zero-tolerance on any mocking or intimidation to a fellow Racer at an obstacle. A Racer that does this risks being reported to the Race Director and after investigation being disqualified. Adventure Racers are, we think, generally really nice people and therefore even though this is a competitive race they can help fellow racers on racecourse and, especially, at the obstacles. This is, we feel, part of the camaraderie of Adventure Running and we encourage it enthusiastically within the Adventure Racing community that we want to create here at Eco-X.
