Russian River Water Conservation Council Russian River Frost Protection Regulation EXAMPLE FROST WATER VOLUME CALCULATIONS Conversion from Gallons to Acre Feet 325,851 gallons = 1 acre foot Multiply # of sprinklers x Gallons per minute per sprinkler for total gallons per min # sprinklers x GPM/Sprinkler = Total GPM Total GPM x total minutes frost pumps were on = total gallons Total gallons divided by 325,851 gallons = total acre feet of water used EXAMPLE Average sprinkler is 2 gallons per minute flow rate Average field has 27 sprinklers per acre 2gpm x 27 sprinklers/acre = 54 gpm/acre Example Frost event ‐‐‐ Turn pumps on for 4 hours 4 hours x 60 min/hr= 240 minutes 240 minutes x 54 gal/min/acre= 12,960 gallons/acre Example 10 acre frost protected vineyard 10 acres x 12,960 gallons = 129,600 gallons 129,600 gallons / 325,851 gal/acre ft = 0.40 acre feet of water for a 10 acre vineyard and a 4 hour frost event.
