Notes from the Executive Director…
by Annwen Loverin
Spring is a time for renewal and fresh thinking, and it’s just around the corner! It’s a great
time to start a new program or attend a seminar or special event. It’s also time to renew
your Silver Harbour membership or join the Centre. Membership is still just $30 and is
good through March 2016. Joining as a member entitles you to register in our many
programs and classes and also gets you a price discount on meals, bus trips, dinner dances,
and other special events. It’s excellent value for money and a great way to support seniors’
programs in our community.
If you’re interested in trying something new, our newsletter is always full of information
about programs, seminars, workshops, bus trips, and special events, giving you a wide range
of choice as to what you’d like to participate in. We have programs that enhance your
physical fitness, keep your brain active, spark your creativity, and help you enjoy life. And
if you have a suggestion for a new activity, please let us know.
Happy Springtime, everyone!

lawyers, volunteering to assist seniors with
legal concerns and questions. This clinic is

Would you like to leave a legacy beyond
your lifetime? Do you wish you could
keep supporting the charities, like Silver
Harbour, that are important to you?
You can, by including planned giving in
your Will. You can designate a specific
gift of cash, stocks or other assets; you
can also leave a planned gift by naming
a charity as a beneficiary of a life

Your tax advisor or lawyer are the best
ones to explain the benefits of planned
giving for your individual situation.
And if you are interested in learning
more about providing a planned gift to
Silver Harbour Seniors’ Activity Centre,
please contact our Executive Director,

Important Information About Bus Trips
This information will be very helpful to anyone interested in joining our bus trips…
1. Please note that return times are approximate, as there is no way to predict traffic or other
possible timing issues which may arise. We recommend that you do not schedule any
appointments directly following the trip.
2. Please read the bus trip description carefully – we will make every effort to fully describe
the trip, including how much walking there is and whether you may bring your walker or
wheelchair.
3. Please arrive 15 minutes before the start time of the trip. This allows us to leave at the
time listed.
4. Some drivers will appreciate a tip and others prefer not to be tipped. If you would like to
tip the driver, please bring a small amount of money for this purpose. If a driver accepts
tips, it is still your choice whether you want to give one or not.
5. Please remember that the driver will be making all safety-related decisions during the
trip. This will include whether windows may be opened, the level of indoor heating, where
the bus may stop, and other important decisions.
6. We do not offer refunds for bus trips unless the bus trip is full and we can resell your
ticket to a person on the waitlist. Trips cancelled by Silver Harbour will be refunded in
full.
7. If you are driving to Silver Harbour for your bus trip, please park on the street or in the
parking lot to the east of our building. Anyone may park in these areas for any length of
time.
8. Please limit your use of scented products like hairsprays and perfumes when going on bus
trips. Some people can be very sensitive to these scents, especially in enclosed spaces.
We very much appreciate your consideration.
9. Enjoy your trip!

Computer Q & A Sessions
These sessions are offered free on a drop in basis to Silver Harbour members. Nonmembers can attend for a $5 per session fee. Peter will answer computer related questions
that are not covered in our courses. This session is intended for problem-solving or just
clarifying certain computer related issues. There is no curriculum and every kind of
relevant question is welcome. This is a wonderful opportunity for our members and we
do hope they will take advantage of this generous offer of valuable information to help them
with their computer use.

Arts and Crafts Corner…
by Linda Ramsden
Silver Harbour will, once again, be participating in the annual North Shore Art Crawl. The
event is earlier this year, taking place on Saturday, March 7th from 10 am to 6 pm. We will
have displays and demonstrations from a variety of our Arts classes, including oil and
watercolour painting, pottery, tapestry and on-loom weaving, quilting, woodturning, rug
hooking and calligraphy.
We are fortunate to have an Arts program that offers such a wide selection of classes, and
the Art Crawl provides a unique opportunity to showcase many of them to community
members, as well as some of our own members. Please drop in to see us on the 7th and
bring along family or friends. It is a fun, relaxed day with projects underway and an inspiring
collection of our members’ art works to view.
The Art Crawl features artists in many different settings throughout the North Shore on
March 7th and 8th. Brochures with maps are available at the front desk. Silver Harbour
Centre has a bus that will visit a selection of artists on Saturday, March 7th for a small fee.
Last year’s bus group had a wonderful time, and enjoyed the added benefit of avoiding
parking concerns at the venues that they visited. Please see page 14 of this newsletter for
more details. Please book immediately for the bus if you wish to join the group.
During the weekend of March 13th and 14th the Fibres West symposium takes place at the
Cloverdale Exhibition Grounds from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. The weekend event features
vendors, classes, lectures and more. Silver Harbour will be represented there, in a booth,
by Virginia B., our incredibly talented Tapestry Weaving instructor. Virginia will be
demonstrating Tapestry Weaving and will have Centre information on hand for visitors to
the booth. Last year over 1,300 fibre artists and others attended the event so this should
prove to be a fantastic opportunity to bring some more awareness of Silver Harbour and
our programs to the public. Many thanks to Virginia for taking on this commitment, not
only to share her knowledge with other fibre artists, but to benefit our Centre as a whole.
March 17th is the date that we all become Irish for a day. We will
have a selection of special gifts for sale in the main hall, for a
week or so prior to St. Patrick’s Day. Please do pop by to pick
up a little something to celebrate.

March Workshop
Ukrainian Easter Eggs
Terry offered this fun workshop, in February, to a full class of keen
participants. No experience is needed and each participant will
decorate and dye their own egg using traditional tools and techniques
while learning about this fascinating folk art. This is a wonderful
chance to try something new and perhaps start a new Easter tradition.
If enough additional participants express interest, we will schedule a
March workshop.
